  1. Coming soon. Not sure exactly when, starting with the Craigentinny Marbles, but possibly potentially hopefully some more to come.

More details as and when the first wee segment will be on the People's History Show (Monday nights).

    Ooh, interesting...

Is this the "secret" project you've been mentioning on your Blipfoto? If so, then brilliant!

I'll make the effort to watch.

  3. Yep. I was filming my first bit today and it really was a "we'll see how it goes" kind of thing. But it seems to have gone very well. I've some voice-overing to do, but looks like it could become more than a one-off. Fingers firmly crossed.

The producer I spoke to was very interested in the cycling angle, so there should always be a bit of a "this is how to get there" thing.

    Cool, that's excellent.

I'm sure if you ever run short you'll get plenty of suggestions for future topics from people here!

Excellent! The more sympathetic and subliminal cycling cues that the viewers of STV Edinburgh can be subjected to the better (well, the Facebook commenters especially).

    Excellent.

    I hope you're decked out in a manner as to be instantly recognisable, like that other cycling historian Adam Hart-Davis;

If you do film more then it would be cool if you did each one on a different bike: recumbent, tandem, Dutch bike....Plenty of interesting machines that may be available to borrow!

I'm genuinely excited that someone I "know" through an internet forum is doing this!

  9. I had actually had a thought along those lines Stickman. Different bike each time. Need to get the Kaff back roadworthy for the next one, after Cross biking it today. Didn't want to suggest it to them until I'd basically screentested.

As for attire.... Jeans (given I was going inside to speak to real people); Rapha jacket for the cognoscenti; Scandi pattern beanie (turns out they'd completed a risk assessment that I'd be wearing a helmet, so that might have to come out if there are future filmings). I once interviewed Adam Hart-Davis (by email) for citycycling. He came across really really grumpy....

Just read your blip about this...another bit of Edinburgh I never knew about! Thanks for that - really interesting. Weekend exploring plans now being made.....

I'll definitely be watching the People's History now - and not just for your good self ;-)

  14. Was it solely about the marbles, or did you manage to include a wee bit on their neighbour, The Great Lafayette?

    Posted 10 years ago #
  15. Sadly not, it's only going to be a four minute or so segment. Planted the seed though. Although there was quite a bit of Lafayette coverage during the anniversary of the Festival Theatre.

I'd recorded a couple of these after finding out about it through this thread, and watched them this evening.

Very interesting, and with an endearing "amateur enthusiast" vibe about it.

Found out a lot of things about the history of Maryhill in Glasgow (near where I grew up) and Fountainbridge. Also a bit about Edinburgh's oldest pubs, and the fair at Portobello.

Looking forward to WC on Monday!

  17. So. 'Should' be on tonight. A segment ppb the Fountainbridge Show which starts at 7.30, then also on the People's History show at 8.30. And on catch up on the STV Player.

I recorded a couple of voiceover bits last Wednesday, and they confirmed they'd like me to do more, so it's entirely down to my availability.

The cycling aspect is even going to go as far as route suggestions :)

Technology has been set to record :-)

The show has got quite an old-fashioned feeling, hasn't it? There are no fancy graphics, dramatic reconstructions or moody shots of the presenter thinking deeply (cf Philomena Cunk). It's just someone talking to camera about something interesting in a fairly concise manner, with relevant photos/film. The (presumably) low budget is working to their advantage.

    I like it.

  22. If you're in the meat bit interested, it was the first segment last night. FB and Twitter have been kind about it :)

I've just watched this: a star is born!

I thought you were really natural and came across really well; you'd never have known it was your first time! Interesting wee piece and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Ever thought of doing an organised cycling history tour of Edinburgh? I'd be interested in coming along.

Excellent, enjoyed it and found it educational (!)
Hope you enjoy the chance to create much more :-)
Oh an don't bow down to the risk assessment bullies! Wear whatever jaunty headwear you feel is appropriate for the bike/area/moment. Might be a helmet, might be a beanie! ;-) YOUR choice, unless they insist on all presenters in cars wearing flameproof overalls "just in case"!

  25. If I ever finish my Sunbeam it'll be my tweed baker boy hat...

@Stickman, I actually sort of lead a ride that took in the Marbles a couple of years ago! (as well as a car park summit, and Duddingston House - it was a nice day out).

    Great job WC.
Hopefully will become a regular feature.

Oh yeah, you *need* to get the lovely Sunbeam on screen to make everyone jealous. Now that would make a very classy "trademark" for a cycling historian B-)

    Posted 10 years ago #
  28. Will be riding again.... (I'm presuming on screen sometime early next week).

  29. In the words of Father Jack, "What's that Eejit doing on the television?"

Fountainbridge Show tonight, starts at 7.05pm, and my piece on Porty Pottery is going to be on. The Kaff features quite heavily, and there's even some talking while cycling....
