I happen to have a disc-compatible Shimano dynamo hub in my box of spare things, if anyone looking to get a dynamo disc wheel built can't be bothered finding enough other stuff they need on Rosebikes to make up a worthwhile order.
It was awaiting being built into a far-future-proofed spare wheel, but as each bike's existing front wheel already acts as a spare for the other it was more likely to have eventually ended up being a winter-spike-easy-swap sparewheel to reduce the number of tyre remove/replace operations required.Posted 7 years ago # -

Currently talking myself into spending the money on a dynamo hub/lights setup.
I'd like to at least keep open the option to charge electronics (phone, camera etc.). I'm assuming this is possible with any hub, but wanted to check if certain setups are better at coping with it than others?
Consensus seems to be that the SP hubs are a bit nicer than the Shimano ones, but I've no idea whether the improvement is worth the extra money. Any help?
General advice on picking lights, hubs, external battery packs etc. all welcome.

@frenchy, if I remember right from when I flirted with a dynamo hub the shimano was cheaper as came built onto the wheel so less graft for the mechanic.

There's a trend towards running hubs intended for small wheels (brompton size) in full size wheels as led lights can manage with the lower power output. However I think if you want to be charging them a full size one is advised

I have this on the front and like it very much. Throws out masses of light everywhere I need it. Lets me ride at my maximum speed (15-20mph) on unlit roads in pitch dark.

The Shimano DH-3N series hubs are very good for the money, they're not quite as low drag/high efficiency as the SON ones, but the difference should be negligible for everyday riding. I have the 3N71 and it's still going very strong after about 4-5 years use on all sorts of ridings and into it's 4th or 5th new rim.

@IWRATS yeah it's amazing what all the cack that accumulates in your brake blocks can do to a rim. Plus the relentless stop/start/accelerate/stop/start/accelerate of commuting on the road. I think I'm on the 4th now, having had 2 rebuilds since the original on Open Pros.
I've given up on Open Pros now for every day use after one of them exploded/imploded on me going down the High Street due to being overly concaved by brake block wear, it split along the "indicator" line and a nice circular skelf of metal unravelled itself from the rim.

I destroyed through a few "normal" Open Pros that way - most alarming! The hardened variety seem to be *much* tougher though (whatever Jobst Brandt thinks)
And yes, the original Shimano 3N-70 which in the wheel is doing just fine, 9 years after I bought it.

The dynamo lights on my bike started playing up today, switching themselves off and on seemingly at random. Both front and back seemed to go on/off together.
Any advice on troubleshooting?

Connection at the dynamo? Has the plug come loose? A wire slipped out or corroded?
That's certainly where I'd start, as it's the simplest thing to check, diagnose and fix.
Then I'd move on to considering the wire between the plug and the front light.

I've had a similar problem after fitting the wheel on a new frame. Turned out I'd stretched the wire a bit and so it was pulling the plug off the socket on the hub just enough to work intermittently , solve by slackening the wire a little to ensure the plug goes fully onto the hub socket.

Plug seems to be in properly. Lights are integrated into the mudguard, so I wasn't able to poke around the other wires, but I didn't look very hard either.
It's in for a service in a couple of weeks anyway.
