This floated into my brain somewhere near Cramond (I blame the lingering cold) and thought since there are lots of new memebers, what better way to introduce ourselves than a game of CCE Top Trumps.

Hereza categories, scores out of ten with points for various sub categories.

    Spotability
Same place, same time (1-3 points)
    Distinctive bike (1-3 points)
Commute South of Princes st +1 North 0
Any other unusual personal attributes (freakishly tall, one leg, maninaskirt, etc) (1-3 points)

    Ruggedness
From 10, remove 1 for every month you've not commuted in the past year (+1 for months where you've been carrying a child (for SRD))

    AWESOME POWER
Add a point for every bike bit you've broken just by sheer effort, every animal you've saved and every semi miraculous emergency stop you've made in time.

    Copenhagenalismness
A measure of cycle chicness. Remove a point for wearing lycra, hi-viz, a helmet, waterproofs, warm clothing, gloves, clips, cleats. Pretty much anything not wool, tweed, floaty. Also minus if your bike has more than three gears, anything less than full mudguards and no basket with a baguette in it.
Bonus point being able to ride while drinking a takeaway coffee and tweeting about it +2.

    Commutabulosity
Use your bike as your main form of commuting (1-3pt)
Your commute involves going through a postcode higher than EH3 +1, EH17 +2 or between a postcode other than EH +3
Bonus points for dropping off passengers on way +1pp
Bike shop owner/worker that allows people to use shop track pump +3
Bonus point if you always carry a repair kit, tyre levers and a pump and will offer to help other stopped cyclists +1

    Any other categories I've missed?

    So how do yawl score?

+1 per child, yes? (hmmm...what about in utero?)

also, as recounted elsewhere, 99% of helmets I saw in Copenhagen this week were 'nutcases' - do they get any bonus points?

I'll work it out later, but I'm not posting anything until I've mocked it up onto a trump card of my very own :)

+1 Commute South of Princes st +1
+1 for months where you've been carrying a child +9
-1 for every month you've not commuted (ie since July - although I think I have a pretty good reason! and one of those months I was on holiday) -3
-1 for wearing hi-viz, a helmet, gloves, waterproofs, more than three gears, - 5
Use your bike as your main form of commuting (1-3pt) ????
    postcode higher than EH3 +1
Bonus points for dropping off passengers on way +1pp

I'm either a 7 or a 9, depending on how the third last category is applied.

PS, either start at 10 for the ones you are minusing from, or 0 for the ones you are adding too that should give you a score somewhere in the region of 0 to 10 :)

I know if's stupid, but it's mah baw.

PS, Baby in utero def +1!

The last category I made up and is calculated thus:

    Experiance
number of years of bike use/ownership (does not count years out) + number of UPD's (Unplanned Dis-Mount, a term from the unicycling community).

note: if your UPD's exceed your years cycled then they become a negative score ;)

I'm not sure about the EXPERIENCE one.

After all, falling off *adds* to your experience - you've tried and learned from something that others haven't!

Mine works out at -10 (subtract crashes) or 40 (adding crashes)

    Posted 14 years ago #
  16. ruggtomcat
    Member

Well I think if you crash that much you obviously are not learning from your experience ;)

I don't count off road UPDs, just on the road/path.

    T

    p.s. 15 years then?

Spotability = 4 (+1 same general time and direction, +2 distinctive bikes, +1 commute South of Princes St.)
    Ruggedness = 10
AWESOME POWER = 5 (1 back wheel trashed, 1 headset cracked, 1 suspension fork ruined, +2 emergency stops)
Copenhagenalismness = -8.5 (-1 lycra, -1 helmet, -1 gloves, -1 cleats, -1 basket, -1 prescription sports glasses, -1 full guards, -1 messenger bag, -0.5 multiple gears (have SS and geared bikes))
Commutabulosity = 6 (+3 main form of commute, +1 never learned to drive, +1 postcode, +1 repair kit, levers, pump and will help stranded bikeists)
    Luminosity = 1

    You could add these:

Score two points if you've ever ridden with just one glove
But subtract two if it was because you only found one.

Score a point for each time you have stopped to help another cyclist. But subtract two points if you weren't any help.

Score a point if you have ridden a bike with a child seat on it. But subtract two points if you've never had a child in it.

Score a point if you have stopped to advocate cycling to hostile teenagers. Add another point if you were riding a recumbent at the time (for LaidBack).

Score five points if you ride a fixed gear bike. But subtract a point for each time you have done any of the following:
chopped off a finger-tip while oiling your chain, freeze welded your hands to your untaped chromed bars in winter or had to get off on a hill because your bars were too narrow to provide sufficient leverage.

But now I'll work out my own.

    Spotability

3 - Same time every day. The quack even commented on it, I go past his house. I get spotted as the bike guy even when I don’t have a bike with me.
3 - Brompton, Pashley or Longstaff
    0 - Not in Edinburgh
    1 - Evil Spock/Klingon beard

    ----------------------------------
    Ruggedness
    ----------------------------------

10 - I never give in to weather. If I can’t cycle there then a car wouldn’t make it either.

    ----------------------------------
    Awesome Power
    ----------------------------------

0 - Can’t think of any, usually corrosion or wear and tear breaks bits. Either I’m really nice to parts or I have tough kit.

    ----------------------------------
    Copenhagenalismness
    ----------------------------------

8 - West of Scotland so I do wear waterproofs when it rains, I have a 2 speed Brompton but the Pashley has a Sturmey-Archer wide range five speed X-RD5(W)

    ----------------------------------
    Commutabulosity
    ----------------------------------

3 - I rarely use a car unless I’m with the memsahib. I do take number 4 son across town in a trailer on Sundays.
1 - Even on Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres I have at least one pump, tubes, VAR tyre lever and puncture kit, small Bahco shifter, Evan’s multitool and Swiss Army Knife.

    ----------------------------------
    Luminescence
    ----------------------------------

3.6 - Generator hub, battery tail light and Reelight.

    Total 32.6

Experience 27 if you count years communting in school and as a student as well as actual work. I started in ‘80 but lost two years when I was car sharing and one when my bike was stored at my auntie’s house when we didn’t have a house.

¦ Spotability 0.01 ¦ Higher on MMW and Argyle Pl of course. Google Streetview has an LB bike in the shop window. If you can name the exact model you can have a free Velo Vision Mag worth £6. Might even be the new one which will review the Simpel NuVinci.
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    ¦ Ruggedness 10 ¦
    ------------------------------------------------------------
¦ Awesome power 1 ¦ Seat usually goes flat or boom moves sideways. This is not a real break though!
    ------------------------------------------------------------

This is fun! I've broken two cranks, saved a hedgehog and had at least one brake disc warpingly spectacular emergency stop, so I'm probably ever so slightly awesome. Much fail to be had with the Copenhagen stylings though; my Brompton has SPDs for crying out loud. My auxilliary experience score is probably somewhere around 35, given plenty of comings-off in winter and on roundabouts.
