If you have an iOS device, Apple's Maps is almost as good...

Also Google Earth (inc. on iOS) (or just Google Maps from your Chrome browser on a PC).

Some pix from a recent tour.

Access at St. Mark’s and Lochend Park ends easy to create.

    Some shocking/depressing failures of Planning/imagination -

Oh and this is *going to be* pedestrian access -

Of course, this developer has got out of the obligation to span the gap. The next development along has somehow picked up the responsibility.

BUT - of course - it (apparently) won't be open for public use.

The news follows the closure of the Meadowbank Velodrome earlier this month, and will mean the centre being decommissioned before on-site inspections take place this winter and works begin in 2018.

So, no velodrome but a new stadium in 3 years.

    Will need decent ActiveTravel accesss...

The council are surely all over this? An unused railway line passing directly behind a major brand new venue is almost too good to be true.

They'd be mad not to convert it and link the new stadium into Leith Walk and the entire NEPN.

"The council are surely all over this? "

You'd have thunk so. However at the consultation event last year, council officials seemed unaware of the following:

    - Powderhall line closure imminent
    - Trackbed reserved for active travel/tram line
    - Part of the site reserved for a rail station/tram halt

I know development. planning and transport are different departments but really...

I did 'feedback' on the proposals to highlight these issues but hey ho.

Councillor Ian Campbell, vice convener of culture and communities said: “This is the end of an era for Meadowbank and the start of a major redevelopment to support physical activity, health and wellbeing in Edinburgh for generations to come.

So, does IC know about the Powderhall route opportunities?

Even if he does, a reminder would be good.

If anyone would like to write to Cllr Campbell on this matter, please do!

I will certainly be taking this opportunity to remind my elected representatives and community councillors what a great idea it would be to have a traffic-free active travel link to the new sporting facility.

I'm pleased to see Harald on the case with this one, seems our "mole" in LCC has done a sterling job! :-)

If Powderhall path is to happen, pressure needs to be kept up on elected representatives.

With Meadowbank as we know it set to close its doors for the very last time on 3 December, ahead of redevelopment, it will fall to five-year-old Rhys Freeman, from Craigentinny, to set off the last annual fireworks at the stadium.

"By Councillor Rae for answer by the Convener of the Transport and Environment Committee at a meeting of the Council on 23 November 2017:
What discussions have taken place between the council and Network Rail, with a view to construction of a walking/cycling path on the former Powderhall rail line?"

Very pleased to see that question from Cllr Rae. Leith Central Community Council also have the "Powderhall Green Corridor" as a transport/planning priority.

    Slowly but surely...

Always hard to pinpoint how these things develop, progress, takeoff, but I think the work of some people here will have helped.

"the work of some people here will have helped."

It definitely has, eg. the work of the CCE/Powderhall Path Working Group "mole" in Leith Central Community Council.

Still very early days, but if CEC can somehow get a plan in place, hopefully it will happen eventually.

Don’t underestimate the role Sustrans can play.

Hope moles are close to white flowers.

I think the Sustrans (unofficial) position is that they can't do anything until the Council does something about it.

Hm, that is interesting. This is real, if incremental progress from the position outlined earlier this year by officials when Tim Smith contacted Leslie Hinds on the matter. Important that Meadowbank is mentioned by officials as a site on the potential path - a very encouraging sign.

Looks hopeful. I think the Leith Central Community Council listing it as a priority has really helped: important conduit of communication to city councillors.

If you live near the line it's really worth writing to your councillors(s) asking if they support the Powderhall Green Corridor proposal.

The building will now be decommissioned to make way for a new “state-of-the-art” sports centre, expected to be up and running by 2020.

    ...

June Peebles, chief executive of Edinburgh Leisure, said: “The new venue will undoubtedly pick up where the old Meadowbank left off; it will provide countless opportunities for generations to come to participate in physical activity and sport. New sporting memories will be created.”

That article has a aeriel photo of Meadowbank which highlights

    A) the scale of the Meadowbank site

    B) the Powderhall railway line running along the long edge of the site.

Neither if which I fully understood until that picture

Yes the Photo on BBC website just had the stadium with running track but the one in the EEN shows the cycle track at the north east end and the hugeness of the site as you say.

I'd heard of the velodrome but could never work out where it was until the photo.

Shame I left it too late to find it.

Was chatting to a young lad with a Dolan track bike on a train from fife back to Edinburgh. He was I think going to cycle it down to the track. This was a couple of years back. The indoor one in Glasgow makes more sense I guess. The outdoor track I was on once at herne hill in south London probably was in private ownership. Again pure speculation but the velodrome can be ripped down quickly and houses flung up.whereas with the stadium they will find asbestos etc.
