I'm not au fait with what a "city region" exactly is.
I noted one of the statistics on their website is 24% of the population live more than 1 hour’s commute from the centre of Edinburgh, next to 2 statistics about child and fuel poverty. I assume that the commuting time is being seen as a bad thing and therefore needs to be reduced.

So, my question to the panel is, is a city region some sort of scheme to officialise the turning of the local authorities around Edinburgh into commuterville? And by "commuting time" do they mean driving time. I'm assuming they don't mean cycling time.

Or maybe I've got it all wrong, and they want people commuting to Bathgate, Hawick, Glenrothes, Haddington etc. from Edinburgh and not the other way around. But then you might re-word that statistic as "the population of Edinburgh live more than an hours commuting time from 76% of the city region".

There's some fairly vague, lofty words to describe how things might be improved with all this money (sustainable, opportunities, connectivity, infrastructure, partnership, autonomy etc.) , but I think I for one will await the detail.

Nice they got the branded website up and running at least...

The city region deals are long term financing arrangements between the UK Government, with minor Scottish Government input, and the local authorities clustered around major cities. The only other Scottish deal was for the Glasgow region.

    Details:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/once-in-a-generation-investment-in-glasgow-and-clyde-valley

This boundaries of the Edinburgh based bid for funding seem to be based on the boundaries of the South East Scotland Strategic Development Planning Partnership.

I wouldn't read too much into what the website says. It's really just flim-flam. Edinburgh and its surrounds are pretty well-off compared with others and are simply attempting to appear poor and riven by congestion in an attempt to secure funding.

The city deal should support the policies set out in the regional transport strategy and development plan (for what they are worth in these post-Craighouse days). These generally make the right noises regarding active travel.

    Recommendations

1.1 Whilst considerable progress has been made to date, in order to develop a detailed City Deal proposition significant additional resources are required. It is therefore recommended that the Economy Committee note the progress to date in developing an outline business case; and

1.2 Refer this report to the Council’s Corporate Policy and Strategy Committee for further consideration and to confirm source for the next stage of funding required.

THE City of Edinburgh Council has approved a report on the Edinburgh and the South East of Scotland City Region Deal.

The report confirms priorities for the ambitious £2bn proposals, which are currently being discussed with the UK and Scottish governments and have the potential to attract £5bn of private sector money.

EDINBURGH’S long-awaited multi-billion pound City Deal has been delayed by Brexit, council bosses admitted.

Council leader Andrew Burns said the EU referendum and the resulting shake-up of the UK Government had caused a “slight elongation” of the plans.

He said the deal to inject £2 billion of public money into the Capital would now be finalised as part of the budget in March next year – with a basic outline agreed by the Autumn Statement in November.

Interesting that out of a £23bn pot for the entire UK, they're only allocating £800m to Scotland.

Professor Sean Smith, director of sustainable construction at Edinburgh Napier, said the £1 billion forestry sector employing more than 16,000 people, and its growing role in construction, was the “green gold” of the Scottish economy.

He said: “Seventy-five per cent of new housing in Scotland is timber based and that is expected to grow to more than eighty-five per cent in the coming years.

“Timber construction across the rest of the UK is also forecast to increase significantly, and the new research facility will support the ambitions of government, local authorities, housing associations and industry to develop new housing innovations.”

News of the research hub follows Chancellor Philip Hammond’s commitment to the multi-million pound future City Deal programme which will see thousands of new homes built in the Lothians.

The Capital’s population is forecast to grow by more than 28 per cent in the next two decades.

Professor Smith said: “The new facility also strongly aligns with the City of Edinburgh and south-east Scotland’s future growth plans for low energy housing delivering low carbon solutions. This will significantly support future housing designs and reduce domestic energy bills.”

EDINBURGH’S City Deal - handing the Capital and surrounding councils more than £1 billion worth of powers and infrastructure funding from central government - is expected to be signed off within weeks.

Officials said it was not felt appropriate to make large funding announcements so close to the elections. But a senior source said the two governments also had questions they wanted answered about some of the project proposals included in the deal.

A Holyrood committee has called for the public to submit their views on City and Region Deals, as it begins its research into the economic growth deals.

The Local Government and Communities Committee is looking for a variety of opinions from organisations and members of the public on the purpose of City and Region Deals, whether they are working for communities and how they are being run.

    http://www.parliament.scot/newsandmediacentre/104284.aspx

The City and Region Deals seem to be paying little attention to sustainable transport and are likely instead to boost private car and commercial transport a.k.a roads.

Now is your chance to influence this, via the above...

THE Capital’s £1 billion-plus City Region Deal has been delayed yet again.

Council leader Adam McVey told councillors the investment package funded jointly by the UK and Scottish governments is now expected to be confirmed “in the next few weeks”.

It was originally due to be unveiled by the end of March or early April, but the local elections in May forced the launch to be postponed until the end of June.

It will also help fund the new Sheriffhall roundabout on the City Bypass.

There will be £20m for roads in West Edinburgh to help deal with the congestion issues around large new housing developments.

More roads - just what West Edinburgh needs. The M8, M9 motorways and the A8, A90, A71 and A720 dual carriageways clearly aren't enough for your average tract housing lardbutt.

"The Scottish Government commits to continuing to work collaboratively with the city region partners on identified regionally-led local transport investment priorities through the establishment of a Transport Appraisal Working group, with an agreed and mutually shared remit and proposed outcomes. Partners will have the opportunity to be involved in and influence the second Strategic Transport Projects Review.

    Don't worry - there's a commitment.

Presumably for all that development around the airport.

Don't worry, I'm sure the council will grasp the opportunity presented by a new development and brand new roads to ensure that world class cycling and active travel facilities are designed into the area from the get-go, in line with its street design guidance... [I'm can't decide if I should be sarcastic or hopeful here. Send help.]
