Trying to talk myself out of a cdf at the moment. Not really succeeding tbh but due diligence and all that.
Anything in similar vein for similar money? Planet X cross is much dearer than the 10 and I'm not too fussed for carbon.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

CDF10/20/30 are all in the EBC sale at the moment; new models out very soon. I'm waiting for that as I can get a 25% discount, and I like the green colour of the new CdF20.
I'd also considered Planet X Kaffenback & London Road, and also Specialized Diverge.
I think the remaining sale ones would be too small but I can go through cycle scheme and get a similar discount.
Considered a kaff but it's a bit utility. More of a beige flat bed truck, It should really come pre scratched up
I'm afraid I can't help you, good buddy.
On my CdF I have:
- Got a KOM that even Dave of this parish couldn't beat.
- Done a 202 mile ride and been at 63% of Darkerside's cheerfullness by the end of it.
- Gone to work a few times and found it really easy
- Tackled a 20-40mph headwind round the north side of Skye that had me grinding at 10mph with hands so hypothermic I had to use my wrists to shift the left STI.
- Made it up to 39.8mph on the West Linton TT Moor Road.
- Done the Bealach Na Ba twice, and only praying to be killed for mercy's sake on nine or six instances.
- Had my sister's partner pretend to own it rather than disillusion as nice chap in Perth.
Other than that, those Genesis guys just make utter junk. Avoid at all costs.
I am a cheerful chap, it's true.

Perhaps this?

You can use it to photograph lots of bicycles!
Cheers Bruce, very helpful... :)

Get thee behind me Santa. Quite Fancy a tlr but I've got enough cameras.
"I've got enough cameras"
I may have more cameras than bicycles, they don't all work.
I use more of my bikes than my cameras.
I used to have two (cheaper than Rolleis) TLRs. Lent one and never saw it again.
Just looked, the other isn't where I assumed it was...
Oh I've definitely got more cameras than bikes though I generally only use one or two much like my bikes.
Pictures of the 2016 cdf look bright, I did hope they'd do a white one to match the mtb. Specs are a bit low I guess I can always upgrade as I trash bits.
CX riders, what tyres do you run?
I don't particularly want another bike with loads of tyres and reconfiguring all the time. I hardly use my mtb on road despite having rack and tyres for utility use simply because it requires to much organisation swapping round.
Finally ordered my cyclescheme voucher, better go up and arrange a bicycle.
Re tyres, I just keep my CX tyres on all the time. Maybe you would go a teeny bit faster with slicks if you were riding on the road a lot but they really do not stick to the road in the way MTB tyres do. 34mm gives a good blend of speed and comfort IMO. And then you can ride off road any time you like.
Cheers Min, thats exactly what I wanted to hear! I'll keep my Gatorskins just in case I feel the need to do an Audax or fast tour.
Are you going for the CdF in the end? Mine is apparently due in tomorrow (has already been delayed twice in the last two weeks) and I'm getting a bit excited.
Thats the plan, I haven't get round to ordering one yet but I'm going to try to get up to the coop this weekend and get my name on one. I'd like to sit on one before I put down any money, though I've got a voucher any way...

2016: The Year of the Gravel Grinder

They seem to have quite a few to choose from.
Yeah the whole niche seems to have expanded big time.
Q. What's the difference between a gravel/cross bike and a disc braked tourer?
A. Frame material, braze-ons and a big dollop of marketing?
Mudguards??
"Frame material"
Isn't steel the new carbon in this sector?
A. Frame material, braze-ons and a big dollop of marketing?
I would expect somewhat more relaxed geometry on a tourer and most "proper" cross bikes don't come with guards and rack eyelets.
But yeah the whole gravel/adventure/b-road/what ever does seem to be the marketing term of the year.
I'm looking at the specs for the 10 and trying to decide if there is anything I should salvage from the (to be) mothballed racer.
Not sure if the Brooks clone is a great idea on an offroad bike.
Also I wonder if my Tiagra chainset would be better than the oem one.
"Isn't steel the new carbon in this sector?"
Judging by the EBC link above, steel is a relative rarity, only the Genesis has a frame made of such stuff. Aluminium alloy mostly, mix of Cromoly steel and carbon for forks...
Wheelbase doing CDF 20s for £799...
When you get your CDF, I'd seriously consider a tyre upgrade. They are seriously flimsy and I got 4 punctures in abut 600km in less than 4 weeks. Apart from that, delighted with mine.

Geoff Apps specifies a Brooks on his Cleland Aventura, and did for all previous Clelands, I think.
2016: The Year of the Gravel Grinder
That page doesn't seem to make sense because it talks about a "good cross bike (AKA Gravel Grinder)" but they're different things, unless we're just going to settle on "everything which can go off road but has drop bars is a cross bike".
I'm not really into cross but AFAICR cross bikes have pretty sharp angles - only a bit less than a road bike. Gravel bikes have slack angles (slacker than a tourer). Check the head angle on the Salsa Warbird for instance.
I guess that's because in cross you do a lot of tight cornering and racing at close quarters, whereas on a gravel grinder you're racing a hundred or even two hundred miles, and doing more sweeping high speed stuff on really loose surfaces?
I could totally get into gravel I reckon, if they had events here.
I didn't realise gravel bikes were a thing I assumed they were just marketing for not-racing cyclocross bikes.

Coming next year. Be careful what you wish for...
So not just a thing, a fairly mental thing!
Will 29ers eventually meet gravel bikes from round the other side of the mountain? Isn't gravel just a mountain without too many sharp drops over exposed outcrops, or is gravel more like speedway but with a longer, rougher track and brakes?
