Well it is the 1st of September today!

    "

What is the Audax 'season'? Audax rides are run on most weekends throughout the year, but for Awards & Championships points are accumulated over the period 1st October though to 30th September of the following year.

I've signed up for Etal U Can. I've not decided whether to risk the train yet.

I may do the long dark teatime of the soul - it was good last year

.@ScotRail Can we see the #bicycle space on the refurbished #Class158 trains please?

Not suggesting you should 'martyr' yourself, but perhaps contact them and try and find out how 'flexible/understanding' they intend to be that weekend.

Who does one contact? The person on the 0344 811 0141 number was not helpful at all

Hah - DaveC - which thread to use!

Looking forward to the Etal-U-Can. I am going to risk the train - so nobody else nick my spot!

Tomorrow it's the aptly named last calendar audax of the calendar year "The Long Dark Teatime of The Soul". This runs from Gala to Longtown via Castle O'er (missus). Cake stops in the Eskdalemuir Community Centre and a garden centre.

Last year the weather was interesting but the ride still enjoyable. This year hopefully the weather will be a little nicer.

I must be looking at a different forecast. Winter bike, rain, mist, darkness and wet leaves. Maybe I should be staying home to supervise teenage party as my wife has suggested. And I am skint.

Last year's started dead cold - hoar frost on the pass over to Eskdale. Then the rain started at the turn back north along with a hike in temperature.

Tomorrow looks like being much warmer - wind not too strong - rain stops before we start but a chance of light rain at times en route. Beeb/Met forecast for the region is "A rather cloudy day with some patchy rain in the morning. Dry in the afternoon with some bright or sunny spells developing, the best of these over the Borders. Scrounge your train fare from the teenagers and I'll buy your cake

It's a DNS for me, yet another this calendar year. Just too much on my plate.

Next year, I've promised myself to actually ride some audax events, not just enter them...

Ha! Thanks Adrian. I'm already into the teenagers for a considerable sum. I could shoplift for food but I need receipts.

@cyclingmollie - you could start a new trend of Ultra Audaxing where you have to forage for food on the way ;-)

Aye, but proof of passage? Thorn scratched arm from a berry bush ain't gonna cut it...

stolen mile markers or road signs? Makes it doubly hard as the weight you dragging round will get heavier the further you go.

Perhaps digitally time stamped photos of those same things? A wee camera is lighter, and there's the added bonus of not breaking the law.

Bank autoteller receipts. But that's just rubbing it in.

Not many banks in Eskdalemuir. You could steal a monk's habit instead.

    Would a printed balance do?

Yes, you can use a printed balance from a cash machine at a free control.

That was very very wet. But warm rain, mind. Plus cake, rice pudding, lentil soup etc. The area around Castle O'er is very much worth seeing at the moment. The autumn colours are ridiculously beautiful.

Kudos to Amir for taking a drenching in pursuit of audaxing glory...

I always find starting off in the wet the worse.

"The autumn colours are ridiculously beautiful."

Many years again me & Mrs HC went stateside to do the whole 'New England in the Fall' thing & very pretty it was too.

When we got back we realised that the colours are just as wonderful back here...
I got my own glimpse of it today on my November long ride - The Clyde Valley was particularly colourful.

    Lovely here!

Not wet for me. Some early fog heading down the A701, but the sun soon burnt that off.

I'm on track for an (imperial) century ride each calendar month. The winter ones are usually the toughest but not today. Feeling smug that I've got November in the bag without having to be on ice watch.

That ride was a hard, wet slog. Started off at McD's after kipping at the lovely Lucy & Dick's in Gala. Met a few old and a few new friends. The rain was more like mist to start so I just rolled with it. But as time went on it got wetter and patchy rain passed over, and over, and over! Eventually I figured I was soaked and a rain jacket would not help.

So Eskdalemuir's new community centre is a real jewel and I recommend a visit as it would be a shame for this beautiful new asset to close through lack of business. After a hearty 2nd breakfast we set off again into the cool weather but were warming up after 15 minutes. The colours were beautiful and as we climbed over towards Long town we received another soaking but as we neared Long town it had stopped and we were drying, slightly.

Long town and lunch at WhiteSykes Garden centre before heading back just before 2pm.

The return was kinder, with a tailwind and no rain. Soon we were nearing Eskdalemuir and a Huge bowl of Rice Pudding. Then leaving I ad dried enough to put on my jacket but was too hasty as I heated too much and spent the rest of the ride with every thing unzipped to cool down. Darkness crept up and soon I neared Ettrickbridge and a few familiar lights ahead. After riding the wrong way down a closed road in Selkirk we found our way back to McDonald's and the Arrivee. 11 hours I think.

I think many made the same mistake with the waterproofs. It was that sort of rain, that slowly builds and builds and before you know it, it's too late. That Castelli Gabba stuff looked the right kit for the day.

@chdot the forecast for the day showed a fairly narrow finger of rain pretty much on our route (and nowhere else). It seemed accurate.

    @hankchief so you're an imperialist?

@hankchief hope you have luck with the weather in December. It'll be a great achievement

It's not just the weather you have to be lucky with...

My mate, who did the first 7 months' rides with me was one of the fallers on Talla during TOB...
