Fens is by far the toughest bit of LEL, apart from yorkshire... oh and that other massive hill, and the hills into London. Nah it's all flippin hard. Awesome to watch them all doing so well in tough conditions.

Brutal!
Well done that man!

Fantastic effort, well done!

Superb effort and great commentary on twitter. Well done!
would be interested to hear more thoughts on the "I had a ________ ride today thank you" thread?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Heroic effort! It must be good to stop pedalling

Well done HankChief!

Amazing ride. "Chapeau" doesn't cover it.

So pleased for him - buying a Helios a few years ago obviously helped ;-)
Amazing ride and sure he will have some tales.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I assume he'll be riding back home?
Posted 7 years ago # -
Back home from the station? He's on the 3 O'Clock if I recall correctly.

Just catching up on this thread. I notice the tandem in Laidback's pictures has a nice his and hers paint job. It's all black and white except for the parts the stoker sees (bar and frame) which are bright pink.
@Sirwobbly's hands have seen better days (not for the faint of heart)

I have volunteered to collect Hankchief and his bike from Haymarket. Is this a good time to test his helios towing the bike carrying trailer?
Posted 7 years ago # -
@biketrain, yeah as he will have recovered on the train. Just let him know he is cycling up the hill

ETA Haymarket 19:28.

Safely on the train home and have eaten 2 bags of food so far.
A quick summary, more at some point.
What a rollercoaster of emotions and energy - had a number of good and bad spells, sometimes not very apart. Getting to the next control or getting the pedals turning again was sometimes all it took to change things.
Thank you everyone for your support on here and Twitter. I did get to read most of them as I was shovelling food down, where internet was available.
My overriding memory was of the tremendous support from the volunteers the length of the country and the commoradery from fellow riders.
Arriving at all times of day and night we were welcomed with a smile, hot food and plenty of helpful advice. Amazing that people give up their time to help others, often on very little sleep themselves.
With the riders, everyone was looking after each other. More often than not I didn't know the name of who I was riding with but people were happy to help each other. I have no idea if they all finished or not, but I hope they did.
The rider I met in Thirsk with a sore neck which prevented him sleeping or looking up and had his helmet strapped to his armpits by an inner tube to keep his head up, was given shelter from the wind and kept awake for 250miles. He finished with us this morning.
Overall it was an fantastic experience of human endevour and perseverance. Amazing what can be achieved.

Great stuff HC.
That rider sounds like he had Shermer's neck.
Now you have 1 train journey and more specifically another year to prepare Mrs HC for TCR06 ;-)
Posted 7 years ago # -
Unlikely Paddyirish, having done a long ride and seen what can be achieved, I'm in no rush to repeat the experience.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Many congratulations HankChief on completing this ride for which "epic" seems a bit of an understatement. Hope to meet you on a (shorter!) Audax event some time.

Bunnet to Hankchief

@HC
"Unlikely", not an outright "No". That is as good as a "yes"... :-)

Looks like Cliff is on track to finish tonight.
"
I'm feeling brilliant.
Got to the head of a train through the fens and derny'd them to St Ives.
Going to leave here at 1930
"We need people like Cliff to take the wind for the team, not to mention getting me out of a hole by taking my bike down. Top bloke :-)

@HC - if you want your Strava segments merged together into one file, let me know; I can do this fairly easily.
Posted 7 years ago # -
@frenchy, Yes Please. The harder ask is to find another 7am starter and copy their data for the first 5 miles because I forgot to start my Garmin. D'oh.
Don't copy the data for the chap who 100m out had his tyre burst from a badly fitted mudguard though...

So turns out that downloading other people's GPX files is (now?) a Premium feature. This means I can't mass download them the way I was planning, but I have found a workaround. It'll just take me 15 minutes instead of 5, and I need to walk the dog the now.

The @sirwobbly Pashley Governor adventure came to an end at Spalding. Timed/knee-ed out.
Heroic stuff.
