Can we have a reluctant cyclists thread? ;O)

@steveo, as I said upthread, there's no requirement to do that sort of thing, any more than you have to take part in this sort of foolishness on a bike...

    @DaveC LOL.

    You're a glutton for punishment! :)

Actually, hill reps are something I've been considering both on the bike and running. My general fitness has come on enormously over the last few months but I could do with getting stronger for mtb'ing hill reps are probably the easiest way to do that.

Can we have a reluctant cyclists thread? ;O)

One consequence of the move to the Gyle is that probably is me these days. :(

I've not been feeling great and haven't run much at all for the past 3 weeks, so decided to go down to the 5K on Saturday. Then went and had a fab run today - including a PB on my George Square to Arthur's Seat loop.

anyone else doing the Movember run on Saturday?

As the great and wonderful Graeme Obree says, training is bad for you, training plus recovery is good.

Was planning to take Friday off. Can't run tomorrow either. So, will do the 7km loop on Thursday, if the weather's decent and hopefully be in good shape for Saturday?

@SRD nothing you do now will improve your performance on Saturday. You can make it worse by doing too much this close to your event! I'm not saying don't go out at all, but less could well be more at this point.

(I'm slightly confused - are you going to do the 5km or the 10km in the end?)

I hope you enjoy the run on Saturday.

Thanks fimm. I'm just aiming to (1) not embarrass myself and (2) not hurt myself. So have gone down to the 5k

I'm aiming to do a 10k in the spring.

Pleased to say that I not only survived, I actually ran faster than I expected to, and could probably have done better. The downhill was a bit scary - the road was very wet and I couldn't see well, as I'd taken my glasses off half-way through. Also got a stitch on the downhill. My last 1k was slow - now I wish I'd pushed more when people started overtaking.

Anyway, happy with 30.49 considering the climb and atrocious conditions, after several weeks of lurgy/asthma. Not much slower than my previous 5k PB on flat as a pancake Cramond foreshore.

Yay! Glad it went well given the utter grottiness of the weather today.

Well done SRD! Arthur's Seat isn't the easiest place to run round.

Inspired by SRD's efforts I actually Went For A Run yesterday. Willingly, not just because i was late for a train.

Fell over once due to a moment of overconfidence on wet grass, but surprisingly pain free this morning...

I'm aware that many folk run to get away from computers, but does anyone else Strava-ise their runs?

And would there be any value in a CCE reluctant runners strava group?

The additional motivation would certainly help this lazy soul...

I'm SRD2015 on garmin connect. Not sure if I want to strava-Ize...

But meant to say woo! And way to go!

Bit worried that *i'm* a good influence though!

I use endomondo purely because it's got my training plan built in I can never be bothered to transfer it to strava.

I Strava-ise my runs, mainly as motivation to keep a decent pace up and as comfort that when a run felt really bad I still managed to go at a similar rate as some of those runs that felt easy. I know a few others on here do theirs too.

There is a City Cycling Edinburgh group feed on Strava, but there are a lot of folk on there that I don't recognise (then again, there are a lot of folk on here that I wouldn't recognise either :-) ).

@SRD Strava can be connected to Garmin Connect to automatically copy all activities on GC to Strava so you can do both while still only uploading to Strava. DCR has details here

Also, you can use https://tapiriik.com/ for free to set up syncing between umpteen sites.

I'd be interested in a Reluctant Runners Strava group though. Would be good to see how often paths cross if nothing else.

I strava-ise all my runs (but only some of my cycles). I'm on the group too so it shouldn't be too hard for anyone to find them if they go looking.

SRD: the social side of Strava is a handy bonus, and automagic means that stuff appears in Strava as soon as it gets to Connect. Depends on what you want from your online tool of choice!

I'm on the existing Strava CCE group, but it only appears to be tracking cycling rather than runs.

    Posted 9 years ago #
  25. Strava CCE group is a cycling group so only shows cycling.

Garmin connect will auto upload to both endomondo and strava (as well as mapmyride and possibly others).

You do have to set Garmin Connect to auto upload to Strava or wherever - it won't do it automatically.

I've created a Reluctant Runners Strava group. If it ends up only being me then I won't be offended (and will of course claim to be top of the leaderboard each week...)

Couldn't leave you all alone so joined up. I feel a bit of a con as I'm not exactly reluctant anymore (although I did start out that way).

Generally I see running as a chance for perfect, hermetic introversion. The thought of recording or sharing the event verges on the heretical. Does this make me an oddball?
