    You may have noticed an increase in the number of bikes available in shops with belt drives.

    Eliminates chain oiling and dirty trouser legs.

    There are other advantages - longer life (compared with chains), but also disadvantages - gear limitations (generally need hub gears) and frames with a gap for fitting the continuous band.

    Whether belt drives are a passing fad or fit certain niches or become more mainstream remains to be seen.

    One highly innovative manufacturer is putting expertise and resources into the product. Schlumpf is best (but not widely) known for its neat and well engineered (therefore not cheap) 2 speed gears inside the bottom bracket.
