    PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release Glasgow – 16th November 2015
    Research reveals:-

Glasgow’s Cycle and Pedestrian Accident Blackspots

CTC Glasgow wants analyses of cycle and pedestrian accident data to inform the siting of 20mph areas, ensuring that their roll-out is prioritised towards covering roads with higher cycle and pedestrian accident rates
    Accident distributions:
An analysis of recent cycle and pedestrian accident data has shown clear patterns for accident distributions, revealing that they are mostly concentrated.
    1. In the city centre (cyclists and pedestrians)
    2. On parts of radial arterial roads leading into and out of the city (cyclists and pedestrians) 3. At some roundabouts, particularly those on the SW of the city (cyclists).

    1. Pedestrian accidents tend to concentrate in the city centre, for example on Union St, Renfield St, St Vincent Place, Argyll St, Stockwell St and Glassford St. Cycle accident blackspots also concentrate in the city centre but some major roads in the West End have high rates, for example Byres Road, Great Western Road and Dumbarton Rd.
    2. The study reveals that blackspots for cycle and pedestrian accidents additionally concentrate on arterial roads leading into the city centre, particularly where there is a combination of shops, on-street parking, frequent junctions and no cycle facilities. Examples include sections of the arterial Kilmarnock Rd, Victoria Rd, Dumbarton Rd, Argyle St, Maryhill Rd, Byres Rd and Shettleston Rd.
    3. Roundabouts, particularly on dual carriageways, tend to have a bad record for cyclists. Auldhouse roundabout is the highest single cycle accident locality in the city. Other roundabouts such as those on Shieldhall Rd, Paisley Road West, Barrhead Rd, Langside Ave (Battlefield) also have problems.
    CTC position:
CTC Glasgow, on behalf of its 885 members in the Glasgow area, commends Glasgow City Council for its proposal for a 20mph speed limit in the city centre where it is anticipated that implementation will help reduce the number and severity of cycle/pedestrian accidents. CTC Glasgow also notes that 20mph limits lead to more considerate diving styles and encourages walking and cycling as the healthy option.
CTC Glasgow takes the view that default 20mph speeds in the city centre are just a step in making the city a safer and better place, and asks that the Council take serious note of the recorded accident distributions when prioritising further areas for 20mph implementation. CTC Glasgow further urges the Council to make 20mph speed limits the norm for Greater Glasgow, and in particular to include arterial roads and roundabouts which are shown to have significantly higher than average numbers of pedestrian and cycle casualties.
