I've had to check three times now that that's not Steve Burgess fourth from left. If I didn't know he was really tall I probably still wouldn't be sure.

Well done to everyone involved. This is a significant achievement and simply wouldn't have happened without your hard work, dedication and very high boredom/BS thresholds.

A brief review for those reading after the fact
Lesley opened the meeting and invited Phil Noble to speak whom if you have been to any meeting you will recognise as 'the council officer' who has spoken at such events.
Phil ran through the changes that have been made in the past 12 weeks since the committee delegated the ultimate decision to Paul Lawrence (Executive Director – Place).
We began at Roseburn.
The following changes made applied pretty much equally to options 'A' and 'B'
1. The 'Tesco' junction now has a pedestrian crosssing on all legs
2. Filtered permeability at the junction of Roseburn Pl and Roseburn Gardens is no longer planned
3. To compensate for this, Roseburn Gardens is proposed to be one way North to South with a cycle contra-flow, and no-right-turn from Roseburn Terrace. This means there is little to no opportunity to rat run. There is a more comprehensive list in the committee document.
As hank_chief briefly explained to me later, point (1) came about as at some point there has been a change in the assumption of not having an 'all traffic stop' phase at this junction. This allowed the development of option 'B2' presented (item 2.3 page 12) with an improved quality link directly into Roseburn Pl. Not much time was given to discussing this option in detail, however it was in my opinion considerably better than Option B1.
Moving then on to West Coates, in all options the bus lane swaps to provide priority on the approach to Roseburn.
At Haymarket he explained the main point of contention was the taxi rank. The new proposal is that the circle directly outside of the station is re-converted into a rank for six-ish taxis with a long feeder rank on Morrison St. CCTV will show when there is space to move forward from the feeder rank. Such a design is usual at major stations. There will be consideration given at detailed design to a short additional rank on the other side of the road. This was accepted as the best option by all stakeholders.
There were no further changes made between Haymarket and York Place, but with the caveat that the development of several third party projects needs to conclude before the final-final shape of the complete route is clear - Melville Crescent, Randolph Place, George St and Elder St.
The table was then passed to the six elected members on the working group who asked a few questions,
1) At what point does a change in detailed design become major enough to come back to committee?
Answer) It is not anticipated that there will be any major changes to the proposed plan, and the statutory processes of TRO and RSO allow a further round of public objections and consideration by the Transport & Environment Committee2) Seeking clarification as to the review processes being put in place and how robust they will be
Answer) Assurance from L Hinds and later P Lawrence that the review process will have teeth3) Question as to why in option *B2 (edited) there is not a link from West Coates to Russell Road
Answer) There isn't sufficient road space for a route on both sides, but the question will need to be revisited as part of the Roseburn to Canal project.Probably a couple others but they don't come to mind.
After the Q+A all six councillors gave, a handful of caveats aside, unanimous support in recommending Paul Lawrence select option A.
Paul Lawrence spoke briefly to say he will ratify the decision of the working group's report, and gave particular thanks to the officers in charge of the project for maintaining their professionalism throughout a tough process.

@ Klaxon v. useful summary
"1. The 'Tesco' junction now has a pedestrian crosssing on all legs"
So 'the fuss' (and subsequent working group) was worthwhile.

The little ride probably helped (and WC's pictures from the bridge).

Worth mentioning that the public gallery was entirely well behaved with not a single guffaw or heckle throughout.

CHAPEAU! To everyone involved here. Its a big day in making our city healthier and fitter and a little bit easier to cycle across

This decision is like finding a small, flawed but very real diamond in the burnt-out remains of 2016. Everyone who played a part in bringing it about should be proud of themselves.
This is the development we'll need to point to over the next decade, when the 'local traders' and 'cycle campaigners' of Leith, Newington, Colinton, Morningside and Comely Bank make the same old arguments.
Time to take a few photos for the before and after, maybe?

Interesting perspective on community empowerment from one of the Lothian MSPs;
He rightly points out that decarbonising transport has to be a priority, but I'm never sure how high-level goals like that fit in with giving 'local residents' power over things like sections of city-wide cycle networks.

Businesses at Roseburn will go under to accommodate a bunch of tree hugging cyclists.
Where was EEN commenter 'Asa Wass' when those placards were being scrawled/taped together?

IWRAS - Janette Sadiq-Khan has some things to say about "community empowerment" which is often another word for "NIMBYISM".

Some good stuff in that BC article.
"
One day, the Chief Executive of the company responsible for this activity gave a lecture. Afterwards I asked why the Government was giving millions of pounds in tax breaks to wealthy people in London to plant trees in the far north of Scotland? Why, I remember asking, did the Government not use the money it was foregoing in tax receipts to provide grants, or even loans to the farmers and landowners who owned the land in Caithness so that they could plant the trees?
I don’t recall his answer but afterwards, my professor took me aside and suggested it was not a good idea to ask such political questions.
From that moment on I decided that asking such questions was a splendid idea and, the more it made folk uncomfortable, the more I enjoyed it and in a sense, that is all I have been doing ever since.

It WILL happen!
I'm as surprised as a surprised person.
Great to hear this positive news. That'll cheer the festive season right up!
Well done to everyone who lent their support to the proposals and gave constructive, reasoned feedback to council officers, councillors, community councillors, etc.
(Though watch out for the TRO comment/objection process coming soon).

@IWRATS "This decision is like finding a small, flawed but very real diamond in the burnt-out remains of 2016." This. Oh thank you yes, this is exactly what I came here to say. Thank you everyone who made this happen and bring on the diggers, I can't wait!

Absolutely fantastic. Well done hankchief and friends. That is one great piece of campaigning. Still flabbergasted that option A has been selected but as everyone has said this brightens up the end of a miserable year!

"Absolutely fantastic"
Yes
"Well done hankchief and friends"
Yes+
"That is one great piece of campaigning"
Indeed
"Still flabbergasted that option A has been selected"
There were undoubtedly times when it looked like easy options might have been taken - perhaps build a route to Haymarket and then 'try again'.
Clearly Lesley H was convinced that Option A was the best and worth a fight for.
I don't know Adam Mcv wanted/expected (assuming this is accurate)

(No reason to think it isn't.)
Of course it's unfortunate that a lot of this campaigning was necessary.
It's easy to understand why the traders felt threatened, can't be easy running a small business in such a hostile (traffic dominated) street.
Pity most don't seem to have paid much attention to experiences elsewhere and considered the opportunities on offer.
It's really unfortunate that a 'champion' came along and offered false hopes and falsehoods.
