Decent bit of progress recently on CCWEL, the eastbound section on Melville Street is pretty much completely surfaced. Shame it's taking so painfully long...

Page 237 to 246 has the paper going to next weeks full council on compensation for Roseburn traders.
It suggests (that if agreed) compensation of £3k per trader should be granted - £100k in total for Roseburn Terrace.
But raises concerns about setting a precedent and where the money will come from...

4 different motions to be discuss at tomorrow's full council.
Labour Party haven't put their own motion in.
Green say no compensation
SNP, LDs & Tories all have their own motions with slightly different points being made on why Roseburn is special and looking to take the funding from a leftover business support fund. We'll see tomorrow, what version wins out..

No compensation for traders.
Green & Labour voted it down.
SNP abstained once their motion (to compensate) was dropped.
Lib Dem / Tories combined (for compensation) but didn't have the votes

So SNP didn’t back T/LD to get result they wanted??

No compensation for traders
Thank God!

LibDem reactions:

“Our way or the highway” from @EDWESTERNSNP - sitting on their hands rather than backing Lib Dem proposals (which included their changes) to help businesses in need. Staggeringly arrogant

Utterly shameful behaviour by @edinburghsnp despite their amendment being accepted they just failed to vote for support for our businesses in Roseburn. Politics over people as usual.

Roseburn traders thrown to the wolves by Labour SNP and Greens @Edinburgh_CC

Good news. Would have set a bad precedent otherwise.

“My business right now is four per cent of last year's December.”
Um that’s drastic, but all down to not being able to park outside??

Greens held their nerve,

@chdot, It's impossible to tell but I'm pretty certain that if he hadn't spent the last 8 years telling everyone that it would be impossible to do business with him while the work was going on he would be a bit busier.
I wonder how picture framers across the city are faring at the moment? With discretionary spending on a downward trend I can't imagine many are seeing the same numbers that they saw last December. Without any evidence I would also hypothesis that last December was a bumper year.

“It's impossible to tell“
Indeed
“if he hadn't spent the last 8 years telling everyone that it would be impossible to do business with him while the work was going on he would be a bit busier”
EXCEPT that that attitude should have endeared him to the vast majority of people…
No idea how much of his business is framing and how much selling stuff.
Might help if he had a website geared to internet retailing.

@gembo - I imagine park and ride is more their thing.

Well we'll find out if this is actually an issue beyond the traders making the most noise about it, hopefully the stroppy numpty hasn't set us up for another Tory councillor.

@morningsider Bdm-Tish.

@Yodhrin,
Based on the last election a third lib dem in the ward looks more likely.

Councils by-elections are badly broken - they don't take sitting councillors into account. So he's practically handed the seat to the Lib Dems.

The new priority for Russell Rd over Roseburn St has now been painted on the road and queues are now commonplace when heading North on Roseburn St (whereas previously they were more common on Russell Rd).
Looking back at the 2016 traffic modelling the Northbound routes were the ones taking the lion share of additional queueing from the project - principally from closing the Roseburn Gdns rat run.
A lot of people getting upset about it on local FB so I'm trying my best to point out that closing the ratrun is the main cause...

“so I'm trying my best to point out that closing the ratrun is the main cause“
And that’ll make ‘them’ happy?

Makes me happy :)

If they don’t like the queues now, they’re not going to have a fun time when the pedestrian crossing phase is added to the A8 junction!

From the latest project update:
In order to construct the cycleway on Haymarket Terrace we require to divert a Scottish Gas Networks main between Haymarket Yards and Roseberry Crescent. This diversion, and our subsequent works to construct the cycleway in this area, will require a closure of Haymarket Yards to all eastbound traffic from March to October 2023. During this time there will be a diversion in place via Magdala Crescent, Eglinton Crescent and Palmerston Place.
Possibly a stupid question, but why wasn’t this anticipated when the gas main on Haymarket Terrace was replaced a couple of years ago?
