I don't get it. I presume these are contractors that the council keep using, but why when they clearly can't do the job properly, over and over and over again? Is it that much of a seller's market they just have to hire the cowboys? Or some kind of stupid rule that keeps forcing them to accept crap tenders? Or is it just jobs for the boys?

Had my first go on the Leith Walk cycle lanes yesterday. Every bit as poor as expected. What wasn't clear from the photos I had seen was the state of the surface, it's really uneven.

Today, myself and Micro-Morningsider sneaked onto the new section on York Place and the older section that is open already. Surprisingly narrow for a bi-directional lane, especially on a street that is 95 feet wide.

What is also really noticeable is the George Street shaped hole in CCWEL. Very hairy cycling along George Street with a child, particularly towards the St Andrew Square end.

Depressing that the city continues to install infrastructure that fails so far short on design and is also shoddily built.

The beg button at the cathedral to cross Palmerston Place is ridiculous. Seems to be tied to the lights cycle at West Maitland St, think I (and the pedestrian next to me) were up to 2 minutes wait before we both chanced it, so not sure what the potential max wait is...

I get the feeling the cyclists beg button is not connected at all, whereas the one for pedestrians at least illicits a response from the lights eventually

Still pretty s**t though. Still prioritising motors over everyone else

"Edinburgh's Leith Walk needs new bollards 'urgently' due to safety concerns

A Leith Walk councillor said bollards were vital in order to protect pedestrians but stressed they should be "aesthetically pleasing" and not "plasticy"."

    https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburghs-leith-walk-needs-new-26579926

    And the inevitable Macavity quote:

"If we're going to talk about public safety on Leith Walk we have to talk about everything, including interaction between pedestrian and cyclists - we can't just look at the bollards.

"I've inherited a situation on Leith Walk which nobody is happy with - cyclists, pedestrians and some of the businesses."

Work on the City Centre West to East link (CCWEL) to improve walking, wheeling and cycling, as well as public spaces is now moving to Haymarket.

Work will start in the Haymarket area on 3 April 2023. This includes construction of the new public realm areas, resurfacing of existing pavements and construction of the segregated cycleway. We will be working in the area up to January 2024.

New Traffic lights at the Tescos junction are now operational.

They include a cycle specific lights which stay green then the main road light are red for traffic exiting Russell Rd. #Win

When would they go red? For a ped phase?

Completely unnecessary to have traffic lights for cycles here - this is motor infrastructure gone mad. I expect they'll be widely ignored.

    Car Brain Council

Oh, and the bike lane is guy narrow, particularly outside the shops - world class infra, don't make me laugh

So the layout for vehicle traffic heading east from Roseburn Terrace is basically restored to what it was previously: separate straight-on & right-turn lanes, with the straight-on lane highly likely to be blocked by “loading” vehicles.

How long before the new road layout is blamed for congestion?

The order of work has been really odd on CCWEL. Even tiny things like commissioning the new toucan on Russell Road before the heavily used Roseburn Terrace one.

Line marking in general has also been all over the place. The still under construction York Place cycleway was marked weeks before the already open section of the A8 cycleway.

There are some rather lurid allegations against Ms Jardine from an ex-Lib Dem staffer at the moment, so clearly she's decided to attempt something 'popular' ie populist

@Marun That staffer knocked my door a few years back and announced herself as my next LD Candidate councillor.

We had a very long chat on a cold night about how to break the car centricity our local area suffers from and I was optimistic about her becoming one of my elected representatives.

Sadly not to be, but I did find out later that her husband is one of my cycling buddies...

Slightly bemused why they’ve chosen to have the railing on York Place directly next to the cycleway (reducing the effective width) rather than in the middle of the buffer zone.

Are those kerbs specified in any standards document or when it comes to cycle paths, are CEC allowed to put any old cr*p in alongside that takes their fancy?

@MB - you mean cycle lanes don't normally have ramparts?

    @Morningsider

    «Aux armes, citoyens,
    Formez vos bataillons,
    Marchons, marchons!
    Qu'un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons!»

If I thought it was to keep pavement parkers off (and likely to be effective at it), I'd be a bit more sympathetic, but I suspect the truth is rather more half-assed than that.

Ha ha - yes, has the feel of a site manager looking at two piles of different sized kerb stones and thinking "+£@! it - they'll do".

My guess is that the path slopes towards the road and they have installed this to ensure that puddles don't form.

I’m assuming the gaps are where the feet of the railings will be mounted. Why the same flat kerb couldn’t be used the whole length I have no idea.

It’s going to feel pretty tight along there any time it’s busy.

Meanwhile in Roseburn Terrace, both 3D Cakes and Roseburn Cafe had seating on the widened pavement outside their establishments so their patrons could enjoy the sunshine this lunchtime...
