Never mind the rain, I’ve seen wider and less lumpy millraces than that bidirectional abomination

And why does this hand-rolled wavepark tarmac nonsense KEEP HAPPENING? I wrote to CEC weeks ago to complain about the Russell Road surface and explain the problems, and they never even acknowledged me.

Who is signing off this work as "OK"? Is anyone in authority even testing it before opening?

    @Arellcat
Glad it's not just me that thinks that. As well as Russell Rd., a recent trip up the WoL to Spylaw had me thinking it had been done with an eccentric roller.
It's as easy to do a good job as a bad one, do Clerks of Works even exist anymore??

    Rant over.

It's particualrly stark on West Coates where the freshly laid road is smooth as a mirror and yet this isn't the case for the cycle path; it seemed to be a very manual process Edinburgh CCWEL Laying tarmac by Chris Fleming

Most of the A8 section is machine laid but presumably the unit is too large for the compromised sections like Haymarket Terrace which is 2m at points.

A quick google suggests you can get machines that will lay quality surface as narrow as 80cm

    2 metres!? I can't believe it's even that wide...

I feel my FOI fingers twitching at the prospect of the question about clerks of works and project quality sign-off.

    "ride will end at Haymarket"

    Ok...

(so not really a 'link' then)

and let's face it, it gets a bit crappy as it jinks round various one-way back streets, the odd cathedral and alleyway complete with cars trying to park, then along an overengineered and incomplete Melville St (only really needed a filter on that street, not a multi-lane junction onto Queensferry), then across ancient cobbly rounded setts, then another dim back alley, then no clear marked way around 3-sides-of-a-square, then onto a massive car park street...

So all in all a bit pish

    “round various one-way back streets”

If you’re talking about Grosvenor and Lansdowne Crescents, neddie, I think both are officially 2-way for all traffic (unless something has recently changed). Customary use does appear to be one-way.

I cycled the whole route for the first time eastbound the other day - rather lost the plot after the cathedral, was halfway down Melville St before it dawned on me I was ‘salmoning’ - still have no idea what the official route is to the lane on the north side. Then the forced cobbles in Randolph Place… And the beg buttons at the cathedral still grovel excessively to the great god of ‘real traffic’ flow

Lest this sound like excessive airing of grievances, well done to all those involved for getting anything built in TiEland…

One further point - after recent resurfacing on the east side of Charlotte Sq, it is now No Right Turn for all northbound traffic into George St (the old island with lights is gone). There’s a placky bollarded lane on the square side (unmarked so unclear whether this is two- or one-way for cycling).

All this might be a reasonable idea if the pedestrian crossing (for there are no cycle lights) had a workable priority but of course it doesn’t. This is Edinburgh indeed

Good to see many CCE folk there today. I then cycled on and everything worked all the way to Work. The bollards at Charlotte sq east do look like a cycle lane to the unwary

Good turnout and nice to see some familiar faces. Took the opportunity to support a local business and got some excellent coffee from Hordeum while waiting in the cold/wet.

As well as Patrick Harvie and Scott Arthur, also saw Green councillors Chas Booth and Jule Bandel (and former councillor Nigel Bagshaw) and Christopher Cowdy from the Tories. None of the three LibDem councillors for the area were there.

A council spokesperson said the George Street section of CCWEL “will follow once designs and legal processes have been completed, adding: "The existing National Cycle Network route runs along George Street. CCWEL has always intended to connect to George Street, and still delivers an enormous improvements in provision of quality active travel infrastructure in the city centre with George Street in its current layout.”

Bit optimistic to suggest ‘complete apart from George Street’.

Various people said today ‘well it could have been done better, but at least…’

In view of the actual state of it, it’s perhaps surprising that there was an official event today.

Less surprising that the event was at the west end of Haymarket.

    Details are important.

In an hour or so today I saw too many ‘interactions’ between drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Mostly due to drivers not stopping/giving way when/where they should.

One taxi driver thought he'd done enough by giving way to a couple of pedestrians that he moved onto the cycle lanes causing a bike rider to do an emergency stop.

    Early days…
