Here here. It's easy (and perhaps important) to hold the council to account when they make bad decisions, but there's no question that at least there's a game changer of a link between Haymarket and Roseburn. I'd love to see it extended westward.

Daisy N was saying it first came across her desk in. 2014

I thought the young reporter kept a straight face when she asked to interview me and then asked why it has taken so long. I mentioned Conservatives and Liberal blockers.

Were the locals happy? yes I said the6 are Flipping cartwheels down the segregated lane.

    Why was it needed?

Because the cars are bigger than bars. Why do people buy cars that are bigger than bars. She was growing bored by this point.

I fear this excellent interview was not broadcast on the mighty Forth 1.

11 cyclists in @chdot's photo there. At typical car occupancy, they'd fit in 7 cars.

At 20mph, with two second gaps between cars, a queue of seven cars in that photo would stretch out of shot, round the corner, back to roughly the TV repair shop.

Looks like they're still thinking about cars as the number one priority...

Traffic signals this, traffic signals that, number of lanes for cars, bla bla bla...

@gembo, it's a shame you were cut off before getting onto your crusher concept.

Nice to see many people out at the ride, even if the weather was somewhat less than nice.

There were a lot of cameras out. One photographer clearly forgot he had the big lens hanging at his hips as he skipped about the cycle lane.

It was also nice to see the kids form Roseburn joining us, I'm not sure why St Georges weren't also on their bikes.

“not sure why St Georges weren't also on their bikes.”

    They did walk.

What happened in the 60s (or before) to alter street levels? All the Charlotte Sq outer pavement levels appear commensurate with the Georgian basement/railing levels. Sounds like loopy stuff.

It really does look like the road level on the central garden side of the square was lowered, see:

    https://canmore.org.uk/collection/1161570

Possibly to correct an adverse camber in the road around the square. In effect making it safer for cars to travel quickly around the square, removing the danger of rolling over.

It was great to see everyone attending the opening. I harangued an STV journalist about the difficulties of getting it built.

I was glad that Lesley Hinds turned up. She does deserve political credit for this.

I note that the Scottish Sun is whinging about Patrick Harvie not wearing a helmet.

The Daily Star's take is that locals say it's a pig's ear. I'm a local and no-one asks me. I've been really enjoying the crossings at the Tesco corner and the buffer zone between the pavement and the motor traffic on the north side.

An adverse camber would make it less safe to travel quickly. Unless the camber sloped down from the middle of the road to each side, which would make it safer for anti-clockwise traffic only.

Took my first run along the full length of CCWEL today. The section from Roseburn to Haymarket is genuinely good. Possibly a bit narrow in places, but easily the best on-street cycle lane in Edinburgh.

The route then appears to vanish on Roseberry Crescent and Landsdown Crescent. Took a wrong turn on Palmerston Place, but easily doubled back to find the route along the side of the cathedral. A mistake you would only make once, but better signage would be good. There is a short slabbed section of cycle track that is pretty hard to see.

Melville Street lanes are good, but the surface quality is poor. Randolph Place cobbles are better than before, but still pretty rough. The interface with Charlotte Square is very poor, but the new surface is good. I ended up cycling in a bollarded off section to get into George Street - not clear this is meant for cycling.

George Street remains its usual mess. Picked up the cycle lanes in St Andrew Square, which are pretty decent along to John Lewis - although quite a wait at the Elder Street crossing. Getting to the Sheffield stands at John Lewis, via the legitimate cycle route, involves three road crossings at Picardy Place.

Overall, the CCWEL is one major success (Roseburn-Haymarket)
and two less useful, orphan sections of route - Picardy Place-St Andrew Square and Melville Drive. Usage of these orphan sections will be depressed until they are properly connected.

    This is utterly hopeless.

We’re never going to prevent climate breakdown and its associated untold human suffering unless we start wholesale giving over existing streets and thoroughfares to walking and cycling

    Is this a priority?

Improvements to the historic west end street will complement the recently completed City Centre West to East Link (CCWEL) scheme, which connects Roseburn to Leith Walk via Haymarket and the West End with a safe and direct cycle route, as well as enhancing streets for those walking and wheeling.

    Is this true??

CCWEL was completed in March following two years of construction and will tie into a new George Street cycling thoroughfare delivered as part of the George Street and First New Town project. The scheme will additionally link with walking and cycling improvements on Leith Walk as part of Trams to Newhaven, the Roseburn to Union Canal route, due for completion this year, and Meadows to George Street.

I look forward to finding the newly opened cycle lanes blocked by works vans and stacks of materials, assuming they don't just close them entirely.

Possibly a dumb question, but where can I find a map of the CCWEL?

all I can find are updates, blurbs, descriptions and photos. I can't find a map with the route highlighted. It's driving me nuts.

Thanks, that's helpful, especially in the face of, "But you could just go on the route from the path to the back of Haymarket" coming from the same people convinced that the world will end because there's no left turn at the top of Leith Walk.

Also an interesting suggestion that the Scotmid closed because there was no deliveries parking, despite, it appears, the cycle section being on the other side of the road?

The city is full of trucks being parked across junctions, bus stops, crossing points, and even fully on the pavement, yet uniquely none of those drivers would deliver to this one shop and so it had to close. Seems.. unlikely

I understand that the ScotMid is one of many in its portfolio that has been leased to Nisa, and will be reopening under that brand soon. Not quite the “bike lane causes disaster” story.

    BEWARE #EDINBURGH #CYCLISTS
Anyone cycling south from Charlotte Square towards Albyn Place should look out for this strange road layout, especially after dark as the armadillos will get you if you try and exit.

Strange tweet as they're not showing how that area is blocked off - you'd have to be particularly inattentive to turn left from the carriageway and squeeze through the wands as shown here:

    From: https://twitter.com/johnrobson87/status/1768983957427642783

I guess space saved from the road diet could mean a cycle track around Charlotte Square to get to/from George Street?
