Yes, they need to include traffic management of vehicles coming out of Russell Road (which will become even harder if the turn left/turn right rat run is blocked) so that there is less stress and frustration around that junction. Council chaps at the meeting were saying that it was definitely on the table to be included in the overal design.

Very good letters LivD. You were probably being polite when you say, "If the end plan is diluted too much then it will fail in its objectives". I have an awful queasy feeling that we are going to be in a scrap over modifications to the Roseburn and West Coates sections. I am sure that any dilution in the plan in these two sections will have such a serious negative impact that it will result in zero increase in active travel and no benefits to the retailers of more footfall from pedestrians and cyclists.

@ih Important point! Any false compromise (narrowing, detours, no priority over side roads etc) will mean that many existing commuters will continue on the road but not attract new ones, making it worse for everybody.

Good letters.
Re Russell Road, when I was at the drop in, a lady talked about the problems of turning right out of Russell Road on to Roseburn St at the traffic lights if they weren't able to go round Roseburn Place. She said this was a problem for those living in the new flats off Russell Road.
I suggested in the presence of Allan Hutcheon (Council ProjO) that perhaps her problem (and that of other residents) was with the volume of traffic on Russell Road and that perhaps if it were shut to through traffic that would make their lives easier. She sounded surprisingly positive at this suggestion and Allan Hutcheon said that a number of people had also suggested this. And, of course, the world didn't stop turning when RR was closed for ages due to tram works. Long and short - the issues are too much traffic full stop, not bike lanes.

Thanks, that's excellent. Beautifully clear and concise.

"(which will become even harder if the turn left/turn right rat run is blocked)"
Presumably rat-running traffic only ever manages to turn left out of Roseburn Gardens when the south half of the pedestrian crossing stops westbound traffic?
If the Russell Rd/Roseburn St junction was signalled-up it would benefit peds/cyclists/cars - reducing/preventing the current argumentative logjam of half-sideways vehicles squeezing into northbound Roseburn Place traffic when trying to turn right out of Russell Road, filtering off those turning left out of Russell Road instead of their current system of blindly guessing whether or not something will swerve rapidly round the corner from Roseburn Terrace or Wester Coates AND providing another set of stop lines to temporarily store excess cars at. In return for the three-road traffic-green when letting right-turns out of Russell Road there could be a three-way pedestrian green phase - making it easier to get further west than Tesco or across the other side of the street might improve access to the Roseburn shops for people not inhabiting the same block (which is the only populace the bee-bonnet man should be using as the volume of people who currently have easy foot-access to the south-side Roseburn shops).
If all the proposed stuff to the west of the Gogar roundabout happens (and the improvements to the A8 cycleshambles) it'd be good to get some decent cycle infrastructure along the main east-west travel corridor in now, in case the extra people the development requires to head west all end up choosing to drive.

Some great comments on the Petition supporting the Proposals

"Some great comments on the Petition supporting the Proposals"
I recognise some of those names as being CCEers.
But more important, LOTS I don't recognise from anywhere!

"Presumably rat-running traffic only ever manages to turn left out of Roseburn Gardens when the south half of the pedestrian crossing stops westbound traffic?"
The traffic lights at the Roseburn St junction also create gaps I reckon.
Some drivers will try to pull out into the left lane (which immediately becomes a bus lane) and then try and merge right later. If I am in the car coming out of Russell Road I always try to clock the rat running traffic passing to my left. More often than not I end up winning the 'race'.
(I keep left, if I can, on the main road to discourage rat-runners from pulling out!)

and sustrans finally weighs in...

"finally"
Posted 8 years ago # -
But manage to not say anything particularly useful.
Posted 8 years ago # -
I don't know about that. They keep the tone nice and positive, as do PoP.
That's important: in past consultations folk have been too negative which has led to the council dropping proposals (e.g.. segregated lane from York Place northwards by Picardy Place...)
Posted 8 years ago # -
I feel Sustrans could have been more succinct and more unequivocal. Are they frightened of losing funding?
@crowriver would you mind expanding a bit (maybe different thread to avoid focus drift) on your York Place Picardy Place comment?

"in past consultations folk have been too negative which has led to the council dropping proposals"
Er, there's a different between "negative" and 'pointing out that something isn't a good idea'
AND ALSO 'pointing out things that would be better'.
For all its faults, Meadows to Innocent is a LOT better than at the start of consultation phase.
I hope that's the case for Roseburn to Leith Walk.
Unfortunately a considerable amount of effort has had to go into countering the actual "negative", some of which might have gone (more productively) in to looking at details along the whole route.

Morningsider suggested we go to work after PY on Friday on the meadows to innocent path. It was great.

"some of which might have gone (more productively) in to looking at details along the whole route"
I completed the electric consultation but also emailed in a PDF of scans of the printouts of the plans with lots of "support this, but please remember/consider" usability stuff scribbled on it, in addition to souring Roseburnites' cows' milk through the unwholesome magicks of my personal transport choices. If I have time this evening I was going to copy out the comments more neatly and send them in again.

For the benefit of those who haven't seen the plans and don't want to wade through the pdfs, I've stitched all the pieces into 3 pieces.

And an overview, I added where the ideal route should go in green.

If we're talking ideal, should continue along to Waterloo Place and down Leith Street, with options to Regent Terrace and North Bridge. ;-)

Some good news.
Cat Headley (Lab Holyrood Candidate for Western Edinburgh) has just signed the pro petition
And some uncommitted news
My SNP candidate (Toni Giugliano) is leaving it up to the local Edinburgh Central candidate (Alison Dickie) to opine on the scheme. Which is missing the point as I can't vote for (or against) her.
My LibDem candidate (Alex Cole-Hamilton) has said he supports it but hasn't put his name onto the petition. EDIT: He has now signed it too.
It would be good to keep the momentum up on the petition as well as the consultation itself.

ih: check threads on Leith Walk programme passim. Anyway it's all up in the air given possible tram extension, St James development, etc.
Oh and I agree with you re: Waterloo Place. The route does reach there, but I suggested in my response that they continue a segregated route down Regent Road and Montrose Terrace to connect with London Road further east. Preferable to mixing it on Leith Street for cyclists heading east...

HankChief:
Alex Cole-Hamilton has just signed. Good news - well done! Hopefully Marco Biagi will also follow suit.
I'm assuming our Green candidate has already signed?

"
Alex Cole-Hamilton United Kingdom, Edinburgh Feb 01, 2016 I support the introduction of an East West cycle route, I'm also keen to work with campaigners and local businesses to mitigate the impact on local shops in terms of deliveries.

Isn't that what the loading bays as shown on the plans are for?

"I'm assuming our Green candidate has already signed"
I've not managed to find one. I don't think they have a list candidate for us - relying on the regional votes instead.
I've given up trying to communicate with the Tory candidate as he's not on twitter and I can't be bothered having to switch to another channel just for him.
Posted 8 years ago # -
The local candidates have been out canvassing at the weekends - Labour and LibDems were around on Saturday. If I see the Conservative guy then I'll try to speak to him.
Posted 8 years ago # -
I liked Rosie's post last week about all the shops that have closed down and how Roseburn ought to be a much nicer area.
Does anyone know how to get a list of all the businesses that have closed in Roseburn in the last five years? Or a vacancy rate as compared with other areas? Failing that, any businesses that you can remember closing down there?

Living Streets response to the consultation. You can see where they are coming from trying to avoid any negative impact on pedestrians, but in my opinion unduly harsh on the cycle route which if implemented would make it unworkable for cyclists.
However, it does make me think that we (peds & cyclists) are fighting over the scraps in the corner whilst the motor vehicle gets all the spoils.

@hankchief I agree 100% and have said exactly the same to them (albeit using political science pretentious terms)
