Really disappointing. Especially that the conservative councillor is attempting to foment discord. I hope those in his ward will write to him.

Is this because they imagine it will make the traffic jam ? It is already jammed and you can already filter all the way through roseburn/murrayfield main road on your bicycle.

Whilst it is nice to consult this should be done on the basis of it is happening come along and make suggestions for improvements not short sighted nimbyist lobbying to try to scupper progress.

The school is down a side street from the new cycle development. They are saying that more traffic will go past the school to avoid the main road that is going to be changed. They don't give evidence for this, and it's not their place to give any opinion at all when informing of a consultation.

That is complete rubbish. Roseburn primary school is on a busy main road that is a cut through from murrayfield to the western approach road. There will not be more traffic generated by a cycle path?

You think more traffic will go past the school? All that should have been said in the email is 'There's a consultation you should be aware of.' Not what what you should think about it.

Not 'side street'. At right angles to the new development.

I can picture the school, the main road and the turn from the main road which is the side street. That is all clear in my head. I cannot see how a cycle path will increase total volume of traffic passing the school. If and this is a big if. More cars go down a side street then traffic calming can be put on the side street to make this a slower option thus keeping all the already existing traffic on the main road.

Whereas a cycle route would be something that would remove motor vehicle traffic from the area..?

As noted earlier, the opposition to this is beginning to mobilise. Someone in the EEN comments linked to a petition against it (only 6 signatures so far!) opposing the segregated route.

We need to strongly express our support for the segregated cycle route.

I notice 4 of the signatories are related to the petition proposer!
My wife went into one of the Roseburn cafes and they have set up a petition as well. Worried about deliveries and loss of trade. Why is it so difficult to get people to accept that this sort of thing will actually benefit them? sigh

"Why is it so difficult to get people to accept that this sort of thing will actually benefit them? sigh."

I'm guessing that the strong objection of small retailers to driving and parking restrictions, isn't so much based on their view that trade would be adversely affected, but rather that the proprietors themselves wouldn't be able to drive to their businesses and park outside for free.

According to traffic/activity datagathering cited at the stakeholder meeting a lot of the deliveries are already made by parking on the south side of the road and crossing over.

To finish the year with a bit of order, we should move the Roseburn- Leith Walk chat back onto this thread.

I think we got a bit lost at about this point

What you missed was the petition against the scheme (mentioned above) has now been signed by 2 local Cllrs (SNP & Tory)

The SNP Holyrood PPC seems to have a more open view to understanding the issues and has agreed to a ride around to see the issues.

Cllr Ross has shown in that Twitter exchange he is most concerned about parking.

Yep. Parking and driving. No willingress to look at evidence. No belief that other groups matter. Very narrow minded. Frank Ross's linkedin page shows him as a director of Essential Edinburgh - not a feather in the cap as far as I'm concerned, but more importantly, with his attitudes to active travel, not a good omen for improving the situation in George Street and surrounds.

Councillor Ross clearly doesn't know local business.

House of Hound on Roseburn Terrace only mentions walking and cycling on its webpage:

    http://www.thehouseofhound.co.uk/#!contact/c3px

Walk or Cycle: House of Hound is 1 Mile from Edinburgh City Centre, there are beautiful walks that will take you through the City or along the Water of Leith, from Leith & Stockbridge, adjacent to the Store or from the South and West of the City through Roseburn Park. You can also take the Cycle Path from anywhere in the City which will lead you and your dog to our door!

I always thought they seemed like nice people in that shop :-)

    Have also signed the petition.

I honestly don't understand how anyone can think the majority of customers to that row of shops arrive by car.

Off the top of my head on that row there are:

    - two pubs
    - a chippy
    - some hairdressers
    - a bookies
    - a cake shop
    - a dentist
    - an optician
    - a solicitors
    - a ScotMid
    - an antiques shop
    - an art shop
    - a couple of cafes
    - a couple of takeaways
    - the dog boutique
    - a PC repair shop
    - the, ahem, "sauna"

I don't think any of them would be destination shops that people would drive to.

And by the time you take away all the regular cars that are parked there for most of the day and space taken up by delivery lorries, there can't be more than about a third of a parking space per unit throughout the day.

There will be a much needed pedestrian crossing added at the other end of the Roseburn shops (by tesco) as part of the development. The pavement will be widened too. This will surely benefit the shops and cafes. There have been times when, with small children with me, I just haven't gone along to the other crossing to get to the other side and have shopped elsewhere instead.

@daisydaisy - yes, it's an awful trek to get from one side of the road to the other, & I've sometimes thought I can't be bothered.

@HankChief - on your post you've got the submission date as 1 March. I thought it was 1 February.

Re cars - quite a lot of people do stop for 5 mins to pick up something from the Co-op or the Delta takeaway.

I don't think all of the parking's being removed. It's going from 4 lanes of road to 3: two for driving, and one for loading bays/ bus stops/ some parking?

@Rosie - Good spot. 1st Feb it is.

Petition is now only 2 behind. Thanks for those who have signed it.

The petition is a bit of a gimic to show the local Cllrs that there is public support for the current designs and we can use it to stress that their job is to take a balanced evidence based approached when it comes to deciding between opposing views of different parts of the community.

The main thing remains that we should all be responding to the consultation through the normal channels (online form or email) by 1st Feb.
