@kaputnik Don't the Airlinks #100 go along there too?

@Wingpig possibly but don't stop at the Roseburn stops according to Google so I won't have included them in my list. Will add. I'll even be generous and assume they are running full too.

I don't recall Lothian Buses writing opinion pieces in the Chipwrapper when the cooncil voted to downgrade the buslane times of operation?

"We are excited by the opportunity for our drivers to harry motorcyclists without need to leave their bus lanes."

"We welcome the promised increased flexibility of enforcement along the Willowbrae Road bus lane, where our passengers are often distressed by the sight of car drivers attempting to make the confusing left turn into Willowbrae Avenue."

Aye, it is getting personal indeed. From the comments:

"Interesting that Peter Gregson (KidsNotsSuits is just him on his own) is concerned about the Council spending on a project he alleges will only benefit a small number of people.

He was quite happy to accept council money for his own "community video" project which seemed to only benefit him. Wonder how much hard-earned council tax was splurged on him over the years?

Once his funding was cut he seemed to get a bit upset with the Council and has spent the last few years running his grudge campaign.

Principles are interesting things, eh Peter?"

Yep, don't think that's very helpful. The EEN should remove those comments. Best to stick to objective facts.

This one probably more on topic. Whoever this LesterBongs is, he/she's having a go...

"Interesting that Peter Gregson (KidsNotSuits is just him on his own) is ranting below about the dangers posed by speeding cyclists.

Interesting, because he himself has admitted cycling on the pavement to get to his favoured cycle route because he thinks riding on the road is too dangerous.

Much like his attitude to council spending: fine if it benefits him but not for other people."

Was driven in to Edinburgh today, many tailbacks caused by illegally parked cars and vans. Including at one point an ambulance not able to get through at Othman road because of an illegally parked van. The segregated cycle way will reduce congestion in two ways at roseburn. It will stop illegally parked cars and it will encourage cycling. Win win.

I struggle with the idea that the emergency services won't be able to get through. As gembo said, loads of city streets are nose-to-tail in both directions and side streets are narrowed by inconsiderate/illegal parking.

As usual, people seem to think congestion has nothing to do with cars.

Whoever LesterBongs is s/he's heroic, and if s/he's on this forum, I doff my cap to you. Lester always comments factually and politely to the rabid anti-cycling comments in the EEN. I'm sure the comments about Gregson are accurate and I'm glad someone is prepared to take him on in this way.

The KNS guy has spent the last couple of months lying, misrepresenting facts, making outrageous claims and insulting named cycling campaigners. Calling him out on NIMBYism and hypocricy seems pretty tame in comparison.

More power to your keyboard LesterBongs!

I reckon this dispute is being ignored by 99% of the people in Edinburgh and if the plans do go ahead they'll be met with a shrug of the shoulders.

Outside of this forum, Roseburn residents and the EEN outrage have you heard anyone make any comment on them? None of my colleagues have mentioned it, even through some are quick to make their opinion heard on all sorts of other things.

    An expert writes -

    "

Cars are everywhere and the roads are shabby. But putting cycle tracks on arterial routes is most definitely not the best solution.

Well, here is somebody's chance to rebut his points paragraph by paragraph.

"The route, by Balbirnie Place and Haymarket Yards, is a perfect fit for the job"

    His rhubarb, my emphasis.

If he truly believes that NCN1 through Haymarket is a perfect fit for anything he's not a very observant cyclist, unless NCN1 is the only thing he's ever cycled on apart from the footways of Roseburn or a knife-edge track around the rim of an active volcano.

How does a route which begins at Haymarket and ends at either Russell Road or West Coates "avoid main roads"?

Perhaps he should suggest to local parents that he accompanies their young children along this safe route so they get to experience it for themselves.

It does reinforce that no one really pays much attention to the EEN: this piece was published yesterday but no one had seen it until he posted the link.

No comments on it yet - I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

  21. @Stickman Could your text with the arguments for the cycle route be an article in the EEN? Perhaps an open letter with several of us signing?

In the end, discussing the arguments here is all very nice and useful, but many people still just read the (printed) paper.

I went through Roseburn Terrace for a poke yesterday. At about 17:10 the footways were busy but the roads almost deserted - there was a lone private motor car parked outside the Scotmid, a few cyclists going in each direction and a few cars and vans waiting at the lights to turn right into Roseburn Street. It reminds me of the Leith Walk consultation stuff, where there's more than enough roadspace for twenty-three out of twenty-four hours but the insistence of so many people to drive themselves through during that remaining hour convinces those people that the roadspace is insufficient.

    Stephan:

Yes, could be a basis for a letter. I'm happy to put my name to it. Don't know if I'll have time today to work it into something more readable.

I wonder what the "tramwork chaos" and associated change of road use/design has done for businesses along the route. Particularly Leith Walk. My impression from living in Leith was that overall, some businesses had indeed stopped trading, but others had filled their places and the overall trend has been of improvement. So not wanting to do anyone or of their livelihood, but is it unrealistic to hope that the dud businesses go bust and the adaptable ones survive and attract new entrepreneurs to fill in the gaps?

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/opinion/letters/letters-how-not-to-install-a-successful-cycle-route-1-4032897

Letter referencing the new Milngavie cycle route.

"The problems are as follows. Originally a cycleway was designated on each side of the road, which worked perfectly well. However the local authority in their wisdom decided that a dual cycleway on one side, with cyclists riding in opposite directions to each other with raised kerbing separating it from the road, would be an improvement.

This has created only one lane for traffic heading towards Bearsden on a main bus route, so that when a bus stops all traffic is held up.

    ...

Another problem is that the bus stops and bus shelters are located between the cycleway and the road, causing passengers to cross it before they can get on to their bus. "

(And another anti-Roseburn cycle lane letter further down on that page).

And another letter focussing on the east end:

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/opinion/letters/letters-cycle-route-must-not-be-at-expense-of-pedestrians-1-4026624

"The walking environment on Princes Street is already poor in comparison to the main shopping streets of Edinburgh’s competitor cities, with excessively long crossing times, uneven surfaces, low quality materials, unfinished tram works and badly dropped kerbs.

The last thing it needs is a segregated cycleway taking further space from people on foot and causing significant conflicts at pinchpoints that are already operating well above their comfortable capacity for pedestrians, as well as at some of the city’s busiest bus stops."

I'm not sure what referencing Princes Street has to do with any cycle lane debate? That's already been given over for Lothian Buses to turn into a diesel-fragranced bus depot interspersed with the dull thunk of the electronic tram bell as they turn all other lights red before them, while black cabs fill in any gaps inbetween as they race eachother to the next red light. As far as I'm aware, the council aren't looking to change that particular status quo any time in the future.

@cb: In respect of the the Bearsway, I think that the existing "2-way designated cycleway" was just the usual painted lines which were parked in all day, ie not a cycleway at all.

And if the writer is saying we should learn from bad implementation then why not look to good implementation, say somewhere like the Netherlands? I suspect they won't make that leap though.

EEN letters page? Pay it no heed except as a source of amusement.

Some time ago I was a member of a shadowy group which called itself the Top Slot Club. We would meet regularly to consume fine wine and regale each other with the ridiculous, fictitious or absurdly eccentric missives we had successfully had published by the EEN. The more ludicrous and creatively satirical, the better. A nincompoopish pen name was a bonus too.

On my way home this evening there was a large Chelsea Tractor "loading" outside the Roseburn ScotMid, a second car "loading" just in front of it and finally I saw a taxi driver leave his vehicle so that he could "load" in the chippy.

That cycle lane will cause CHAOS by reducing the number of lanes.
