@Harts It was Wednesday evening I was there and the shutters were down on the Roseburn Cafe.

Ah, yes. Sorry. Well there was definitely something afoot in there last night. I wonder that the next offensive will be...

"I wonder that the next offensive will be..."

All shops will give customers their goods in brown paper bags with one of those "documents enclosed" stickers prominently attached. All regular customers will be given a toy black-and-white cat to leave on their dashboard whilst visiting the shops so that they can claim to be a courier loading an important package for delivery.

Maybe they're going to try and infiltrate the cycle campaigner training next weekend.

I hope they were discussing the court judgement in the case about the London mini-Holland scheme in Waltham Forest. The complainants took Waltham Forest Borough to court and came up with all the same spurious arguments that the Roseburn lot are spouting.

The judge was excoriating and made an order of several thousand pounds against the complainants.

I was at Roseburn Terrace yesterday evening so stopped for 15 minutes between 6.15pm and 6.30pm. Here are a few random observations.

I cycled along Roseburn Terrace this morning after PY Feb (about 9.45am), and noticed that:

    1. On the south side in the spaces marked "LOADING" there were two vehicles: one car (big VW or Audi) and one van. Neither was being attended to.

    2. The overwhelming majority of traffic was heading east. It was such that the several pedestrians who were (still) waiting to cross to the north side of the road were all corralled into the island.

Talked to my local Murrayfield community councillor today. Apparently what the MCC really wants is to widen the pavements in Roseburn by 3', and they really don't want to get rid of the parking/loading because they had to fight to get it there in the first place.

And they don't want The Biking Community telling them what to do with their shopping street.

Did you ask them to take a tape measure to see how it would be possible to widen the pavements, keep the parking/loading and also keep that essential traffic flow?

Perhaps it's also worth pointing out that their "shopping street" isn't thriving, is polluted and congested so perhaps they need to listen to someone else. And they don't own this street.

    Fair enough :-)

I was bored the other night and skimmed the MCC website. They haven't got a successful track record of opposing things. Amongst the things that have got them up in arms over the last few years:

    - opposed new care home at South Beechwood. Now being built.
    - opposed new flats at corner of Ravelston Dykes/Murrayfield Road. Now built.
    - opposed new flats on Ellersley Road. Now built.

I am worried that they'll win one eventually and it will be the bike lane.

Seems to be an Edinburgh thing. Oppose, oppose, oppose. What possible reason could there have been to oppose those flat developments other than "we don't want it near us." A bit like this sudden opposition to the SKELF bike park as well.

Community councils by their nature oppose rapacious development. Good as developers need to be less rapacious. Harder to shift agenda to a more positive agenda of promoting items that improve the area.

Trying to win over mcc to th view I have that a segregated path will help the area but not allow illegal parking is a thankless task.

Roseburn Park and the Water of Leith look very sad with all the trees gone. Hope MCC and the local community appreciate the millions being spent on a minority in Edinburgh.

In the name of 'flood prevention' the willows by Ford's Road were cut down about 10 years ago.

    They have grown back.

Don't think the same will happen at Roseburn...

This is the nature of Community Councils. if one local person comes to them with concern, they feel duty-bound to oppose it.

Similar happened with bratwurst trike outside Napier - one local resident had nobbled CC chair and they ere ready to oppose it until I articulated a few points in favour -mainly that it was a local business, while most students seemed to be getting their lunches at Tesco and Starbucks. In the end, the Chair very kindly agreed that it was an amenity to the area. Sadly, they discontinued it - guess the students preferred Tescos?

I'm not sure why the antis feel the need to round themselves up to discuss their next offensive re the proposed street amendments. The consultation is now closed. The council will be sifting through the responses, discounting the spurious and considering compromise on the genuine issues.

Maybe they just feel the need for a bit of solidarity? I dunno. It's pretty difficult to plan a next move if you don't have any accurate information with which to plan..

Edit: Also, the flood prevention works make the park and river look really sad and miserable :( I hope they landscape it appropriately after everything is in place.

@SRD: Interesting - tactic is to get in with your objection first and sieze the agenda.

@Claire: the consultation report should be published next week as part of the Transport Committee papers (unless it has been put back because of the extension to the consultation period). The antis are probably planning how to get their grievances into the EEN in response. Presumably Spokes will be on call to also comment?

@stickman Ah, I didn't realise it was as soon as that! The consultation papers it will be an epic read. Do you know when the next T&EC meeting is?

Tuesday 15th March - papers usually a week in advance.

Should be a lot to get though - the Roseburn/Dalry plans should also be discussed.

Expect days of EEN OUTRAGE to follow.

EDIT: Scratch that. The consultation page says that feedback is expected 25 March, so it looks like it has been delayed. So won't make next Transport Committee, presumably won't be until next one in June/July then. Project delayed even further. It's no wonder things take so long to do in Edinburgh.

House of Hound do recognise that some of their customers arrive by bike:

@stickman well, this was why i encouraged people to join their CCs. just one calm voice articulating a reasoned position can have a big influence on the tone/vehemence/strength of subsequent positions.

Everyone's favourite cyclist has reopened his petition and is looking for more signatures. Amusingly he says at the top "don't sign it again if you've already signed it" yet he is the first signature.

    Posted 8 years ago #
  23. He discovered a conspiracy! From the new petition: "The Council has decided to postpone a decision on the cycle track until their June 7th meeting. Our main concern is that the Council expects the furore around the track to die down, so they will be able to slip the plans through on the quiet. "

Ooh, the council is totally evil. And there was me thinking the delay was just due to the fact that the consultation deadline was extended and probably received many more responses than expected so that the officers need more time...

Oh, nice community spirit from 3DCakes this morning, as they parked on the pavement outside their shop.

Stickman, He's clearly forgotten his playground shout to Hankchief telling him to close his petition as any more signatures wouldn't count.

Did you get a picture of 3D parking?

Actually, Mr Hi-viz may have a point. Everyone (especially the EEN) will have forgotten about it by 7th June. We'll all be in full EU referendum mode by then, and will have just recently voted for a fresh crop of MSPs. So I imagine cycle paths will be the last thing anyone has time to discuss. I don't quite see the purpose of re-opening the petition though, given it has already been presented to Lesley Hinds. Is it one of those things where every time someone signs, a wee e-mail goes direct to Lesley Hinds?

    Posted 8 years ago #
  27. We are probably all unconsciously biassed here and understand/appreciate the arguments for protected cycle lanes much better than the arguments brought up against them, so I find it really difficult to get a feeling how all this will influence the decision.

Still, I wonder if he's overstepping the mark. Normally if you want to achieve something, you have to push and push continuously, but if it looks and sounds increasingly obsessive with more and more accusations but much fewer rational arguments, then I would think many officers and councillors are put off.

In any case, I just checked his online petition and apparently it closed on 3rd February. So not sure how he has "re-opened" it? Just offline paper based? Please don't post a link to it if there's a new online one...

    Posted 8 years ago #
  29. @crowriver The old one was on ipetitions.com, the new one on a different server.
