Ah, so it's a new petition then? Well that is a bit bonkers.

He's expecting the same people to sign and will then claim them as new signatures.

Oh well, the more he continues with his lies and misinformation, the more we can show him up for who he is...

There were already duplicates on his original online petition. One of the retailers signed 4 times. I suspect nearly all the paper signatures were duplicated online, and then probably signed multiple times on paper anyway.

Do petitions ever have much impact?

Depends on the topic. A large mass of Lefty treehuggers? No. Small petition voicing the opinions of the silent majority? Probably.

Guys delivering boxes to me in Roseburn rang & said they were outside my house.

"But you were supposed to call me half an hour before you came so I could get home."

"That's all right, we'll go to the Roseburn Café for half an hour."

As it happened they didn't so I couldn't check where they parked, but they told me it's really good. So café owner has satisfied customers who will keep coming back.

This one had an impact: http://www.roadswerenotbuiltforcars.com/the-petition-that-paved-america/

It looks much more impressive than Pete's.

"Therefore we are keeping up the pressure on the Council by re-opening the previous petition, in the hope we can boost the current total of 2,600 signers to reach the 5,000 mark. This would then represent the views of 90% of those who live in the vicinity of the proposed track."

Interesting spin there. I somehow doubt all 2,600 signers were from Roseburn.

Response from the council cycling team. Sounds very positive for the Canal link. Wait and see for the other one.

The Roseburn to Canal project consultation report is being finalised and will be uploaded to the consultation hub website next week. This project is moving forward to detailed design stage and preparation for a planning application later in the year. A follow up consultation event will be held during this process with an update on the project and more detailed plans.

The Roseburn to Leith project has been delayed due to the extension of the consultation and the large response rate. The project team are currently reviewing the comments submitted and preparing a consultation review report. Following this we will develop the proposals in line with the consultation report which will include further discussion with key stakeholders and local community before plans are finalised.

Once this has been completed we will return to the Transport & Environment Committee with a final report on the consultation and seek approval to continue with detailed design and the necessary legal Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process for a recommended design.

The agenda for next Tuesday's Murrayfield Community Council is out (7.30pm Murrayfield Church Hall, Ormidale Terrace).

    http://www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk/meetings/next_agenda.php

    Including

    "
    5. Outcome of Roseburn-Haymarket cycle-route consultation

    9. Roseburn Action Plan, including outcome of 18 February walkabout and possible future projects:
    a. A ‘pedestrian safe’ area at the corner of Murrayfield Avenue and Corstorphine Road
    b. Installing an ‘island’ for pedestrians crossing from the north side of Roseburn Terrace to the south side of Roseburn Terrace, i.e. from the Dental Practice to Roseburn Bar

    "

Murrayfield CC need to get a tape measure. Fitting an island there and maintaining the lanes of traffic just isn't going to work, even before considering their desire to widen the pavements.

"b. Installing an ‘island’ for pedestrians crossing from the north side of Roseburn Terrace to the south side of Roseburn Terrace,.."

They don't need an island, they need pedestrian crossings, rather like the ones in the Roseburn to Leith cycle plan.

I am pretty baffled by the new anti petition - I saw it today with all the frothers frothing away on the Corstorphine FB page. I didn't bother to point out that the consultation is closed...

There was ample time for people to respond in the positive or negative through appropriate means. CEC will be wading through all the responses, discarding irrelevant comments and concerns and trying to compromise on legit concerns. I'm not sure how a petition will influence what is a pretty robust and well-understood process. Am I missing something here?

Keep the anger boiling. Project Fear (Roseburn) runs on outrage.

Was in a rather bizarre Twitter exchange with Frank Ross today. Someone pointed out to him the survey showing strong support for segregated bike paths. He replied "what makes you think I'm against this?" - other than his opposition to a segregated bike path, well nothing....

This whole fiasco reminds me of the greenways. Does anyone have a better memory than me? I remember when they were announced I was still obsessively married to my car and was convinced the new bus lanes would cause gridlock and be a total disaster.

Obviously, that isn't what happened. Was there a lot of pushback when the greenways were announced? I think that's a pretty reasonable comparison to what's proposed with segregated cycleways and the removal of space for cars. I'd be happy to use greenways as a solid example when I'm trying to explain things to people but I don't have much evidence other than my memories and how I was categorically proven wrong.

  16. @Claire Many drivers are still convinced that the greenways are a total disaster... that's why there was so much support for making them part-time.

We all don't base our judgements on statistics or rational facts, but on personal experience. Get stuck in traffic on the one day when you're late for an important appointment, and it influences your perception much more that all the days when you weren't stuck. And in stop-and-go traffic people overestimate the time they are stopped.

Top trolling by the council cycle team: a new poster has appeared beside the bus stop at Roseburn - "enjoy Edinburgh on foot and by bike"

Aye, there's another one on the corner of London Road roundabout too: oh I'm sure cyclists are enjoying the 'facilities' there...

"enjoy Edinburgh on foot and by bike"

Someone needs to prepend that with "Roads too hostile to"

There's one on Lothian Road too, at the bus stop opposite The Beer Kitchen.

So is the council's active travel budget being spent on these posters?

Presumably coming from revenue budget allocated to "promotion"?

Oh well, Paul Edie has blocked me on Twitter. Not sure why - I've barely interacted with him.

First blocking on Twitter (that I'm aware of!)

@stephan Haha, well I better just retract that comment then. I didn't realise lots of folk still thought they were awful. I've never heard anyone moan about them since they came in. The greenways are seriously useful. When they're off drivers don't use the lane as heavily, meaning I get a smidgen more space on busy main roads.

@Stickman, so your local councillor doesn't want to communicate with you, it doesn't sound very democratic. I wonder how many other constituents he is ignoring.

Anyone else going to brave the Murrayfield Community Council meeting with me tomorrow night?

    7.30pm Murrayfield Parish Church Halls.

This letter from Enfield Cycling about the behaviour of their local MP is very interesting. Exact same tactics being used here.

I though the greenways had “always” been here but looking online there is an interesting report about greenways A COMPARATIVE
EVALUATION OF GREENWAYS AND CONVENTIONALBUS LANES

There was what sounds like a very interesting event last night with Andrew Gilligan (London cycling commissioner). Someone was live tweeting it (@CroydonCyclists) and it's worth reading their timeline. One comment of Gilligan's struck me:

Gilligan says TfL don't give weight to consultation views based on lies. Not a referendum but a way to identify concerns and improvements

Let's hope Edinburgh Council take the same approach with this consultation.
