SUSTRANS isn't a quango, it's an independent charity. They have had quite a few different offices in the city over the years.

Given the length of the message Stickman has linked to (I could only read about half of it, before running out of steam) I think the guy is now well into green ink territory. All but his most ardent supporters must be getting tired of this now.

@Claire - do you mean the Murrayfield CC meeting? AT the church in Ormidale Terrace.

I'll be going, and a few others.

"Explain to them that we are not anti-cyclist and that we have our own scheme to improve cycling from west to east across the city, utilising the poorly- signposted and generally secret NCR1 path by Balbirnie."

Really don't think he gets it. Surely it's pretty obvious that if a route between Roseburn and Haymarket, which are within plain sight of one another, is "secret" and even needs anything more than basic directional signposting, it is probably the wrong route?

I see they're bringing up the "behind Tesco" route again as if that's at all acceptable and useful...

But hey, anything so we can easily drive to the café and park illegally outside.

That meeting is in my diary too.

Also, I'm sure a committee of petrol heads and NIMBYs meeting after work to come up with a route in a hurry will do a great job - much better than could be done by qualified traffic engineers, following consultation with the relevant user groups who would actually be making use of the path!

Reminder. Murrayfield Community Council meeting is 7.30pm on Tuesday 31st May - Murrayfield Church Hall, Ormidale Terrace.

Council Officers will be reporting on the results of the consultation.

Going to be a cracker. Do come along.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing their design. At the Spokes hustings event he said that he didn't believe in segregated cycle paths so it could be quite special.

@Stickman - I assume it'll be a picture of a bike painted either end of Roseburn place, possibly a toucan crossing on Roseburn St, some painted arrows behind Tesco, a drop kerb onto the A8 (no crossing though) and then some paint within the bus lane along to Haymarket...

Is he planning to build a road along the existing NCN1 route so he can paint a line and a bike on it? Or does that type of segregation not count?

@newtoit I did have a local Cllr suggest just that to me...

We shouldn't be so skeptical. I've just heard from a reliable source that they have a plan to integrate cycling space into Roseburn Terrace without compromising parking. Here's an early concept sketch:

It'll have to be a bit higher to accommodate buses and there are some kinks to work out at either end, but I think it shows real promise.

Seeing his views on Named Person, I don't think he will be taken very seriously. This is really in green biro territory.

(and yes, the odder characters do write to ministers in green handwritten scrawls, which when copied a few times makes it very difficult to work out what they are complaining about)

    Another update from PG:

    https://www.change.org/p/city-of-edinburgh-council-petition-against-the-west-coates-cycle-track-in-favour-of-national-cycle-route-1-re-opened/u/16411784

Hannah Bettsworth, LibDem candidate for Edinburgh Central is against the cycle route. She's currently a student, won't win the seat and is second on the Lib Dem list so is extremely unlikely to get in, but disappointing all the same.

EDIT: anyone seen her campaign leaflets? Apparently they say she opposes the plan. Given the Edinburgh West one from earlier in the year which was very one sided then the LibDems aren't showing their commitment to active travel.

"If you get into Government, will you condone throwing £500,000 of our money at a track that nobody wants?"

Time to get writing to your candidates and expose his lies.

    Ho ho!

    From link -

    "

I am sorry to nag, but only 5 of you have written to the Parliamentary Edinburgh Central candidates. They can ignore 5. They can’t ignore hundreds. And there are 3000 of you who have signed. Please don’t think someone else will do it. No-one is doing it. If you want to stop the track, you need to act.

    "

Takes more effort to turn out for PoP.

There was some discussion about what good PoP does. I think being so visible does give politicians a price.

    Thanks for the link @Erob.

I note with interest that every clip of Roseburn Terrace had vehicles parked on the North Loading only side...

    Lib Dem manifesto:

"Support safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists with more dedicated and segregated cycle lanes"

That wouldn't be the Lib Dems saying one thing and then doing something else? If they don't watch they might start to get a reputation for this sort of thing...

Very one sided report from STV. Wishy washy comment from Cllr McVey. Nice shot of Dutch Lottery bike parked up at the end.

  28. It is very difficult to change the underlying assumptions just by discussions, so perhaps a way forward would be an experiment and create a temporary protected bike lane for 2 or 3 months with movable barriers etc.

Then we can see how it affects traffic flow, shop business etc., and one could also test out particular details.

It would be much easier to agree to such an experiment than it is to agree to a permanent expensive design change.

Stephan- is that how Seville did things?

I would guess it would be impossible to do here. Look at the tortuous process of pre-consultation, consultation, planning applications, objections, TROs....

We did have the George Street experiment, so it can be done, however there's an issue that successful experiments have to be ripped out, pending the torturous process to implement the proven conclusions!
