" There is an ongoing issue at the school with busy traffic and dangerous parking outside the school. I feel the school is stuck in a vicious circle as parents drive children to school to keep them safe from traffic and so create more traffic which puts parents off letting children walk or cycle to school The catchment area is small, so walking and cycling should be good options for the children, and this would reduce the danger from parents driving and dropping children off."

Excellent blog, one of the (many) reasons why the route should be built.

The lollipop crossing lady wasn't covering Roseburn Place last term - a victim of cuts or do the council/school think she wasn't needed any longer?

Roseburn Place is traffic-free if you ask a certain self-informed local resident.

If you feel like writing your own blog post, please let me know and we can help get it published and out to wide audience.

It doesn't need be long but it is useful to hear what the scheme will mean to you.

As a reminder here is a selection of the comments from our pro petition earlier in the year.

Emailed Bill Henderson as well, moments after I pressed send this popped up on Facebook.

New York City's protected bike lanes have actually sped up its car traffic

    From link above;

" The new bike lanes even help local business; the city has found that streets with bike lanes are linked with more retail sales, new jobs, and more tourists."

Has anyone ever found evidence that bike lanes make these things worse? Don't think so.

I've just sent a reminder to my councillors and MSP. Don't forget if you're short on time you can also use http://www.writetothem.com to lookup and contact all your politicians.

Wrote to my three councillors last week. None of them sits on the transport committee but I asked that they do a bit of encouraging/cajoling in favour of the scheme.

So far have had only one response which simply stated, without further comment, that my email had been "forwarded to the Transport Convenor for her information". The other two councillors have not yet responded.

    Not really very encouraging.

I wrote to all my councillors again urging them to vote for option A, but alas have not heard back anything - at least nothing personal.

    On the council website here:

    http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory_record/626767/transport_and_environment_committee

there is a list of all the councillors - who would you say is most on the fence and worth e-mailing in particular?

(EDIT: sorry ih - I just saw you posted this but no harm in having it again)

Passing through this evening I saw that the Chores At Work unit (next to the old bank) is up for rent.

And 3-D Cakes were doing their bit for the local community by parking their van on the pavement.

I'd start with any on the Transport Committee and then move onto any SNP councillors (if different) and then the rest.

Don't be put off by a lack of response - they may be on holiday - it will have an impact.

    From marco biagi:

@hank_chief @branaby A is the best option. Full stop. But it's even best in purely political sense because all hate B and one side likes A.

This sums up why we shouldn't go for the option B compromise.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_to_moderation

Argument to moderation is an informal fallacy which asserts that the truth must be found as a compromise between two opposite positions.

Wow, just spoke to a local at Roseburn who cycles all the time. He thought I was against the path. He thought all of the cyclists were against the path. He said he wouldn't use it because he wants to take the most direct route. I told him what the route was, and he said that yes, he would use it. The level of deceit that has gone on blows my mind.

@daisydaisy: where did he think the path was going? Any idea where he got his view from?

    @Stickman I don't know, wish I'd asked.

Nick Cook replied to me, saying he's "supportive of a cross city route in principle", but that "Transport Committee have not been furnished with formal reports and evidence yet".

When is that expected to happen?

Papers usually come out a week in advance of the committee, so Tuesday/Wednesday next week.

    http://www.roseburncycleroute.org.uk/blog/edinburgh-councillors-decide

"This is a landmark decision for our City. The E-W route fills a vital missing gap in the cycle network, and so can help take the load off congested roads such as Queen Street all the way out towards Costorphine. What's more, we are setting a precedent that will affect many future Active Travel developments planned in our City."

Nice words of support, highlighting the challenges with current poor infrastructure.

    "

I am disabled cyclist using a recumbent handcycle to get out cycling.
There are a couple of additional concerns I have with the existing NCN1
    route:

    1) It isn't possible to handcycle up the zigzags from Russell Road
without having to stop and reverse taking a second (or third) attempt to
    make the turns.

    2) The speed bumps on Balbirnie Place are savage enough that my
handcycle frame scrapes when passing over them so I actively avoid using
this section as it is effectively impassable for me.

    "

This is a question I'd appreciate advice on from someone like Morningsider. Do you think there's anything to be gained from sending the Councillors a word-processed paper letter, or are emails just as effective?

Probably depends on the councillor(s) - whether they are 'fully digital' or might appreciate a proper letter in an envelope.

    Use nice paper.

(Maybe get your printer to do green...)

It will help to keep your local post office afloat. Otherwise, probably not.
