I really enjoyed the commute in this morning despite a close miss. It was nice and warm so I went on a longer commute for the first time in many weeks. It's much more peaceful than the direct route.

Out with a friend - Musselburgh, along the Pencaitland path (icey as chdot says, early on, but glorious light), Haddington then North Berwick where friend 'bailed' to get the train. Chased the Sun back.

Nice ride along the NEPN to meet up with Dave, LaidBack and Min for some photies with the Quetzel recumbent tandem. Nice apart from mistakenly believing that dry day meant dry NEPN and therefore no need to fix crudcatcher back onto trailer bike. My shorts are in the wash now.

Hi folks, long time reader first time poster! Had a great ride out today from Corstorphine down to Gullane and back. Sun shining, good pace, great view and a top bowl of soup at The Bothy just outside Aberlady! Only downside...the headwind on the way home! Oof!
Pleasantly surprised by the number of patient drivers down the coast road where it's sometimes difficult to overtake. A thanks also to the group of three riders who slowed to ask if I needed help when I was stopped by the side of the road (no help required fortunately!). Managed to pass it on when I saw a poor ERC rider fighting with his bike, wheels off by the side of road in Joppa.
This is what Sundays are for!

@amir, are you still encountering those "unnecessary hills" on your commute?
@deckard112, I was out that way on Saturday; along the coast to Longniddry then inland for a loop around Traprain and back to the coast again. I only stopped to shelter from the rain.

@chdot, I know but then I'd have missed a walk out from East Linton to Hailes with my youngest and the dog.
It's funny how few cyclists you ever see getting in out the rain.
The A1 seen from below as it crosses the Tyne near Hailes (there's a great wee back lane up on the top of the banking there which leads back towards Haddington):

In the darker months, more often than not I take the direct commute through Gilmerton, which can test my hip. Hopefully that's recovering now. I have been in Wales where the roads surfaces are delightful cf here. The hills aren't absent though ;) 20 mile rides are enough for me at the moment.

First long commute of the new year, and a nice old moon low in the sky. Lots of good interactions with other road users with only one slightly-dodgy-and-a-bit-too-close pass on double white lines to report.

Third commute of the year. Rode in and met up with Alan L from Kinross who cycled all the way in!! Way to go Alan! further than I'd be happy with, 2.5 hours apparently. Had a nice chatter about steel bikes (what else??) and commuting to and from Fife.

Despite Mr Truck today... New drivetrain (crankset, chain and cassette) was looooooooovely and smooth this morning. I need to tweak the old derailleurs (still plenty of life there) but the difference was remarkably notable over the old version.
Plans for some 'arty' recycling of the old cassette cogs and chainrings.

Lovely ride to Porty yesterday.
Mix of side streets, Innocent and main road to Picardy Place.
Really not much traffic - certainly not 'rush' hour gridlock - reinforcing the idea that it's folly to plan for those who 'have to' travel to work by car.
Also reacquainted myself with really quiet/attractive cross-town (south) route -

Up into snowy conditions in Dunfermline and along the Alloa disused railway/cycle path to Clackmannan and return via Kincardine and Culross (cafe stop = Spensive!!) 1/2 an inch os snow on most of the cycle way, but we all rode our CX bikes with Snow tyres on!

Lovely day today, if rather chilly. I took the opportunity of a day off to just roll up the coast and back, just beyond Tantallon Castle. There were a few flurries of snow by N Berwick but beyond that it was gorgeous sunshine.

BBrrrrrrr What an awful ride in today. Strong head winds and sleat and snow in the face most of the way. I took 1.5 hours this morning to get to work, when in sumer it takes me around an hour.... Heres hoping I'l blown home this evening!! Forgot to Strava this too...

A great morning was had at Glentress yesterday. Lowest carpark open only - beyond that the whole area was blanketed by about 5 inches of snow. Effectively this raised the trails by a difficulty level - blue turned to red, and red turned to black!
Very slippy indeed but it does make you think a *lot* about using steering and line as much as poss to control speed. Brake levers may as well have been labelled 'ejector seat - do not touch'. That's the thing about brakes...you don't miss them till they're gone...
Conditions were crisp and beautiful though - and our group only saw about 10 other people in total. The trails were still soft snow and there was very little ice.
There's a strange effect once you get above about 25mph on soft powdery snow, experienced on the fire-road... fat tyres start to 'aquaplane' on the snow leading to a very strange and decidedly unpleasant floating/drifting feeling!
Notwithstanding a spectacular downhill stack by yours truly which saw the bike and me land about 30 feet apart (no bruises), a very memorable day out.

I really enjoyed the commute in today. The roads were pretty clear apart from our lane and it was not as cold. It was lovely to be on the bike outside for the first time since Friday (and not having the self-induced threat of the turbo hanging over me).
I can see that I was lucky - the snow is now sticking to the roads in KB.

Me too. I really liked the snow without ice thing that was going on and the Innocent was really pretty.
I read an article in a cycling magazine not so long ago about why you should ride even when the weather is snowy and there was lots of photographs of the group of cyclists riding on perfectly black, ice and slush free roads with perfectly white and snowy verges. This was so far from reality I almost wrote a stern letter to the magazine in question. Now I know it IS possible, even if just once in a lifetime rather than all winter every winter as the article seemed to suggest.

Decided the roads would be dry enough for my fast bike (no mudguards), lovely.
Well worth blowing up the tyres for.
Shame I forgot about the time wasting temporary lights by Aldi in Gorgie Road!
Still, I managed to accelerate away nicely when they changed (eventually).

Just back from a most enjoyable ride around Carrington/Gladhouse/Auchendinny, mostly glorious sunshine and beautiful views of snow covered landscapes. Felt like spring !

Rides of rediscovery yesterday and today.
Yesterday I took the opportunity on a day off to do the first hilly training ride for quite a time. I cycled in via Musselburgh to do some circuits of Arthur's Seat. I wasn't quite as fast as I'd like but it is early in the year. I felt great afterwards. Arthur's Seat is a wonderful resource (if you ignore the driving).
Today I went on a running-in trip for my new winter tyres. This was the first time on the MTB in a long long time. I went up the Penicuik railway path as far as Rosewell then I went up to this lovely place by Edgelaw Reservoir. Well worth a visit and if you have the right tyres, you can cross over to the Carrington-Gladhouse road.
