"barrelling down the cobbles proved immense fun, offering my own little Paris-Roubaix fantasy"

I'm now thinking I might use this more often, just to liven up my commute...

Cycled into work this morning for the first time since 14th Aug 2014! Thats the longest time off a bike in years! Feeling much better! :O)

Great to hear it. I guess you must have been in early as I didn't spot you. (Unless it was you I grimaced at while holding my breath after inhaler usage).

Nice one! I had 6 weeks off my bike about 18 months ago and I can fully agree that it is hell. Indeed, when I was unplastered, I was told to not ride a bike for another 6 weeks. Needless to say, I was back on the bike the next day, I missed it so much.

I wasn't plastered, indeed I'm (nearly) T total! I had the dreaded Man Lurgy (TM), a close second in importance to the World Health Org after Ebola*.

    * allegedly!

A very enjoyable Spokes ride today. 14 of us set off from the Usher Hall towards Linlithgow, where we picnicked on DdF's lawn no less. Also a nice garden tour, teas and coffees. Then back via a great route down through Hopetoun Estate, not one I've tried before but will certainly ride there again. Passed under the in-progress new Forth crossing: massive structure!

Weather was perfect: not too warm, not too cold, just right like the porridge in Goldilocks.

Must get out on another Spokes ride before year end: agreeable company and interesting routes.

Boyfriend and I went out on Sunday to explore a new cycle path to Loanhead. We ended up in Roslin so went down through the glen and then back through Polton. The climb at Polton is quite steep! It was very nice apart from the eejit driver (see rubbish driving thread).

Replaced the BB in wee blue floofy over the weekend. It required the gentle care of The Bike Works to unseize it, a service for which I paid 1p. It turns out the mechanic had the same idea as me about BB tools that should screw into the axle for stability and made his own.

Anyway, the previous BB wasn't that knackered, so maybe it's because I cleaned the chain properly for the first time in months, but it's running slick as a greased weasel.

Tailwind helped; raced the tram from Balgreen to the bridge and was neck and neck for most of it, to the amusement of passengers.

(Assuming that you're getting the same deluge over there) I'm intrigued: does the beard increase in weight with saturation?

I managed to get almost eleven miles out of the larger child yesterday, walking the odd bit like the pedestrian crossings around Haymarket and up Candlemaker Row. I'd forgotten to pack any snacks so he managed the first seven miles on the WoL/NEPN on a single charge, on the promise of some Ryvita when we got to my office to drop off my shirts.

Given that your larger child is not that large, I'm impressed!

    "promise of some Ryvita"

One, some, or all of those words are wrong.

MRSRD used to be called the porridgenazi

I suspect that wingpig could give him a run for his money in parenting stakes

Had a great little ride to Aberdour playground with my 2yo on the back - she was very excited at any dogs, puddles and farm animals we saw on the way.

But the best bit was the 5yo getting her new bike (20") at the weekend as well. Hope this will increase our potential for more interesting family cycles no end.

I'm assuming that was aimed at Uberuce, but in my experience no. Then again, if you had a voluminous, fluffier beard, maybe it would.

Is the Coastal Path near you 5 year old cycle friendly?

    @chdot,

Unfortunately can't see your picture as work won't display it, but we can head eastbound out of our house (Dalgety Bay) for ~8 miles to Burntisland and it is a great path. Don't want to go further, as because AFAIK, the path is the main road to Kinghorn... She has cycled to Aberdour before on a tiddly bike and returned exhausted but very happy on the train.

Lots of steps westbound, but we can get round this by using a pavement cycle path and rejoin the path at St David's as far as Inverkeithing, which is as far as we would go.

Also some lovely stretches of path around Culross too.

I suppose it must, but measuring it would present logistical difficulties.

With the cooler conditions yesterday decided to go and test out new purchases of gilet and arm/leg warmers (they were fine). Set off thinking I'd see how I felt at various checkpoints (not been out on a long-ish ride for some weeks for various reasons) and ended up reversing a route I did some time back, resulting in ride via Aberlady, Haddington, Gifford, Pencaitland and back over Elphinstone. Interesting to view the route from other direction, nice to get another perspective!

Brrr! First properly chilly long commute of the year but oh it was lovely up on the top road between Balerno and the airfield - just thin bits of mist floating about, not enough to feel dangerous, just really pretty.

    Fabulous weather.

    Just warm enough.

NO WIND on the moor road to West Linton.

    Some wildlife.

    Some spotting.

    Some secondhand book buying.

    Some clouds.

Yes. That's a nice photo... (of course!)
This sign near Scots Pine on A703 which had a few cyclists in (forumers perhaps?)
Irene enjoyed it - even though our short ride ended up being 50 miles!

As I had to attend a conference at Dynamic Earth today, it was strictly normal-type clothing and minimal baggage. Not being one for sitting on buses and watching time slip by as we sit in traffic, it was time to press the Revolution Compact into service and turn multi-modal commuter!

The folder was fab to ride today and fairly zipped along. Actually it zipped a little too much as I remembered this wasn't a bike to lean into corners. Or a machine to even consider trying to stand on the pedals.

On the (utterly rammed-full) North Berwick train this evening I had a lovely chat with a guy about folding bikes. Had I taken the crosser with me, I'd never have attempted to get on the train.

Almost outnumbered uprights today at Park Bistro Philipstoun (!)

Nice ride out and warm enough to sit outside.
