Wow, I had a near identical ride in today. No fog this time so clear skies all the way. Lovely ride through the Dalmeny estate again and this time I took a few photos of the sun rising over Edinburgh.

There are a few on here but I don't have time at work to reduce the picture sizes at my desk so best to just follow the link.
Pretty quiet ride in today. I only saw three other cyclists before getting to Crewe Toll... 2 on the FRB and one as I left the Dalmeny Estate.

First time tesing my overshoes since I got them. Admittedly it's only a 20 minute test and this morning's rain wasn't heavy, but I unwrapped my feet in the office bike shed to find a pair of dry trainers on happy wee dry toes. Thanks, TBC.

What a lovely morning for the first commute in Feb! It's light(er), not too cold, and the birds are singing.
Plus spots:
- resurfacing road through Wallyford - hurrah - at last
- digging work in field on other side of stream to Innocent path in Bingham - houses?
- bike with both drop handlebars and suspension fork passed again today. This time noticed that frame seems to match drop bar style. Frame is a lovely red but with no markings seen and there are ducts (?) for cables.Posted 12 years ago # -

Not this time!

I don't often get to post to this thread, but we got up, looked at the sky and sun and threw caution to the winds (also the nappies, which have dried nicely).
Anyway, we hitched the trailer up, wrapped baby in many layers, and took daughter on ride to Cramond. Despite snow and hail, we have a lovely ride, capped off by a rather good lunch at the pub, during worst of snow storm. And even managed a wee explore, by coming back via Granton. Also a good shop at Sainsburys en route (that's what the trailer was for).
It was definitely K's longest cycle on her own bike, and she managed just fine - although getting from Dalry to Polwarth was, as always, a total pain.

I was out on the CTC run today, which went ahead once the leader realised that stormaggedon had been averted this morning. Though I was feeling a bit tired this morning after a busy week at work, the morning stretch was fine: wind to our backs most of the way, sunny and not too cold. After a packed lunch in Bolton village hall (where happily we escaped the hail and sleet shower that passed over), we set off on a loop round Humbie towards Dalkeith. Into the wind much of the time, and quite a lot of hills to climb. I have to say I struggled a bit on occasion, my earlier tiredness came back with a vengeance on what seemed like the nth hill that day. Managed but was not keeping up the pace and did feel I was holding folk up a bit sometimes. I was quite glad to get a cafe stop outside Dalkeith!
Still, good to get the miles in the legs: around 55 or so.

I was out this morning to the farmer's market, then an optician in the centre of town, then Welch's Fishmonger at Newhaven. Thoroughly enjoying the day until... puncture number 3 in 2 weeks as I set off from the fishy place. Oh, and broke both tyre levers in my tool roll. Pah. Puncture was weak enough I could get some air in and ride a mile or so, meant a couple of stops by that point to get the tyre full and get home.
Lovely lovely day though.

Sunny on the Lang Whang this a.m. wind chill and much ice to avoid moistly at side of the road but also scary bit right across [lot of burst pipes, stream running off etc]. Stopped at the ruin that sits in no man's land between W Lothian and S Lanarkshire. No wind, sheltered by the house - maybe it was a toll house? Right on the road. Could have stayed there sunbathing but still not quite finished the decorating.

Lovely day for a ride today, though very chilly. Went along coast, Drem, over bak Yak to Haddington, Boston, Saltouns ...
Like DaveC, knackered.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Thirded knackered. Had grand intentions last night of going as far as St. Abb's Head but woke up too warm and cosy and stayed in bed to the unholy hour of 11AM, so curtailed my ambitions a bit.
Up to Dalkeith, Carberry, Fordel Dean, Pencaitland, the Saltouns, Gifford, Danskine, up over Redstone Rigg, back on myself before Whiteadder and past Sancta Maria to Garvald, then picked up the homeward route of the Chimney Sweep along past Traprain as far as Haddington, home via A199.
Too much headwind for my liking! I was promised 10mph. Felt more like 20!

Yesterday, Lyndsey and I caught the 8am train to Cupar and had a fantastic ride through Ceres down to Lower Largo (and back). The air was shockingly cold to start with, but the sun was warm. The route was from '25 cycle routes through the kingdom of fife', and was mostly very quiet roads/tracks through woodlands and fields. The undulating hills, although beautiful, make 22 miles seem quite a long way :)
I ate a lot, we stopped at cafes/pubs four times (is that excessive?)... why does cycling require more food than any other activity???
Posted 12 years ago # -
Because cycling is awesome and you can get away with it.
I've said many times that in promoting cycling more should be made of the fact you can eat chocolate cake and bacon/veggie alternative rolls.

Depends. In some company, rides are spartan affairs, either no stop at all or just a break for a packed lunch. maybe a cafe if you're lucky. Other times, full restaurant meal and beer/wine! A few rides below ranked in order from Spartan to Luxurious.

First run into work on the no-stud tyres, and in the spirit of avoiding redundancy I flipped to single speed while I was changing tyres.
Feels a bit weird, but the silent tyres were lovely.

Nice climb this morning...
Posted 12 years ago # -
Not sure what I hit there. Meant to say...
Nice climb this morning... Yes really. Legs felt good, wind wasn't quite as strong as yesterday, and had ditched the cycle jacket and moved to lighter weight gloves, cycle cap instead of the beanie skullcappy thing. Felt like spring was in the air.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Spring is definitely in the air: it's already far too warm even with a single short-sleeve layer.

First outing for the recumbent with its new (January sales...) spinny, bouncy and whirly things. No spikey tyres, lighter than the upright, warmer, less windy, silent, smooth.
It's all good.

I had a quite tyring ride in this morning. A little wind on the bridge had me slowly making my way across. I only passed one cyclists going my way, on the way through Dalmeny village.
Still lovely skies and sun hiding behind the clouds and then not, shining right in my eyes.
I took a detour along Princes Street and casually sauntered along liking the smooth surface and lack of busses vi-ing for space with lorries and other road users, along the MTB track which is known more commonly as George Street. I should have actually ridden along it as I now recall sections were being resurfaced last night.
Bus home this eve and then in on my Dawes tomorrow. I'll have both bikes in on Thursday for the bike marking. p.s. Thats me on 700km so far this month.

Bike-a-holics Annonymous:
I had a lovely ride this morning...
I rode in this morning and met up with a nice banker (contract before anyone comments) just after the bridge. I had been trundling up the bridge approach passing cyclists and had settled behind one slower rider when I sensed someone behind me so I over took and rode over passing 9 Yes 9 cyclists on the FRB all
at the same time! [must be rush minute] Anyway he was still tailing me over the bridge so I let him catch me and we rode in together. He's a roadie but his BB is being replaced so he was on his Carbon Merida MTB (nice spec) and with his nobbly tires was easily keeping up with me. We took a detour through the Dalmeny Estate which he had not been through before, and rode the cycle path until Craigleith.I made good time as I got to work 1hr 5mins after setting off! Shows how fast he was, pushing me!
One slippery moment was at the track between S Queensferry and Dalmeny, I dropped down to the left turn towards Dalmeny and the rear wheel locked up on
the mud, I released and braked again but locked up. Managed to keep upright but it was hairy scary for a few seconds, and the other rider (Stewart from Dunning)
seemed impressed with my control.I really enjoy riding in with like minded people and its great to have a wee chat on the way in, pushing each other's pace etc...

Beautiful morning today. Very chilly start, even cooler once I reached the fog around Musselburgh. Curlews calling above. Once I started to climb out of Musselburgh the light was wonderful. Then on the Innocent, the mist hugging the stream was very photogenic.

(Yesterday)
West Linton and back.
Uphill against the wind.
Tea stop, (not my bikes).Almost dropped by the time we turned round.
This was probably the best bit of road - across the moor with hardly any traffic
http://peeblesshire.cyclestreets.net/journey/1698086
Managed to photograph the only bit of litter we saw.

That's a wonderful road that. And will be featured on the tour de moors.
Twas a nice to the afternoon today. Good for a quick spin. They were gritting the roads though.

Big thanks to chdot of this very parish for that ride to West Linton and back yesterday - it was an absolute blast. Coming back on the moor road with the wind at our backs really was a treat.

"Coming back on the moor road with the wind at our backs really was a treat."
Yeah, shame it had dropped so much!!
Posted 12 years ago # -
@chdot. those two bikes in the first pic. were they matching his & hers scottish frame builder with their names & address 30 something rd, on the diagonal bars? If so we saw, spoke & rode with that couple on Saturdays child freindly ride.
Posted 12 years ago # -
No.
30 year old Claud Butler and Falcon in (mostly) original condition.
Couldn't tell if it was 'careful owners' or 'rescued from a garage'.

Despite the impatience on the roads, and the folly of choosing East Claremont Street in all it's morning dew slipperiness, the legs felt better this morning than they have in ages. Maybe the hill training is working.
Nice ride on Saturday morning as well - out 'cross country' to Welch's Fishmonger at Newhaven, then back along the coast to Earthy Foods in Porty, before home for brekkie. Less than an hour out the house, and feeling so much better about myself than if I'd taken the car.

Having lost the first two months of the year to a very dull and tedious legal thing, I had a very pleasant ride to and from work today. Apart from the lack-of-fitness burning sensation in my lungs ;)
