When the haar comes in it is worth riding southwards. I went through the Moorfoots to Innerleithento Mountbenger, the St Mary's Loch over Talla and round to Dawyck, where my wife was waiting in the cafe. When I left the borders it was sunny and 17 deg, compared to 11 deg and mist at home. In the morning the wild life was wonderful.

I was out at Lunan Bay with my parent's beautiful miniature Schnauzer, Mum and sister. The haar pretty much nixed any chance of scenery photos, but there were a couple of groups of horse riders out along it that just looked absurdly dramatic coming out of the mist.

I was out quite early, went around about trip from Brightons to grangemouth, just felt right, went via alloa and the clackmana, nope kincardine bridge.I was a bit late but hey ho !( and I wasnt even sponsored !)

New chain, cassette, rear mech, shifter cable and a twenty-year-old chainring which might as well be new for how unworn it is resulted in that new-bike feeling this afternoon. All smoothyclickynice, except when on one of the smallest four sprockets, when the slightly non-optimal alignment of the old chainring results in a bit of skipping as the pins of the big chainring try to steal the chain. A smoothyclicky ride past six bike shops eventually resulted in some spacers.

@splitshift, Brightons eh? just down the road! No cycling for me, and our stroll with the Smudgling had to be curtailed due to a flat tyre on his buggy(!). But that's fixed now and I've repaired the broken mudguard on my folder as well this afternoon so it's all good progress.
Next the rear tyre, chain, cassette and freewheel bearings on the LHT, then I've just got a monster bike cleaning session to do and I'm back up to speed on the bike maint :-)Posted 12 years ago # -
Had a wee spin down to Cramond this afternoon to check all was well with the recently serviced Raleigh Pioneer Trail.
Lovely day. In shorts for the first time since last summer! No gloves necessary. Wish I'd had more time to do a longer run, but can't have everything I suppose.

Ride home from office. Short sleeves, sunny, lovely. 20 degrees, and its 26 march - wonderful.

WoL route, quite, serene, birds tweeting (though no hash tags), someone with a bike and a tent camping out in the trees, a convoy of 7 cyclists on Russell Road through the tram bridge building works, the fresh air refreshingly chilled, took the same amount of time by river route than by road and diversions + traffic lights, zooming down the final stretch at St Bernards well and getting 'air' from a tree root, a lovely shower at work to warm the numb hand....

Mr fimm and I went out into West Lothian on Sunday. We found a Scary Hill to go down (which made Mr fimm very happy) and ended up getting coffee and cake at the Park Bistro near Linlithgow where there were lots of cyclists. The waitress was quite surprised that we'd cycled all the way from Edinburgh!!

I used to head out to West Lothian quite a bit in my youth and would often try and incorporate that hill into the route.
Not having a speedo I'm not sure how fast I ever managed - can't-spin-legs-any-faster-on-an-18spd-MTB speed.Posted 12 years ago # -

@DaveC, I recall you were going some on the way down from Redstane Rigg. I managed 45mph on that descent, it's still on my computer as the maximum speed so far this year...

The northbound contraflow down Torphichen Place looks like it might be nice for resuming a s.taking a similar route home to that I used to take way back when Queensferry Street was open, except without having to sneak past things to escape Canning Street to the W.A.R. Coupled with increasing adjustment to my current componentry it made for a pleasing trundle home.

Nice ride in this morn but on the way home I was too hot and for some reason I felt knackered following my collegue as far as Standingstane Roadbefore we went our own way. He's usually the one complaining I'm going too fast. Though I have had a cold for over a week now so thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

I went up through Balerno and up to Threipmuir reservoir enjoying the sun. I seemed to remember the path round to harlaw being paved, turns out it was less than ideal for a 23 mm tyred racing bike.... Still lovely up their with the late evening sun. I had a lovely ride.

Steveo, we do a similar ride most Weds eves from Haymarket returning to TollCross for a couple of pints before getting the train home. Its a lovely ride and tomorrow eve is the first of this season.

@fimm This hill is a better bet for a fast descent in West Lothian. It's not as stupid steep as Kingscavil, so you're more in control. And it's looooooooooong. Think I've got up to 45mph on it.
Just watch out for tractors coming out of fields (you can see over the hedges from the top).
It's not as fast as the drop from Redstone Rigg to Whiteadder in East Lothian, which is where Kaputnik managed his 53mph. I was following him but given my Garmin records speeds at x second intervals, and I was too busy keeping my eyes on the road after seeing it break the 45 mark, I don't know if I got as high as K...

53mph sounds quite scary fast. I once got my mountain bike up to an indicated 51mph on the Ratagan to Glenelg road, but the speedo wasn't well calibrated so it was probably high 40s at the most. Still scary though, particularly with sheep crossing the road.

Did over 50 coming down off the lecht, that was scary and I had big mtb disk to try and slow me down. I wonder what the "terminal" velocity is of an unpowered decent on a "reasonable" slope, ie not vertical.

I have 50.9mph on my cycle computer from NToEL, but I'm down for the Snow Roads in June and that takes me over the Lecht and Glenshee I think.
Other than that I had a lovely ride in this morning exept I was planning on taking my bike on the train in as I have an evening ride tonight as well as my commute home (~35m in total this eve) and didn't want to over do it for Saturdays 200 Nippie Sweetie but the train station at Inverkeithing was RAMMED even after one train left the platform headed in the Edinburgh direction, so I just cycled in.
I changed into my summer garb (except for Ron Hills on the legs) and it was quite cold again coming in. brrrrr.

Fastest I ever got was in the Bathgate Alps, on the way down into Bathgate. I hit 55mph on that stretch of road 20 or so years ago, neither my legs, nor my brain would allow me to go at that speed now! Highest now in low 40s.
