Lovely quiet misty trundle yester-evening, with lots of interesting lighting effects where my three-dimensional mist-shadow was swinging round me as I passed streetlights.

Here's a neat route idea I came across in 2012. I don't remember who came up with it, however.

    Edinburgh Urban 50:

I did a 50km around Edinburgh way back in May, it was good but I do need to refine the route a little:

@chrisfl, over Maudsley Hill (by Cammo Tower) is certainly an interesting choice, not to mention the slope down the field before it. If anyone was planning to follow this in drier weather I would suggest sticking on the western edge of Cammo Park and crossing the Almond by the army barracks. Then along the north shore to rejoin your route at the Cramond Brig.

It'll be a mud bath at the moment though.

Maybe a "should have been a lovely ride" comment. I headed out last night about 8pm after kids had been shipped off to sleepy land for a MTB up the WOL through Balerno to Thriepmuir and back via Harlaw, Clubbiedeen and Torduff (checking commas there but have given up on hoping they're correct)

Has been a long couple days and probably more hours than I'd have liked with eyes locked on the computer screen.

I could not get my head in the game. Felt uncomfortable and agitated the entire way. The mud/horse poop on the WOL annoyed me and I rarely felt actually good on the bike. There was no moon. It was too dark. I really just felt pretty down frankly until the very last 10 minutes to home where I suddenly felt all that lift and blasted down to home and felt somewhat cleansed. Hosed off bike, shoes and myself, then thoroughly enjoyed making a Bolognese to freeze for the kids before bed. So "I didn't have a lovely ride" but the ride did sort me right out in the end.

    Wrong thread? Maybe. Maybe not.

@ARobComp - not at all. Cycling is one of the few things we can do that allows us to feel 'in control' - even though having to go out in the murk the other night to move boxes from one shop to another is 'working'!

Looking at a screen for work and then having leisure on another (or same) screen is not ideal - although we all do it. I blame forum for my addiction @chdot :-)

@arobcomp, notic3d a lot of manure on way to your mural today.

Longest I have spent looking at it. Creator puts himself in it several times.

Friends of the water of leith doing path repairs on the new path just before the bypass. Built over the river when the big mill was sold and the land was sold for housing development.

    Something(s) wrong there(?)

I went out to collect food this evening and randomly chose Iona St to get from Easter Road to Leith Walk. It has been resurfaced and is almost flat - hopefully it'll stay this way for a least as long as the tramworks take to complete and provide a nice vibration-free route for retrieving panniersful of partially-liquid take-away.

On Friday I did my favourite leisure loop and enjoyed it greatly, including a go on the Musselburgh BMX track.

May have been illegal of course and if it was I did something else.

In what is becoming a regular Saturday afternoon fixture, I did a 40-mile loop of the hills of Balerno and its environs this afternoon. I was feeling fresh after a recovery week, and smug because the resulting FTP and VO2 Max numbers (very important numbers for those to whom such things are important) were the best they have been for ages...

    Anyway.

It was glorious out there: calm, crisp and sunny. There were lots of bikes and riders of all kinds. Going up the Exponential Hill, I fell in with two mountain bikers who said nice things about my bike and generously intimated that I was doing intervals on the hill (I wasn't). A social media influencer of this parish said nice things about my jersey.

I whizzed round at a good pace (for me), enjoying myself hugely. On the way back, at the top of Kirk Brae, I uttered an involuntary 'Wow' and was brought to a halt by the spectacular hazy sunset over West Lothian, with a view that extended beyond the Ochils. The view eastward was dominated by a huge moon hanging over the city.

Utterly spectacular. What a lovely day to be out on a bike.

A tale of two burns with the kids. From Porty up to Braid Road (mostly) along The Figgate/Braid Burn. Across Mortonhall to pick up The Burdiehouse/Niddrie Burn (mostly) back to Porty. Mostly off road, very muddy in places. Mostly.

Lot of puddles on the route yesterday, east of Gladhouse quite long deep one. Remains of The snow showed depth that had fallen but really just a line down the middle of the road so no problem, except the puddles.

I went to South Queensferry on Sunday to sample the coffee at Ferry Tasty. The coffee and fruit flapjack was good, the views of the Bridges were very fine. Headed over the hill to Kirkliston into a nasty low sun on wet roads (scary to the extent that I took to the shared use path, not a facility I'd normally bother with).

Once through Newbridge I decided that the weather was too nice to head straight home, so extended by my usual route through Kirknewton and back along the Lang Wang. I even found the glove I dropped in the dark on Tuesday.

“I even found the glove I dropped in the dark on Tuesday.”

Did you know roughly where to look or was it an unexpected bonus?

@chdot I knew where to look - I'd stopped and taken off thinner gloves and put on thicker ones. When I got home, I only had one thinner glove. So I knew where I'd dropped it, and I thought there was a good chance it would still be there.

Did a wee tour of the reservoirs today on the roads, to check the verge Parkers. Shocking.

Roads passable but on way back down from Thriepmuir the long way, cockburnhill road was a little bit sketchy

Finally got onto my backside and took the 3 wheeled recliner out. Meant I could take any route and also cycle onto edges on the very busy paths.
A few cyclists out in the city but didn't see another cyclist until I came back onto the A90 cycleway.

Used the Burnshot route on way out. Very pleased that I had enough speed and traction to make the uphill acute left turn after underpass. Took new route (to me) with extended pavement paths north from Kirkliston and then back up to Elisabeth Yards.

A woman said 'rather you than me'. Assume it was because it's perceived as odd, dangerous, cold, too much work and not much fun.

Lots of 'essential car journeys' being made. People walking the paths staring at their mobile phones. I did use mine to take some images. Some roads totally iced over - trike did skid a couple of times - disc brakes on front wheels only.

@gembo - thank you. Have to head up your direction next time. More vertical rise though which you notice on an 18kg trike.

Got the mountain bike out yesterday evening and did my usual loop through Mortonhall but also went up the Braid Hills - some snow at the top and some ice on the track so I rode down the golf course which was fun (I did keep to the edge and away from tees and greens).
