Rig Road loop around Balerno well gritted today, not so yesterday.

Anyway two bits of ice to watch for , one near the Thriepmuir turn and one near the Buteland turn

Otherwise fine if you get there before the snow that is coming

Is all on metalled road with ashphalt but with the off road feel

In unprecedented move on my second loop a BT Openreach van driver actually waited for me at the sketchy bit of ice on the Buteland turn. Waited a good long time, also he wasn’t to know I knew the ice was there

With home schooling back on I've not been able to get out much but I did get a ride earlier in the month whice I've been meaning to post. This is actually a variation of a route I sketched over a year ago.

I had hoped to find more ice but largely it was just the side road in the south of the City which were still covered. North of the city centre was almost entirely clear, other than a few paths around Granton. I was glad not to find ice on Gloucester street though.

The other novelty thing which I managed during the ride was to pass the childhood homes of at least 4 generations of my family (I'll confess to not knowing which house my Great Grandfather grew up in).

@gembo, I've purposefully left it untitled to see what people make of it.

Any idea which aren't what I was aiming for might go into the boiling pot of future ride ideas.

Blackwoods Edinburgh Review despised the Cockney School of Poetry, particularly Leigh Hunt but also Keats as he rhymed Thorns and Fawns.

Keats though felt he would be remembered long after Lockhart, Wilson and Maginn were forgotten. (Wrong thread but what the heck)

Lunchtime pootle out Lang Whang took 40 mins to top of Auchinoon Brae and then turned and it was 20 mins back and i stopped for motors near the big puddles in the road dips near balerno I know well.

Clydesdale majestically prancing in field of snow, ainville

Six female pheasant flew in front of me no fuss. Daddy of the harem made huge fuss over m6 head. Beautiful plumage tho.

The hills looked amazing in their snow coverings

Pentlands beautiful on return from Tarbrax today. Baltic in the afternoon and slush starting to freeze.

Pentland Rangers Have issued a cease and desist order to skiers and sledgers on the Kips. Principally as the sheep are pissed off and stressed when carrying their lambs and not finding grass and shelter.

As mentioned elsewhere...
Had to get out on the Lang Whang yesterday. Noted XC ski tracks beside A70 as snow still deep.

Met @Dave and family coming back from sledging at Knock hill close to Kirknewton. Road after the quarry was marginal to cycle through.

@laidback, where are those shots Leyden hill?

I went up Buteland today was a little sketchy on the bends and going over the WOL

The A70 is clear as @Greenroofer will vouchsafe.

Lovely ride along the A70 this afternoon, made pleasanter by an easterly wind. My social-media-influenced Galibier jacket did very well in the hail shower on the way out and the snow shower on the way back.

It got me to thinking. I was on my fancy bike which is made of gossamer and thistledown. Its 22 gears work like the mechanism of an expensive watch. It corners like it's on rails, stops like the hand of God has pushed it into the road and climbs like a homesick angel. My Elephant Bike is the opposite of this. Its weight distorts the orbit of the moon, its three gears work, it corners like it's on ice, its brakes have an effect that is observable on geological timescales and it climbs like a homesick demon.

So why is it that my heart-rate on the fancy bike will never go below a level that I can't even reach on the Elephant Bike?

Ability to pull against arms and use more muscles at once? I once tried climbing a steep hill on my old upright sparebike and just couldn't find any way of bracing myself without pulling a wheelie.

Was cycling up to Balerno this arvo and realised that my chain was a bit noisy. It wiped it off on Friday but didn't lube. Luckily @gembo and his pal were back from their rides so I stopped and asked "Can I have some of your fine lube, Gembo?".
Gembo very kindly took my bike and took care of it while I was chatting to his pal about making puff pastry.

Cycled up to Auchinoon brae and back home on a very quiet chain. Thanks @gembo!

Ok well yesterday not today, new bike !! Woohoo ! Got a croix de fer flat bar . Just a wee run around some local places to get a feel for it ! I like . Met a fellow croix de fer rider had a matter he rode his to Hungary , so seem to last well !

Rode out to Aberlady and back on Sunday. Someone said hello to me. I thought it might have been Bill but clearly not. Was a nice day. Bits of ice in the gutter.

@fimm wasn't me this time. But a couple of weeks ago I shouted 'hello' when you were running along Colinton Rd and I was on a bike. I was on the other side of the road so not surprising you didn't notice :)

Almost a week with no lovely rides to report? I'll confess to only having been out on the bike 3 times this year, instead preferring the marginally above freezing garage turbo.

However last night I took the mountain bike out for a play in the snow. Great fun round Cammo and the back of the airport. Deep snow but didn't loose grip too many times. The hard part was never knowing how muddy it was underneath.

Just taken a spin round the deserted streets in the estate. Lovely, highly entertaining and with scant vehicular traffic.

I don't fancy recreationally tangling with the main roads, but the side streets are worth it, if you're not a hurry - barely faster than walking speed due to unspiked tyres, but I can see the attraction of a fat bike on sand!
