They moved Canonmills to Stockbridge? The rotten swines! }:-(

"They moved Canonmills to Stockbridge?"
So they have.
I scanned the photo too quickly - 'thought' it was those shops along from the clock!
Will alter thread title!!

Hehe, thank you!
It is the shops along from the clock, but the Canonmills clock. Perhaps you are thinking of the clock tower at Stockbridge-the one with Pizza Express? I think those flats would be equally hideous in both those locations.

Mixing up Canonmills and Stockbridge is yet more evidence of this forum's notorious Southside bias! :-)
But back on topic, those proposals looks pretty bad. I can't imagine they'd do anything but change the character of the bridge for the worse...

"yet more evidence of this forum's notorious Southside bias!"
Notoriety is in the eye of the beholder.
Can't explain why Stockbridge was in my mind even before I mistook the photo location!
Multitasking on a tiny screen must have been a contributory factor.
I cross the divide at least twice a week (Princes Street). I even lived there for a couple of years. It's quite nice apart from facing north.

GdnEdinburgh: Canonmills Bridge flats plan (http://gu.com/p/2kk4x/tw) on hold as councillors raise concerns and demand site visit. Full report to come

Goodgood. Let's hope no-one draws their attention to the slightly ugly/dowdy Canon Court Apartments, which would be partially concealed by the new thing from some angles.

I prefer that building design to much of the other new stuff built along that stretch of river, but it does seem rather out of place right there.

Ah well, I see the dissenters and local inhabitants are rode over roughshod, yet again. Perhaps some classes in aesthetics would be in order for the councillors! The block of flats are truly hideous! Is there any recourse for the residents of the area to have this decision turned over?

It's an uterrly appaling attempt at "architecture". There seems to be some sort of conspiracy amongst architects operating in Edinburgh that if you cover the thing in sandstone panels (to make it "fit in") then you can get away without the rest of the design process and do nothing other than draw a box with some full-length windows and balconies tacked on in seemingly random positions.
The old Standard Life complex across the road at Tanfield shows what can be achieved by reonvating and incorporating traditional buildings in with a tasteful and sympathetic modern development. It's a mainly sandstone and glass panel affair, but someone actually looks like they put a bit of effort into it.

It is a shame as that is a nice bit of open space. Okay not really open but the single storey biuldings there make it seem that way. A friend of mine said a while ago that he thinks the Council are greatly offended by open space and he seems to be right.

Let's have more of it! Central open, green spaces (to use that cooncil bizzword) are one of Edinburgh's finest and most endearing features

It is a shame as that is a nice bit of open space.
I think that is my main problem with the design (if that's the right word for it).
I can't get too excited about the new block of flats because, as kaputnik suggests, that style is now ten a penny in Edinburgh (21st century's tenements?). However, putting a three/four storey block where there is currently a one storey inoffensive parade of shops and therefore an open aspect will just lead to the Water of Leith and the bridge being enclosed, confined and even more shaded from natural light...

That's absolutely hideous!!!!

Go ahead for impolite block today in the EEN. Leith councillor Marjorie Thomas describes the building as "imaginative" but as PS has already pointed out that style is ten a penny!

City Centre councillor Charles Dundas said: "The height is right, and I would commend the developers for keeping to the existing roof line.
"The materials are right, the mix between retail and residential is right, but I lack the vocabulary to describe why I don't like it.
"I just feel that it jars with the character of Canonmills Bridge, despite its benefits, and just won't fit in well."
Clearly Mr Dundas is being polite and/or ironic.
Perhaps Ms Thomas is, as "Leith councillor" attempting to redress the balance and spoil the area, in keeping with many areas of her constituency. Jealous?

Last year's news, but -
"
THE new head of Edinburgh's main heritage watchdog has started her tenure with an attack on two of the capital's most controversial developments and a declaration: "I love arguments."Marion Williams has taken over the Cockburn Association with a vow to take on critics and mount campaigns against "out of place" developments.

But what is going on now? All the businesses that were in the block were moved out then....another business moved in. Organic/local food shop and cafe that looks very popular.

Wow they even have
dedicatedcycle parking provision. Must admit we passed there last weekend and saw that plastic bovine also.Posted 12 years ago # -
Apparently the new development is being voted on today and will probably go through.
(EDIT-Just found out this story is from 2 years ago. D'oh.)

"The use of stone will preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area."
That's alright then.
"A legal agreement means Glovart Holdings would have to contribute £12,500 towards the City Car Club and £4,500 to public transport improvements."
Peanuts.

And what is the betting they will suddenly run out of money, just when it comes to the point of paying up?

"And what is the betting they will suddenly run out of money, just when it comes to the point of paying up?"
Shouldn't be a problem - CEC has been known to not send a bill for "section 75" money...

Ah, my husband has just been told that story is an old one. From 2010 no less. I didn't notice as it is todays date at the top but he said it has been posted by someone as if it is new.
