Question
Why were Labour on the ballot in Leith (ward) as "Labour and Co-operative" rather than "Scottish Labour"
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

Question
Why were Labour on the ballot in Leith (ward) as "Labour and Co-operative" rather than "Scottish Labour"
Presumably because candidate(s) in that party variation.
Many (MSPs, MPs too) inc (I think) ABurns LHinds JCorbyn.
Often wondered if CP could split/takeover from LP!
"
Green co-convener Patrick Harvie, whose party is seen as a front-runner for a coalition pairing, praised the surge in the Green vote and said a more "balanced" council would give the elected Greens the chance to push for a more radical agenda.
"
Why were Labour on the ballot in Leith (ward) as "Labour and Co-operative" rather than "Scottish Labour"
Because those candidates are also members of the Co-Operative party.
Labour and co-operative have arrangement not to run candidate where Scottish labour standing and vice versa. A rare example of leftists not falling out with each other.
As (yet) another who voted Green 1 on the basis of local (in particular transport) policies (and have just broken a lifetime of principle, inherited from my parents, in telling you), there is NO WAY I will be doing the same in the general election, on the basis of my views on Europe and Independence.
On an unrelated note, someone upthread was talking about having a former UKIPer on their ballot. How did you know?
Alan Gordon Melville — UK Independence Party (UKIP)

MELVILLE, Alan Gordon (Independent)

Sometimes local knowledge, sometimes Google, sometimes they tell you.
In Airdrie we had some former Labour councillors who saw which way the wind was blowing and jumped ship. Rather decently they mentioned this on the flyer. We knew anyway but it was good of them to say so themselves.
EDIT - however I did number them below the official Labour candidates.

Now *that* would be interesting.
Indeed.

“The thing about a PR system is, it is designed to throw up results that lead to co-operation and discussion, that’s what our administration will be all about anyway - we’ve emphasised partnership and co-operation through the city as part of how we will govern.
"
Cycling related news in that article:
---
Talks will take place with the Greens over the next few days, Ms Aitken said, even though Martin Bartos, the leader of the party in the city, was taken to hospital after a bike accident. Ms Aitken said: “Very unfortunately poor Martin was knocked off his bike earlier in the week and quite badly injured. He’s OK, he is bandaged up in hospital with a broken collarbone and broken ribs and all sorts of things. “So we don’t want to put Martin under any more stress than he is already, but equally I’m sure he wants to get going on these things as well, and I’m sure we can find ways to communicate.” She added: “Modern technology can do wonders and Martin has been my colleague for the past five years, we have conversations all the time, this is another conversation, but perhaps on a slightly higher level than the ones we’ve had before.”

And a number of newly elected councillors previously stood for right-wing anti-immigration UKIP before abandoning the sinking ship and joining the Conservatives.

"
Yesterday Conservatives on Edinburgh City Council met with Labour and the Lib Dems to see whether a “Unionist coalition” could take control of the council, which was previously run by a Labour administration propped up by the SNP.

Does Labour really think their few remaining supporters voted for them to see the Tories helped into power? This is beyond insane - if they start forming coalitions with the Tories then they might as well pack it in, as almost no-one would ever vote for them again.
The local election wasn't some proxy independence referendum - pro-union council coalitions are simply madness. It doesn't mean anything, unless the SNP has some plan to declare Edinburgh independent.
Further down the page:
---
The challenge the Tories face if they want to be propped up by Kezia Dugdale’s Labour was illustrated yesterday when the party’s Scottish Executive Committee yesterday said its council groups would only agree to anti-austerity power-sharing deals. All local Labour groups will be required to apply to a working group of the SEC to set out in detail the policy aims of any proposed administration. Labour has long criticised the Conservatives for imposing austerity and has criticised the SNP for passing on “Tory cuts”.

@morngsider, I think east Lothain was a labour Tory coalition before this election?
Not my cup of tea.
I guess the talks were more about underlining t the SNP they don't call all the shots. I guess SNP labour coalition with greens chipping in.? Greens do not like coalitions but what do I know.?
This is interesting (to those interested in such things!)

I've only looked at three wards in Edinburgh so far. 39%, 43% and 45% of Greens giving 2s to SNP. %of SNP giving 2s to Greens higher - 60%+.

It is interesting that the Tories reliably clean up in the 'last rank' votes, with the exception of the ward in which the named UKIPper stood.
Their core vote seems to turn out well for Tory #1 but for everyone else it seems very much 'anyone but Tory'

A Monster Raving Loony candidate (249 first preferences) beat both the Greens (232) and Lib Dems (204) in Glenrothes North. Old school.

Leith Walk had 48% of Green 2nds to SNP, 28% Labour, 10% Independent, 10% nobody and 2% Tory.

While a full breakdown isn’t yet available, it seems like the Rubbish Party candidate gained enough second and third preferences to deny the Conservatives a seat on the council.
...
The party lists its aims on Facebook as “Getting rid of all types of rubbish from our community; wasted resources, litter, dog fouling, fly tipping, and pollution.”
