"Sources have confirmed to BikeBiz that Ikea will be retailing bikes in the UK, with the range expected to go on sale in August.

    ...

Details of which bikes will be sold by the popular retailer here in Blighty have yet to be confirmed, but it seems likely it will be the single 'Sladda' model named by Bike Europe, available in 26-inch or 28-inch versions.

Interestingly, Ikea has priced the bike at €499 (approx £398) or €699 (approx £557) for non-members, indicating that it is not targeting the value end of the market some may have expected. "

<<Insert joke about self-assembly and always having a few random bolts left over at the end here>>.

Here's a (Swedish) page with a photo of the Sladda bike. Looks rather like a post office bike, but in white. And with disc brakes. Mid-market utility / family bike market segment?

Another article here. Looks an interesting bike, with sturdy looking racks that have wooden slat inserts. Also a cargo trailer looks useful.

"The Sladda is fitted with a beltdrive in combination with a SRAM Automatix 2-speed hubgear that switches automatically depending on speed. Breaking is with disc and coaster brake."

Two gears on a load bike, in Edinburgh...

So when you brake the bike breaks? Wow. ;-)

"Two gears on a load bike, in Edinburgh..."

True. But I manage okay with my Pashley Pronto and its SA 3 speed hub. Also manage all but very steep hills on the single speed Kona Paddy Wagon - granted I'm not usually carrying much weight other than myself...

A 3 speed would be more sensible to allow a lower gear below direct drive, a 5 speed would be nice, though I don't think the range on most 5 speed hubs is much greater than 3 speed.

That's irritatingly close to being a good bike. Why put one disc and one coaster brake? Coaster brakes are a pest and you already have to maintain one disc brake so why not two? Great belt drive but why two speeds? One speed's best for simplicity or just put a Nexus on it for Edinburgh's topology.

I can get round Edinburgh on a two speed quite happily. I might prefer the two speed kick back to the automatic.

    @wee folding bike

Then your legs are stronger than mine! I use the whole range of mountain bike gears at some point in my travels - though I will cycle up stuff most people wouldn't....

A two speed IKEA bike in combination with an IKEA trailer full of stuff is going to be interesting in Edinburgh.

I hope the trailer has brakes (breaks?) too, for when you need to stop with 60kgs of flat packs on board.

Cycling amongst the mad traffic in the vicinity of Ikea doesn't sound particularly enticing.

It's alright, the bike lanes on Straiton Rd have been widened from the original 1'6" by approx another 6" to accommodate the Ikea bike trailer laden with flatpacks.

    What?

    What's the problem...?

  14. How easy is it to get to IKEA from the excellent cycle path that goes to Roslin? That gets you under the bypass without any motorised interaction, and onto a shared use path towards town I think.

"How easy is it to get to IKEA from the excellent cycle path that goes to Roslin?"

Under the bypass, bear right by Straiton Pond (check for wildlife), path to Loanhead Road, then navigate various carparks.

Eh, you have to leave the path at the electricity pylon and swim across the muddy field to Edgefield Rd. Otherwise you get stuck in the bike trap.

Don't remember that one, is it 'new'?

    Posted 8 years ago #
  20. @chdot No, what's new is the silly "for bicycle access" sign (haha, good joke). This monstrosity (I mean the chicane, not my bike) is at the west entrance (at Loanhead Rd) to the Straiton Pond path.

Doesn't everyone carry an angle grinder in their bike trailers?

    Posted 8 years ago #
  22. @PS The modern elegant method is to hack GPS maps and wait a few days until a delivery van driver thinks it's a motorway and mows down the chicane.

Re. Stephan's photo, the gate with the "For bicycle access" sign on it was swung open when I went past last weekend.

@Stephan what else does the "for bicycle access" sign say?

  25. "swung open when I went past last weekend"

Oh, wow. I was there last Friday (8 April) and couldn't get through.

  26. @jdanielp There is a report on fixmystreet with a better pic but the site is down at the moment. I think it says something like "push your front wheel through the vertical bars".

Unfortunately my bike (without trailer) still too big, and if you have a basket at the front (or a rack like the IKEA bikes) then you can't do that anyway. And with a trailer there is no way.

  27. The Fixmystreet site is back now. here is the report: https://www.fixmystreet.com/report/524727

@Stephan ah, I see what the intention must be, but that could be pretty tight with a normal bike I'd imagine :(

"swung open when I went past last weekend"

Think that must have been my past experience too.

  30. @jdanielp I have tried, believe me. When I'm on the way to IKEA, then I can detach the trailer and lift trailer and bike over the gate separately. But on the way back after shopping I'd have to unload everything, lift bike and trailer over, then load up again.

Further down there are some steps to Edgefield Road, and next to it an open field. When the weather has been dry, you can push the bike across, but last Friday it looked like this:

Of course off-road motorbikes can easily drive through there, so the chicane doesn't even make sense as a barrier to motorbikes.
