The more I read, the more British Cycling looks in the dark ages. Believe that it is an "if your face fits" place.
Re the big ass comment, I'm sure Cav will have had similar comments. The inability to realise that what is banter and motivating to one can be offensive and bullying to another suggests that Sutton doesn't have the nous to be in such a senior role... All permanent and contract staff, no matter how junior, of the client I work for have training to cover that.
The Nicole Cooke article is in many ways even more damaging, regarding favouritism in opportunities and technology based on gender rather than medal potential. The investment in something as random as the men's road race at the expense of others just seems counter to the control they want over track events.
The Jenny Copnall article is something I know little about and would depend on published goals and terms.
Very hard to know exactly what is going on here. Elite sport is cutthroat and brutal and with results based funding there are always going to be disappointed parties.
Think the only way is to stick to published performance based criteria and not to let emotion get in the way. I think British Cycling have set themselves lofty goals, but feel there are too many inconsistencies in selection/funding for them all to be bombproof.

“The comment that Shane Sutton told me ’to go and have a baby’ is true,” Varnish wrote, releasing her statement in response to Sutton denying the allegations. “I stand by all my statements in the Daily Mail interview and have examples of other comments made to me during my time at British Cycling by Shane Sutton dating back many years.”

the common theme across all 3 pieces is the role of 'discretion' in making decisions. is this true in oher sports?
i can't think of any other government funding that isn't subject to metrics and assessment criteria.

"i can't think of any other government funding that isn't subject to metrics and assessment criteria."
Which isn't necessarily a good thing...

I think that where central funding is awarded, discretion cannot be used for individual events.
For a team event, it is easier to justify along the lines of "A is easier to work with and better to fit in to a team than B whose results are slightly better".
e.g. Lay down Sally" case in Australian Women's rowing.

well, no, but at least they're transparent. still, the anomalous way these things decided - in a context where you'd think metrics could be easily aplied - its not art or taste or anything - is weird.

just when you thought it couldn't get worse...the paracyclists have joined in

I know a fencing champion who was number two in the UK but was not selected for thenolympic team as he was not in a place to join the people he was better than and live as a team., in the small print the selectors are allowed to over rule performance standards,
Don't think banter training will help Sutton.

We should be under no illusions about elite sport and the kinds of people who can drive themselves to be the best in the world at anything, but dear God in heaven you cannot call disabled people 'gimps' and expect to stay in the country let alone your job.

If this turns out to be true then I'll be immediately cancelling my BC membership and letting them know that I don't want to support an organisation that has allowed widespread discrimination and abuse to occur. Shocking.

Michael Hutchinson, consistently the UK's best time-trialist is another cyclist who didn't fit the British Cycling mould.

@earthowned Guess we need to be careful being judge jury and executioner, but it doesn't look good for Sutton...
But if folk cancel BC membership and cancel CTC membership which insurance is left?
With all these organisations, it is best to remember that there is more that unites us than divides us.
The only winners in this will be those who wish cycling ill...Posted 8 years ago # -
It was only likely to end like this:
Shane Sutton: British Cycling chief suspended over discrimination claims

well he's gone- not very surprising
Posted 8 years ago # -
Good that he's gone, at the end of the day it's just work, and nobody should traeted that way at work!
On a sporting level, probably gives BC all sorts of headaches this far through an Olympic cycle...

Edit: see it's already been posted, sorry.

To save you clicking on the DM:
British Cycling descended deeper into crisis on Thursday night after it emerged that one of their leading riders has failed a drugs test.
Sportsmail can reveal that the rider, a road specialist but a former star of the British track team, tested positive in a race in France last month.
The rider, who is known by this newspaper but cannot be named at this stage, was among those contesting a place in the British team for the Olympic road race in Rio de Janeiro this summer.

DM has now updated article to name cyclist as Simon Yates.
