I'm wondering if there was never a TRO passed to introduce the double yellows in the first place. Google streetview from 2009 doesn't show them (but all others do)

    https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@55.943411,-3.2297085,3a,75y,132.63h,74.58t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1snlUTCNqqGY_9PUy-_vWQ9w!2e0!5s20080601T000000!7i13312!8i6656

I'm watching the TRO's reasonably carefully and can't say I've seen one for Russel Road.

Traffic banked up along Russell Road this morning as the parking under the bridge has reduced the lanes to one and a half.

I wasn't sure about this change as the additional parking does slow the traffic quite considerably.

However on stopping to watch the southbound traffic at the blind corner just before the bridge, I noticed that EVERY vehicle cut the corner, exactly where a northbound cyclist turning right to get to the switchback would be.

It was previously bad enough (with a few close shaves) that I already always took the right at Sauchiebank onto the shared path but now the road layout is a blind game of chicken between bikes and cars.

Edit: I have reported it through FixMyStreet and will let you know the response.

I emailed one of my councillors and asked them to let me know the story.

I've never liked that corner, so tend to join pavement before the bridge (when I remember to). sounds like an even more important strategy now.

I don't take the pavement as I've never found the road that bad. On my return commute it would make no sense to right hand turn on to the pavement and then get off it again to left hand turn into Roseburn Street.

However this present set up is the mother of all pinch points, and for the sake of about 8 parked cars is endangering cyclists AND drivers.

@rosie - I think we coming at this from opposite directions. the shared use pavement under the bridge isn't ideal, but is certainly better than being vulnerable on a bad curve, if coming from Dalry Rd.

    reply:

"I can confirm that the double yellow lines being removed on Russell Road were related to a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) put in place to accommodate the tram works in the area. As the works are now complete, and the TTRO has expired, the lines are being removed.

I can advise that the section of double yellow line next to the foot/cycle path entrance (see attached map) will remain in place and should protect the access from parked vehicles."

So no mention of replacement or alternative? Forget them.

Edit - I can't believe that the whole time the Yellow lines were just to stop parking at the corner and not to stop people cutting in too.

Maybe we could get an island put in?

Double yellow lines under the bridges now so no more parked cars clogging up the works. Didn't check whether the entrance to the cycle path has been marked and will try to remember to do this next commuted.

Entrance to the cycle path still has yellow lines (I was there last night). Also the one bit that has had double yellows burnt off and not replaced has a row of those temporary no waiting cones that they put along Gorgie Road when there's a football match on.

Double yellows now on both sides of the road between Sauchiebank and the corner at the zig-zags. So, based on the information up-thread, it looks like the whole TRO process has been circumvented?

Unfortunately the double yellows don't seem to deter drivists from cutting the corner at the zig-zags which makes the right turn from the road onto the path tricky. An island protecting a cycle only right turn refuge would be excellent.

"based on the information up-thread, it looks like the whole TRO process has been circumvented?"

Either that or degrees of misinformation.

I think we should be told!

Amazing how fast things can happen when they're right outside the waste services depot

    Good point!

Interesting to know what the 'process' was.

Anybody like to submit a FOI?

Temporary traffic orders can only be raised for a max of 2 years. The tram works were on for at least 2 years, then followed by Network Rail works when the road was closed again.

The tram folk resurfaced the road so why would they install DYL's if they were no longer required?

I haven't seen a new TTRO, or a new permanent TRO, so somebody somewhere is "fully aware of the facts"

Bizarrely, the double yellows on the zig-zags side, just south of where they are, have been removed again!
That's the worst place for parking as it will encourage even more corner cutting.

Luath, that's the area where the "temporary no waiting cones" I mentioned were. Have they gone again?

I think the cones were put out for the road marking. This involved remarking the area under the bridge with double yellow lines and adding the end-markings to the existing double yellow lines on the zig-zag side.

As previously mentioned, in my opinion, the small amount of additional parking gained at this point means that cyclists turning right to get to the zig-zags are put at risk from the cars cutting the corner to avoid the parked cars.

I still haven't heard back about the fixmystreet report I put in two weeks ago.

Gosh darn it. I had high hopes when I saw the cones out that they were reinstating the lines on the corner - people parking on the corner (and oncoming traffic cutting across it) is getting to me every morning :(

    Who can we complain to?

I just canny understand it. I'm absolutely stumped. This is the only bit that isn't double yellows.

    And here's a TTRO

I heard that parking has been removed at haymarket and outside donaldson's. Maybe russell road has been offered as an alternative. My friend works at haymarket and some of her colleagues drive from corstorphine to donaldson's. Maybe they're on russell road now.

Commute by car from Corstorphine to Haymarket? That's no more than 15 mins on the bus!

    Sheesh!

The signpost at the bottom of the ramp has been knocked sideways again. This time it is over at a funny angle. I have a photo which I'll post if I can get my phone to let me.

What on earth is being driven into it? I'm guessing someone driving something big doing a U-turn, but why would you do a U-turn there?

HGV's that drive along Russell Road from Tesco's end ignoring height restrictions. They reach the low rail bridge and have no space to turn. Ah, nice big pavement, that'll do. Oh, what's that noise?

Seen similar outside Murryfield stadium on Roseburn Street.

As I've mentioned elsewhere there's a couple of industrial estates off Russell Road. The only way to access them by a high sided vehicle is via Macleod Street.

    @fimm, @Fountainbridge

Ask a question on CCE and you'll usually get an answer - probably a good one too!

@fimmm - I saw the tottering signpost this evening and it doesn't look it was knocked by a car. There are no marks on the body! I'd guess it was vandals swinging on it.
