It seems that any "magical" location which has appeared in a Harry Potter franchise, Outlander or Pokemon movie needs not only a car park, but toilets, a visitor centre, plus a network of paths, bridges and viewing platforms. Apparently all in the name of "safety".

"They had to destroy the tourist attraction in order to save it".

In other news, outraged motorists continue to seek to overturn criminal convictions for non-payment of fines for refusing to pay Skye bridge tolls. Keith "Yomper" Brown presumably proud of this lot.

Toll was an "extortionate" £5.70 each way compared to 80p for Forth Road Bridge, goes the justification for non-payment. Aye, but how much was the fare for the ferry it replaced? Silence from the protesting motorists on this question, naturally.

From afar, the problem was consistency. Kylesku and Kessock got 'free' bridges, a toll bigger than those in place at the big southern Firth bridges was always going to cause controversy.

The NAO reckoned in 1997 that "except for one category of lorries, the Skye bridge toll charges are less in real terms than the fares for the former ferry service." I don't think the tolls increased materially after that before they were abolished.

My last few trips to Skye have left me hankering for the days of the ferry & tolls...

One day I will get around to publishing my 'pootlers 300' for D&G. As long as nobody tries to drive it.

Further update from the NC500 corona virus saga. This is from a local campsite over a hundred miles from the nearest ICU bed.

Several people at work already mentioned that they are going to get a tent head up north for their holidays this year.

EDIT: but the same people were also saying at the start of the year that they would cycle in to work when it gets warmer. We shall see.

Campsite owners also repainting signs displaying charges

If they can get up to campsite at Achmelvich in Assynt, they will have the beach, the sea shell shop and the smallest castle in Europe.

    Long way up though

In very slightly related soup news I found recipe for pickled cucumber soup

    Also mustard soup

    And horseradish soup

To add to my fermented bread drink recipe

NB I dont make these things I just like to imagine picking and fermenting things and what that does to the Gut Fauna

Now it happens we have a jar of pickled cucumber on the shelf. Madame loves storing stuff and pickling allows this in spades. Goes really well in a yogurt dip. She has also pickled huge quantities of wild garlic seeds. I have no idea if these are edible or if she even intends them to be eaten.

Beautiful cycle from Ullapool to Achmelvich via the road past Stac Pollaidh. Did it in 2009 and again on my honeymoon in 2016.
In 2009 I slept in a kids playpark in Lochinvar after running out of steam and light having left Ullapool ate in the day, in 2016 we had a lovely ride all the way to Achmelvich and stayed for buttons in the youth hostel. Great memories of day's on the bike through incredible scenery.

Yes, it is a thing.Less common though.

    mustard soup

"To add to my fermented bread drink recipe"

Back when I had reason to create write some fake adverts for imaginary Victorian products I thought that a "fluid loaf" (as a time-saving breakfast product before the days of cereal bars) was a made-up thing, so am disappointed to see it actually exists.

@Wingpig, better than something you thought was real that you later discovered was made up

    Kvass

I love the Kombucha - either it is from 1900 or it is 2000 years old

There is also some sort of fermented yak milk in a bag that gets hung over the door deliberately so that you will bump into it to keep the mix going

Can confirm I did this in a company you might know. The 'Aerojaw' facial prosthetic for cyclists and an automatic chain oiler for bicycles which Scotoiler promptly invented in real life.
