They could build a bypass?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Maybe it should be a local route for local people(?)
Plus visitors on bicycles.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Or make it steeper so motorhomes can’t get up
Will the locals be there with pitchforks!?
They could adopt the road?
Blockade the road etc

Good luck putting the toothpaste back in the tube, unless they've found some way of wiping the internet

MARK BEAUMONT BREAKS RECORD TIME FOR FASTEST RIDE ROUND NC500
Cyclist Mark Beaumont has broken the record for the fastest ride around the North Coast 500 route.
The Scottish long-distance rider set off from Inverness Castle at 8am on Saturday, September 24, crossing the finish line shortly after 12.30pm the following day setting a new record of 28 hours 35 minutes.
The record attempt was filmed by the Global Cycling Network for a GCN+ documentary, which is set to be released by the end of the year.
Beaumont’s time beat the previous record which was set by Robbie Mitchell last year by around half an hour, and is subject to verification from the World Ultra Cycling Association (WUCA).
Mitchell had previously completed the route 29 hours, five minutes and 42 seconds.

A word of warning to visitors to the Highlands. Kylesku Hotel used to have a reputation for good seafood and welcome. Sadly has been bought out by a company trying to franchise the NC500 and now charging extortionate prices for mediocre food. Please don't be ripped off like this.

Ah yes, consumer culture...
You create paid-for "experiences" out of "a good thing" that used to be free and available to all. Then the place is overrun by the Instagram-generation trying to get their quick-hit and the companies involved get complacent and lazy. Then "good thing" is ruined... Those in the know go off and find "new good thing"... Rinse and repeat

I guess the hotel's new owners aren't aiming at the "lowly bicycle tourer with long socks and ancient panniers" demographic and rather those in the "three axle Winnebago* and accessory NC500 supercar" bracket.
* I jest, of course. Winnebago doesn't make a three-axle RV.

I suspect that any self-respecting cycle tourers fled from the NC500 a long time ago due to the unpleasantness and danger created by said Winnebagos and their occupants.
Cycle tourers are now off to find the "new good thing" (if anywhere still exists that isn't overrun by plagues of motors?)

Despite welcoming the increase in visitors undertaking the route, Police Scotland said it is "saddened" to see an increase in complaints of poor driving and speeding along the route.

In 2017, writer and broadcaster Cameron McNeish questioned the promotion of the route, given that the Scottish Government had adopted strong positions on climate change and renewable energy.
In more recent years, there have been increasing concerns about the environmental impact of high-volume traffic, drivers speeding or convoys of campervans moving too slowly as well as damaged roads, dirty camping and strained infrastructure.

"It's simple things like bursting a tyre. It seems that cars don't come with wheels and if they do [the drivers] don't know how to fit them."
He hopes Highland Council will push ahead with plans for a visitor tax to fund improvements to the roads.
"That's certainly the hope that it will be used and won't go into a central pot to be used in Edinburgh."
