Just wondered if anyone could give their views on the Bikmate front and rear light set available just now for £4.99?

Looks cheap and cheerful? More stock that they have cree lights on, and in the 'about' section have a review for what look like the moon lights we got at the EBC NY sale? Can't see those on the 'offers' page though.

Looks a decent winter range.

ooooft. Just told myself to stop buying kit. BUt an ALdi sale is different.

@gembo. Too true. can never have too many buffs / lights /merino items...

@paddyirish, my thoughts exactly. I bought five of those nailclipper things (not cycling related) and pretty much can now find a pair if I need them. Same with scissors. I estimate twenty pairs though for scissors before you can be guaranteed a pair, more like 8 with nailclippers [estimates based on famuily of 5]
also the williams bros beer is 20p a bottle cheaper in Aldi than elsewhere. Only downside is the poor wee chinese children that make the stuff. And rumour that certain merino product from china are infact rat.

I thought my virtual shopping basket was private; how come everyone can see it?

Yes my garmin loving buddies are keen on this deal but I am keen on some cheap USB lights and maybe some merino

I wouldn't recommend the 810. I had no end of problems with mine.

Me too Amir. Switched itself off at roundabouts. Had to send it back for a refund.

The fancier COB lights (£13) looks suspiciously like moon nebula on road.cc at£40!
Only difference I can see is a smaller capacity batter on the Aldi version so could be a great backup/leave-on-the-bike option.Posted 8 years ago # -
In one of life's little ironies I purchased my merino base layer red and black (possibly silkier feel than last years all black version, moon copy front light (good copy), winter gloves with fingers not lobsters and obligatory pair of their excellent non-merino socks and at the checkout the staff member was none other than the daughter of the picture framer at Roseburn. We had another civil discussion.

Sent Mrs S in to try to secure me a the moon copies front and rear. The batteries are starting to fade in my older lamps so time to move with the times.

Just bought the COB rear lamp. The battery capacity on the packet is quoted as 800mAh (whereas Aldi quote 500mAh on their page).
Looks good at first glance. Full power too bright. Lowest setting OK. Comes with an under-saddle bracket, clip bracket and rubber strap bracket.
So maybe the same as the Moon (Chinese copy?)

I bought the moon rip-offs too, but on-line last week.
will be interesting to see how they compare to our real Moon ones bought on sale at EBC last year (before yet another resolution not to shop there....)

Got the COB rearlamp and it is seriously bright. Serious question. Is a strobe setting ever a good idea?
Merino skullcap fantastic (can compress it inside my fist) and the cappy one good as well- they actually fit my big heid... Leg warmers, gloves, buff and merino socks still to be tried.

What is the bike parking like at Liberton Aldi? Secure? Stands? I'm thinking of going down after work on my way out of town as its on my way to my destination.

Grand - there's a half dozen or so Sheffield loops, just past the entrance, in between the store and the road.

Great, hopefully the sea guls won't have swooped and taken away everything before 6:30 pm this evening.

Maybe worth mentioning that Porty Aldi is reportedly (in-laws claim to have tried to go to it at the weekend) currently gutted, awaiting a refit, in case anyone was planning on heading to it.

The fake moon look good I would like decent rear light, but as I live out of town cant really see the point in buying the front one as 50 lums would do nothing use a 300 on front. Any one bought the Aluminium Red Rear Bike Lights what is this light a copy off?

Some think the strobe communicates cyclist (just as pedal reflectors do). They also are more battery efficient, being off quite a bit... Possibly they may catch the eye or capture attention more.
However, they are off periodically and thus might be off when a driver glances your way (see also saccadic masking). I suspect they may be harder to localise, that is, it may be harder to judge distance and velocity (speed+direction) of a flashing light compared to a solid light. One might argue that this will make drivers take more time to work out where you are, which is probably true for conscientious drivers, but the ones that are scary are those that couldn't be arsed, so making it harder for them might not be a good idea.
I've stuck with solid lights as a consequence, even after they were legalised.

Some Knog lights have a "pulse" option that varies the brightness without ever going completely off, which could help with potential problems that Roibeard mentions. The rear Knog Road light I've got has four LEDs which can pulse in sequence with two of them on at any time. I've had loads of people stop me and ask what type it is as it is so noticeable, but not blinding.
Posted 8 years ago # -
I usually run two lights front and rear in the winter, one on flash and one on steady, for the reasons Roibeard gives and to have a backup if one fails.
If I only have one light (in summer) I run it on flash.Posted 8 years ago # -
@fimm, I do the same. Just to be clear I do use flash settings with varying pulses on 1 light, but when I say strobe I mean headache inducing very high frequency light that would harm anyone who looked at it for any length of time. Anyone who buys the COB light will see the setting I mean...

I bought Aluminium cob rear light waterproof socks and merino top in Aldi in Livingston, what I wanted was a high VIS extra large jacket but already sold out, anyone seen any extra large hi viz jackets?
Posted 8 years ago # -
@paddyirish - oh yes, I saw the setting. And tried to switch it off as quickly as possible.
Needless to say I won't be using it [the strobe setting]
Thankfully, the light comes on in the lowest power continuous mode by default
