It really is a noxious odour. We have a car garage and builder's yard behind us, and I was convinced it was one of those responsible. As the chap in the article says, it really does smell like burning rubber.

I've noticed a faint burning rubber smell around Leith Links quite a few times over the last few weeks. I assumed they were up to something in the industrial yards on the other side of Seafield Road.

I've never noticed it when passing the plant itself, but maybe I became accustomed to it by the time I got there.

I had assumed it was something my neighbour was smoking or the aftermath of a freshly-roasted scooter on the bike path, so it was useful to have its source identified. I've never noticed it on Leith Links, whereas smoke from a bonfire at the allotments beside St Mary's can sometimes be trapped in a Links-spanning layer for hours at a time.

I was past this week and it certainly struck me as much more toxic than the usual run of the mill poo pong

Thankfully my only interaction is trips to and from Porty

Noticed distinctive burning rubber smell around Lochend Park the past few weeks. Again I assumed it was the remains of a burnt out scooter or builders disposing of waste in a non-regulation manner.

environmental watchdog has confirmed a new “burning rubber” smell plaguing residents in Leith is coming from Seafield sewage works.

And now campaigners are calling for an odour abatement order to be slapped on the plant.

So if I read the article correctly, the plant is operated by Veolia for Scottish Water, and it's SEPA that have licensed it to operate at night. Still, why not blame the council?

"Still, why not blame the council?"

    Good question.

Suspect 'problem' is that council has been involved trying to get a solution for local (and wider) residents.

The fact that it has no direct powers is of course -

    the council's fault...

RESIDENTS have hit out at council chiefs for failing to take enforcement action over Seafield sewage works after a persistent smell blighted the area for three weeks.

And politicians have joined locals in calling for new investment in the plant in a bid to prevent similar problems in future.

It has been pretty pony these past few weeks. Experienced it while pedalling to Porty and back via Seafield path. Even noticed the smell as far south as Albion Road and Easter Road one day when the north easterlies were blowing in.

I have been up to Seafield Road a couple of times in the past week to hire a c*r and it has been really honking. Felt really sorry for the staff.

  17. The one thing I've noticed about the Seafield sewage honk is that no matter how boak-inducingly thick & cloying it is, it doesn't stop people sitting outside McDonalds and eating their McSlops in the putrid air....

To be fair, it is unlikely to make the flavour any worse. it may even improve it.

Last night about 2am I was woken up by the burnt rubber smell which I believe is caused by the filter regeneration process at Seafield. That's the filter system intended to remove the stench. Really foul odour. I suspect that they only run it when the wind is from the south east to avoid complaints but probably had an upset and were forced to run it with the wind headed onshore and over the populated areas.

If anyone is looking to add to the pile of complaints then the appropriate details are found here:

Smell of burning rubber reached as far as top of Easter Road this afternoon. Right through the house too as windows wide open in the warm weather. I honestly thought it must have been a fire somewhere nearby.

As someone fortunate to have never lived close to it*, I can only sympathise with you guys.

Seriously, this is 2017, not 1907. How is this even legal?

    * Not that Crowdriver lives close to it.

Quite unusual for the aroma to reach this far south. Can only remember a couple of occasions in 20 years. Wind has veered around to a north easterly so that explains it.

I made a complaint to SEPA and the response indicates that there was an Enforcement Notice issued by SEPA in December 2016 which required the site to implement abatement measures on the filter regeneration cycle emissions. Currently a new "vent air burner" is being installed and will be up and running by the end of July. So we will be back to the plain old sewage stench at that point.

Residents campaigning against the notorious Seafield stench have hailed advice by a legal expert which they say means their complaints about the sewage works have been mishandled for decades.
