Canal boat cafe at the leamington lift bridge has had cool makeover. Opens 7.30.a.m.

Not many seats inside yet however on a sunny day you can sit on the pile of sleepers at the lift bridge.

If next PY is sunny it might be worth a try. £2.20 dearest beverage.80p dearest snack.

I was talking to the owner / operator (they have some police boxes too) as he was chilling on the sleepers after hard day about 7.30pm last night on my way home from a poor Marxism and imperialism lecture from prof Nancy fraser

  2. Ah cool. I suspect it's the owner of the police boes of which one was near my old office. He was a chef in a previous life, and he and his wife/girlfriend had, at that point, only just bought the boat as a kitchen for producing tasty treats for the boxes. Clearly decided to expand!

And at a 7.30 opening time, I can make that in the mornings!

The are the same couple who run "The Counter" police boxes, of which I know of 2 (by the Usher Hall, and M&S in Morningside) though I think they have 3 4 in total. Very nice couple, I've spoken to both skinny bespectacled husband about running the Edinburgh Marathon and lovely red headed wife who gave child number 1 a free babychino.

I would highly recommend the double espresso, though I've failed to find a bad product yet.

  4. Yep, that's the folk I know (and you're right, they're both lovely).

The salted caramel cookies wrenched me away from my GF life every time...

Sounds nice, and I'd turn up for a PY as about 100 yards from my work.

Will be on holiday for the next one.

I wouldn't turn up here for PY as I'd be in the wrong place, but it looks like a great place for a cycling coffee social occasion...

I stopped for a coffee and breakfast oaty bar all under £3 I was impressed. Sat in deckchair until a passing friend stopped and after realising we worked close to each other walked in.

I agree @algo make a PY go there in the sun. I could make that no problem....

Clearly can't figure out how to make fit the picture from failbook

Given it's a small place if we were to shift a PY event there I think it would be corteous to let them know in advance (Without over-inflating the potential custom levels we are bringing). Zazou used to appreciate forewarning anyway.

Alas Zazou is long gone. But yeah @kaputnik good shout on the fore-warning and they would like it looking busy, as I said I was taking photo for facebook share/promotion they were much chuffed.

How many deck chairs have they got?

Do they have a "big table"?

looked like 2 deck chairs and two small ish tables. Nothing to stop us turning up with our own furniture. I can carry a camping chair and a few camping stools. Flashmob coffee drinkers on the canal...
Bonus of camping chair is it has a cup holder... no table needed

That said one of the guys did mention they need to jump through hoops for council to approve selling of bacon rolls so they probably have the problem of space they are allowed to use to not cause a "pinch point" busy corner that as I know well enough as I have to slow down a lot for dog walkers and peds that walk 5 abreast filling the entire damn path or let their dogs roam freely... (today's rubbish walking thread?) so if we turn up with our own kit either
    1. the council can't complain as the guys didn't provide it
    2. the council complain that they attracted us to the space...

Zazoo was not allowed to have people carry coffee over the path to the picnic bench... So why did the Lobster shack get to have people carry stuff across a much busier George Street pavement? #oneruleforthem...

I will be passing by there again in approx 20 min, if they are still open I can stop and ask them

Saw the Zazou man sailing the Avalon barge tonight.

Zazou boat has gone to Liverpool.

I can bring a seat. Will only really work for us if we are outside in nice weather. Or we do book his two tables say from 7.30-8.30?

Zazou-man once told off Mrs Snowy for calling Zazou a barge.
    "Barges carry coal!"

The counter boat is actually the same one that used to sell bacon butties from that spot. It has had a sympathetic makeover but smaller than the Zazou one.

makeover complete refurb they removed all the wood enclosure, sadly they were not open last night to ask and I did not come past that way this morning. what day/time suits most folk? Doodle poll?
Yes Steve was upset by calling zazou a barge as it is a narrowboat.

Shuts at 3.30 normally, first day he went with the rush of the new.

Friday 24th June 7.30 a.m. Is the PY date if weather dry can we switch to the boat?

Just enjoying a hot chocolate and a brunch bar at one of the tables. I might enquire about bicycle groups as I'm heading off...

Oh, just to correct gembo's report, the most expensive drink is hot chocolate at £2.40 (large) which is hardly unreasonable.

They sounded enthusiastic with caveats of not enough seating/not blocking the path.

yep I popped past on Friday and said we would like to descend on them and they said no problem they will stick it in the calendar. If we park all the bikes along the wall we should be OK if we don't sit any more than 2 wide along the waters edge

I'd happily sit on the quayside dangling my feet over the edge.

This idea of a Continental Cafe Culture in Edinburgh will never ever work.

@spytfyre there was recognition when I mentioned that I was asking with regards a cycling group, although they seemed to have an incorrect date in mind. They also said that they are open from 7:30 although it didn't look very open when I cycled past at 08:45 today. Having said that, I don't suppose that tables and chairs are usually needed quite that early on. Let's hope for a warm and sunny day!

@jdanielp pretty sure I said 24th... but yes they were not open when I passed around the 8:55 mark...

@spytfyre 28th was suggested when I initially brought it up but they may just be misremembering - I don't think I saw them actually consulting a calendar. I said 24th too.
