Cycling in Austria

Just back form a holiday in Austria and though I only rode twice, thought it was wonderful for cycling.

Stayed in Alpbach- off the Inn Valley and there was an amazing variety of suggested rides for all terrain preferences and all levels. It was similar in the neighbouring Zillertal.

Two major routes that I cycled a bit on the Inntalweg runs along the Inn valley from Switzerland through to where it exits Austria near Kufstein, (~200km) but the bits I saw were great. Seems to have been used more by locals.

The Zillertalweg was 20 miles of very slight incline from the Inn Valley up to Mayrhofen- all 4m wide, tarmaced with virtually no inimperfections, never mind potholes and car free. Rode up the road to Hintertux which was a steep climb, but was always given room by all drivers, who thought nothing of waiting behind me and never a horn or close pass at all.

The only disappointment was that we weren't able to find bikes to hire which had a way to accommodate my 3yo (e.g. trailer/seat/tagalong), which meant we couldn't do a family ride. Was also tricky to find anything my 7yo could have used- we found one place right at the end of our stay which was by then too late.

Similarly in Vienna, excellent wide cycle lanes and a velib type bike hire scheme which I used- very simple- 1 euro to register, 1st hour free and 1 euro per hour after that. Excellent map of the greater Vienna area provided (much better than the standard City one) available in Tourist Offices. It includes locations of bike hire on the city hire scheme ( and competitors) bike repair stations and drinking fountains. Bike lanes were wide, well signed (including directions to nearest repair station) and pretty well used.

Highly recommended for a cycling holiday or even a couple of days as part of a wider trip.
