I think I heard him say "£22 million pounds in funding", which sounds like full funding for all of them

    Astonishing. Most pleased about this project;

As someone with form for going around being cynical about the ScotGov active travel splurge it is only right that I am extremely pleased to admit I was wrong.

This feels like it could be a game changer for Scotland. Need to ensure that these schemes are delivered and most importantly delivered well. No half-measures and compromises.

I should hold my manhood cheap if I don't enter the breach on the Meadows-George Street thing. I've only cycled that several thousand times.

What does worry me is the approach of funding projects and then seeking community buy-in later. I'm anticipating community councils across the land complaining about lack of consultation, waste of money, etc with years of objections, obstruction and challenges grinding these plans in to the ground.

I saw a quote today attributed to Samuel Johnson:

"Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome."

Let's remind all councillors of this at every opportunity.

I'm stunned and delighted all 5 are getting funding. As a big fearty that'd not consider joining the traffic there, safe passage from the Meadows to George Street will make all the difference to me.

Perhaps ScotGOV has realised that 10% of all journeys by bike is an utter fantasy unless the cash is available to fund quality infrastructure projects...

That just means you haven't suspended your natural disbelief like some of us. I'd say that to reflect in sober fashion on city centre cycling is to decline to take part in it at present. You have to enter video game mode to cycle from the Meadows in.

"Need to ensure that these schemes are delivered and most importantly delivered well."

And faster than CEC's default speed.

"I'm anticipating community councils across the land complaining about lack of consultation, waste of money, etc with years of objections, obstruction and challenges grinding these plans in to the ground"

    Yes, but.

Some CCs are actually quite reasonable and others improving due to people engaging with them and putting different points of view...

I think HY has got the message, and NS agrees.

I assume (hope) this won't start becoming party political with anyone objecting - though asking for commitment on future spending levels should be encouraged.

My suspicion is that Ms Sturgeon 'gets it' through her concern for children and has duly instructed Mr Yusaf who may be on the cusp of getting it, but hasn't yet got it.

But the grounds for cautious optimism are there. Focus on the children and not even UKIP can object.

No idea of the internal politics, but I'd put good money on David Miller, the former transport journalist, now Special Advisor to NS, having played a significant role here.

Awesome news. I'm sure thousands of hours campaigning must have played a part too.

Perhaps they were listening when we pinned it how few metres of the A9 dualling funding the losers would have cost last year.

The BBC article has illustrations of what these schemes could look like.

Yes. Yes please. Yes please as soon as possible. Thank you.

    Also from that BBC article:

Each project is expected to begin development within the next two months.

    "

Two schemes in Edinburgh - including a "Meadows to George Street" project which improve the route for pedestrians and cyclists - are forecast for completion by summer 2022.

    "

Is that how long cheap road schemes take?

No - it's how long massive estuarial bridges take to build.

Ah yes, I knew there was something slightly complex that took 5 years (though presumably some time in the planning as well).

On reflection I think this is PoP's doing. My point before about having to create interest before you can engage in specifics - that's what PoP has done. By turning up in our thousands year after year they've turned to us now that they're a bit short of ideas.

    Well done to the PoPulists.

chdot - yes, planning and authorising the Queensferry Crossing also took the best part of five years - but to fair, that was a bit more complex than getting a TRO and moving some kerbs.
