Lower Gilmore Place open yesterday,if a bit bumpy due to resurfacing.

Muddy verge wierd, we stood at it to feed swans/ducks yesterday and, what with us on one side and our bikes on the other, space was at a premium.

Son asked me why we need to use/cross such busy roads to get from meadows to canal. The wisdom of an 11yo.

Apologies - hadn't realised there was a sizable mud strip between the tarmac and the wall.

That's the towpath closed again without any obvious warning.

When boats are moored at the new "hard-edge moorings", it means there will be even more opportunities for conflict on this narrow & congested section.

    Joy.

The path will presumably end up a bit wider, assuming that they don't install street furniture on the new plaza area?

I wonder which Boroughmuir kid will having the honour of being the first in the canal? Having an open quayside right next to a school entrance - what could go wrong?

they will need to keep generating a current or Weil's disease will be a threat

The detour is a whole lot less stressful now with the 20 mph limit.

There's a tall metal fence separating the playground from the path.

Path also being widened according to plans, but assumes canals and developers can work together (which I doubt)

Very heavy police presence on Gibson Terrace this morning with at least five officers along the length of the road.

Same again tonight with the paving at the top where you come off the canal all taped off

That would explain the big police van ("Police Command Centre" or something) parked on the pavement by the Dundee Street Sainsburys.
(I'm still tempted to put it in the rubbish parking thread...)

Edited to add photo of said van on the BBC:

    Curious -

    "

“After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, they were liberated from custody pending further inquiries and did not appear in court.”

Apparently, the towpath at Viewforth is likely to be closed until mid-June.

Which is quite a bit longer than the 5 weeks 'planned*' at the beginning of March

*'Planned' as in stated on a sign the evening before closure - hardly good PR.

@edd1e_h where did you hear that? It certainly looks like they aren't progressing very quickly so I'm not surprised it's going to take longer than five weeks, but mid-June?!

Diversion at fountainbridge closed tonight when I passed. Blocked by a big crane and other lorries. No other signed diversion for pedestrians. Lots of cars doing u-turns and cyclists and peds looking very lost.

Yep. Cycled the length from Slateford to the lift bridge at lunchtime. Viewforth section not properly surfaced yet, but definitely open.

Ten weeks' work commencing on towpath from 4 April: https://www.scottishcanals.co.uk/news/works-at-boroughmuir-union-canal/

Puts a bit of a dent in our CorstorBurn feeder ride to PoP...
