TL/DR: The council created a "consultation", which will be treated by a hostile media as a referendum, and by lacklustre councillors as a veto...

There are many, many national and local policies prioritising walking, cycling, and local living - which have been the subject of extensive consultation. Given this, any area specific consultation should focus on finessing the detail of the design. There should be no further discussion about the principle of the proposals.

I am hopeful that given the opposition skews heavily towards driving there is at least an opening for the council to say

"Well, of course the drivers don't like it. That's the whole point"

Of course, the council may also gimp the scheme in an attempt to throw the drivists a bone. Or the new transport convenor could behave like the old one...

Anyway, I will try and encourage my councillors to get behind the scheme as and when. I await the AI clickbait summary of the proposals from the Evening Chipwrapper

    Exactly.

And nowhere in the consultation should there be the words "do you support or oppose the scheme?"

Overview We have commissioned Stantec to carry out a study into active travel and sustainable transport improvements on the A7 corridor between Sheriffhall Park and Ride and Main Street in Newtongrange.

The aim of the project is to improve active travel connections within the study area making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle for their everyday journeys and to connect to public transport services more easily. Currently, there is no or limited provision for walking, wheeling and cycling along the majority of the A7 corridor.

    Closes today

There is a consultation for Princes Street and Waverley Valley, if anyone has time (closes today).

There is a question about adding segregated cycle lanes along Princes Street, either in part or for the whole length. It is a bit disingenuous because it portrays the only way is to take space away from pedestrians. They could quite easily remove the eastbound car lane and redirect buses and taxis heading eastbound, or better still make Princes St tram, cycles and pedestrians only. I've left a comment saying this, it may influence the discussion in the Council committee if enough of us leave comments to this effect.

The rest of the proposals are actually good but I would like to see more pushback on this kind of nonsense from Council officers.
