    @ Rosie

"This was a thesis of The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida - written in 2002 so should have hit the medium sized company & council officials by now."

    Have you read it?

I haven't, but I wonder how accurate this review is.

    "

--It's written from an unbelievably myopic, elite perspective. Much like Thomas Friedman, Florida seems utterly incapable of seeing the world beyond the veil of privilege that protects him and his fellow business gurus from the real world.

--Everything is bolstered by spurious quantitative methods without any real qualitative perspective, and even then, the quantitative research seems contradictory, unreliable, and insufficient.

I also wonder if Mark Carney has read it (or similar). He has started talking about the "Artisinal Economy".

I suppose Shoreditch is not so far from Threadneedle Street...

@chdot - I read some long articles derived from it.

It isn't so much artists in Edinburgh (like New York the city is losing its cheap places to rent) as high tech workers - which the local universities are turning out in droves.

Not just 'artists'' or Edinburgh (or Shoreditch), but there is a mismatch between skills/qualifications and future jobs/work.

No idea if Carney has actually thought much about an 'artisinal future'. He was raising the issue of 'rising wealth gap, particularly in the UK' but didn't seem to have any convincing/'political acceptable' answers.

It's kind of depressing that the answer to everything is "tourism".

    Think "everything" is overstating things!

Plenty scope for more cycle tourism in Scotland, needs some more links to the better bits of infrastructure/quiet roads (and more capacity/helpfulness from ScorRail).
