Looks like Police Scotland are on board!

Hope it is a success here too.

    Cheers

Chdot, has this come about through the political side, or do you think it is the result of WM police pushing out a good news story to other forces?

I imagine they'll be looking for suggestions of particular black spots. Shall we start a list here?

    @ Nelly

I don't know how much WMP was encouraging other forces to do the same. I would assume that various forces contacted them after all the positive publicity. This may well have included PS and EP.

I made Michael Matheson aware of the WMP initiative at his Skelf photocall. The Twitter exchange was a follow-up. I have had no contact since.

I assume someone said something to someone in PS. I also assume PS was aware of the WMP initiative.

I do not know if the (apparent) 'Minister's interest' spurred them to action or endorsed what they had already decided.

PS and EP visited WMP soon after (WMP said so on Twitter).

This is good news. It is particularly good news that it is being piloted in Edinburgh.

It will be interesting to see how it works in practice (and where it will be done).

Would perhaps be good if they did some ASL enforcement too.

    Good idea.

I assume they will be looking at various places where traffic is relatively fast, but 'we' also have concerns about pinch points.

Dundee Street. Top of the Approach Road then do them for speeding as they come down the slip road.

    Great news.

Anywhere uphill with traffic islands would be a good place to start, especially those with 40mph limits. Maybury Road for starters.

We’ve been busy, we’ve been very busy, what started as a conversation between two traffic officers and one member of the Birmingham Cycle Revolution Team over a cup of tea and some chocolate bunnies (yes it was Easter !!), followed by a few hastily drawn sketches 20 minutes later of an educational road mat, Operation Closepass #GiveSpaceBeSafe has now become a huge thing, a huge work generating quite awkward thing. Awkward you may ask, why awkward? Well it was rather well received, all of sudden we were receiving praise and some might say being “liked” which is rather discomforting for traffic officers, as we are somewhat conditioned to being disliked and receiving negative feedback. After all we are not the smiley happy branch of the modern police force, we are the spreaders of misery and gloom generally among the road going populace, the dour faced donut eating aviator wearing, Road Traffic Act preachers of doom. So the positive feedback and support for our first tender new steps in a new direction have left us standing around, blushing slightly with our hands behind our backs whispering things like “well this is all a little unnecessary, we’re only doing what we are paid to do”. Overnight what the officers involved did on a daily basis changed dramatically, there have been no rest days since the start of September, the phones have rung every day, whether it’s our press department, journalists, editors of TV shows or just the interested public the demand has been off the scale.

Good to see Hampshire on the list of forces this will be rolled out to:

All of this becomes particularly interesting when one starts looking at some other forces.

    Such as Hampshire.

    OUTDATED POLICING

West Midlands’ approach to the dangers faced by those on pedal cycles could scarcely be more different to that of Hampshire. While WMP are spending a few hours every so often enforcing safe passing and explaining why people ride bikes in a certain way and so on, Hampshire Police are out collaring the people on bikes.

Recently they staged three such operations, stopping 480 cyclists. Of these, 34 were dealt with for failing to display lights, which rather implies that the remaining 446 were cycling perfectly legally. A reminder: Operation Close Pass only stops drivers who have committed an offence, it doesn’t stop 13 law-abiding road users for each offending one.

Meanwhile, East of Scotland Police today announced they will pilot their own close pass initiative in Edinburgh in the spring.

Chief Inspector Stephen Innes, Local Area Commander for Road Policing in the East of Scotland, said: "The safety of all road users, including cyclists who we recognise as a vulnerable group, is a priority for Police Scotland and we regularly run operations and initiatives to reduce casualties and educate all drivers, riders and pedestrians.

“We will in the spring be launching a new initiative focusing on the close passing of cyclists and are working with partners to pilot the scheme in Scotland's capital city."

Big leverage was House of Lords presentation through Lord Berkeley and Dr Bob Davies spreading this through All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group around Lords & MP's - who then ask PCC's .....

Already getting spin-off of some Police looking into why people are cycling on some footways

In the positive sense? I.e. "Why are they cycling here instead of the road, and how can we make the road safe enough for people to cycle there"?

    @Frenchy:

Yes, saw a tweet from a police officer in London along the lines of "reports of pavement cyclists on X St; will speak to road engineers to discuss reasons for this & how we can make it safer for cyclists"

Note that drivers may legitimately stop in an ASL under some circumstances (for example if they can't stop safely at the first line, or (I think) if they are in slow moving traffic). So static photos are no use unless we know that the driver could have stopped safely at the first line (and yes I know that a lot of the time they could).

Police Scotland were doing this in Edinburgh in the summer, I doubt very much if it led to any prosecutions though.

Here's hoping it goes better then their promise of ASL enforcement which still stands at zero last I heard.

My bugbear is stopping in cycle lanes. I note that cars are only allowed to stop there if "absolutely necessary" (cycle lanes with broken white lines). Visiting the ATM or buying a pint of milk from Tesco's in Fountainbridge is not "absolutely necessary".
