Loch Leven roads can see some bad driving- I normally try to get them covered early on in my ride. Lots of lovely wee roads e.g. around the back way from Balgedie to Strathmiglo and on to Falkland. Even the loch-side path is rideable if you are not on a road bike.

The A92 is dualled, but you would remember if you'd been cycling on that!

Can you remember the specific roads which were uncomfortably fast? Fife's an area I'd like to do more cycling on in the future.

Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly? Would you recommend them to an unfamiliar rider???

Remember riding past Cowdenbeath High school at lunchtime- there must have been half a dozen Police Officers on duty...

Sustrans Route 1 is pretty good way to get out to St Andrews from the Bridge - you could get a train back from Leuchars.

There are a number of good routes 76 as well.

Either way, you may want to cut some corners on the paths by staying on the road, but they form a good starter for 10.

"Useful rule of thumb, or always true?"

Generally, unless: the footway is shared use; the footpath has signs which explicitly forbid cycling (very rare).

When is a footpath not a footpath?
When it's a road with all vehicle banned. IIRC Hankchief discovered that is the case for the "footpaths" which criss-cross East Craigs. Although I have never seen anyone complain about considerate cycling there.
