Glasgow POP - Feeder ride from Edinburgh

    Right folks...

    POP Glasgow need our help and a supply of marshalls for their inaugural ride to satisfy the requirements of Glasgow Council. The more marshalls we can provide the more people can attend PoP Glasgow.

    So to help any would-be marshalls to get there I will coordinate a feeder ride from Edinburgh on the Sunday morning.

    Meet 8.30am at Cramond Brig (the old bridge) for a medium paced ride via Linlithgow, Avonbridge & Airdrie.

    Pace as per the slowest rider with enough time for steady ride and hopefully lunch before the 1pm departure from Glasgow Green.

    Return journey by train or reversing the route.

    All welcome, but bear in mind we will be without any support vehicles so please ensure your bike is in good order and have an bail out option if required.

    What sort of distance/average speed is that? It's a mad idea that I could do this on my Brompton without holding everyone up, but I'm toying with it all the same. As a POP organiser I *never* get to go on a feeder ride :-(

    From Cramond Brig it is 50miles, so I was thinking of 14mph to get us there in time to have some lunch first, but if we are a bit slower then the lunch break gets squeezed.

    There are a few hills by Avonbridge but nothing too dramatic.

    Ah, too quick for me, realistically. Might* manage it on the big bike but not the Brompton

    Sally - What sort of speed did you have in mind?

    The full route plot comes in at 43miles** from the Brig so we could be more relaxed speed wise if the demand was there.

    ** this assume we can still get round the Baillieston Junction on the pavement. Local knowledge will be required for the Glasgow bit.

    Nah, it was a mad idea anyway. I've never done more than about 10 miles on the Brompton at a go and I don't think it's ideally set up for long rides. I'd hate to keep everyone else from their lunch. One day!

    Do not quote me but the claim is that the M8 will be finished a week early on 23rd April. If my mum was not visiting I would come with you.

    They maybe mean for the next day?

    Quite hard I have found getting info on those roadworks as we often go that way to avoid travel sickness when heading for Tebay services which we go to regardless of where we are actually going on holiday.

    I am guessing magnetom or darkerside will be better placed? There were delays at junction six of the M74 yesterday.

    If there is ever an east wind I will resurrect the trip to Ayr on the A70 it is very good to get out of the Edinburgh bubble. Former industrial rural poor much in evidence along the A70 ( as indeed in north wales last week during the holidays)

    Don't be too alarmed by the mileage. Think of it as the Pedal for Scotland route but in reverse. Plenty of people do that with much training.

    And from Caldercruix (half way) we'll be near to the railway line with plenty of bail out options, but it's all downhill from there...

    Eastbound A89 at Baillieston is open. Traffic from the M8 is diverted onto it briefly but there are three lanes there and it's not an issue.

    West bound about 200m of the A89 is shut from the mini roundabout with the A752 to the big new one where the A8 joins the A89. This is so the A89 traffic doesn't have right of way on the roundabout and interfere with the flow of the M8 diversion or vice versa. You can jump onto the pavement on the north side of the A89. I've been doing it every morning since the diversion was put in place.

    Gembo you do know Tebay is bad? My dad's ignition lock broke there in '75 and my heater control valve broke just south of there 4 years ago. I don't stop there now.

    @weefoldingbike, Man on the scene. (See my earlier post about lovely Brompton in Evans it had flat bars that looked sturdy and good pedals. Titanium maybe and only £1735. Covet it.)

    Tebay has downsides. You get a long story about why their milk is dear. Something about buying it from the farmer up the road. Tebay alas cursed for the McG clan but the G and G clan are fine. Their petrol is also dear. We held out for tod hills which used to be cheap but is now only 2 pence less.

    The chips are up from £1.50 to £2 but they are good. I might cycle to get them one day soon if I ever shift this lurgy. Not as far as Tebay, I am not Dave C but they have bought Cairn Lodge at Uddington and that is easily reachable from npbalernobalernoBalerno no idea why predictive text did that, anyway that is a definite plan. Douglas on the other side of the M74 is also worth a visit. Not to be confused with Douglas Water on the east side, that whole village is for sale for One pound. Actually I think the bridge fell down so the folk are stuck there.

    Flat bars and Ti… got that. I got an S2L-X 8 years ago. It is very nice.

    The indicator chains on the 6 speeds are all crudded up so I'm working them back to health with needle nose pliers.

    Accidentally ordered a black folding pedal and not sure which black Brompton should get it.

    If we're on the M6 we're usually going to London or Dorset. The diesel will do either on one tank easily. The petrol one can't.

    @weefoldingbike, yes that was the downside of getting rid of the diesel, stopping on the M6 for petrol and being ripped off. The diesel could do 400 miles nae t'other a ba

    I'm feeling guilty about not volunteering for this, but I think BOFFOF would be unimpressed. Do you think they have "enough" marshals now?

    "Enough" is a challenging word at the moment. GCC initial requirements were a frankly hilarious 1:10 marshal ratio. We've been allowed to relax that an unspecified amount now that we've got closed roads, but we're still aiming for about 1:20.

    We've secured cheap coffee from somewhere tasty for marshals, if that helps...
