The midges were seriously thick first things, eased off a bit once it brightened up a bit and a wee breeze got up.

The weird thing (for me) was that they didn't seem quite as 'bitey' as in other places/times. They were seriously annoying, but I felt and have far less bites than I was expecting.

Thanks to @IWRATS for pulling this together, and everyone for the company (and lifts).

    Some pictures.

Midgetastic. I would've been flapping around like a mad thing.

Who was riding behind unhurt in the first photo? A relative of CCE?

Nice shots of the swimming pools and our charge on Castle Blair.

None of Charlie’s hill? Post the spike Urchaidh? It was fine of course especially as let us cycle while the rockets were firing (just 12 bore)

    And meet at Gilbert’s Bridge.

My Tiso cheap Rohan copy trews were too loose at the waistband so I have a nice midge belt all around the middle. Piriton is helping for sure.

Nice to see everyone again but who ever invited those midges!

The Eagle Eyed amongst you may spot a slight spike near the beginning of this route. It is known as Charlie’s Hill now

Mr fimm and I camped at the head of Glen Ey on Wednesday. It would have been idyllic - except for the midges. We had to sit in the tent and drink beer.

My heart rate registered a new high on IWRATS's Unnecessary Steepcut.

Now SO ITCHY. 45+ midge bites counted, most of them red and infuriating. The lady in the Aberfeldy chemist even passed comment on my pustular state.

@unhurt you get little piezo-electric devices that can take the itch out of insect bites. & antihistamine

That was a great expedition. Many thanks to all participants.

Carrying a comedy kettle up hills into gunfire and biting flies is what CCE is all about. Or should be.

Piriton worked for me, I think nearly all waistband as attempted dismantling of the lovely tent on day 2 in the billion midge swarm

It was an extra high Kettle but fortunately very light. You also sherpa’d the wood we burnt in it

West Atholl rifle range still having their Mad Minutes then? We went for a walk up there some years ago and the continuous gunfire was....not relaxing.

The vibe got even stranger when we went up to the moors to escape the racket and someone (complete with Biggles scarf and goggles) in a low-flying biplane started following us around.
In reality I suspect they were locating the deer herds for later attention as stalking season was about to begin.

@murun sadly they don't seem to help me. Now on the AfterBite. It might not reduce the itch but I do like the sting & the reek of ammonia!

I've lost half a Soreen, last seen Sunday morning. Please check your bags/panniers as I was quite looking forward to it.

they used to say, if you don't know whether you have mice or rats, leave a biscuit out

next day, if its been nibbled, you have mice

if its gone, all gone, then you have rats

but they did not reckon with the legendary mice of the falls of tarf

for it is they who have spirited away your soreen !

they will be hoarding it for the annual upper tarf mice festival

Presumably these are the bothy mice from the Tarf Hotel. Bothy mice seem to have more in common with a small dog!

'Dekavita C' is Japanese for Pineapple Grenade rum. True fact.

I feel much better than before as a result of the trip. It has in my view materially reduced mortality and morbidity in the group, though only an actuarial experience investigation will allow certainty.

Yeah, I definitely felt better after it. The relaxation effect lasted 20 minutes into my return but nice while it lasted.

    @steveo

20 minutes is good going these days. I regard that as a success.

A friend and I took some of our kids on an East Lothian micro-adventure this weekend. Saturday, coast to North Berwick, fish and chips, on round the coast to camp at St Baldred's Cradle (NT 638 813). Sunday, East Linton (Bostock Bakery!!) to Haddington along the river (bit type II+, basically mud and nettles), down to Longniddry and back home along a very busy coast. The kids' first 100km weekend.

To say we were lucky with the weather would be an understatement. Good tail wind out and a warm still yesterday coming home.

Benefits lasting well into today for me. Will see what nick the kids are in when they get home from school.
