    Nice one, @steveo. There was a concern raised that a mere grid reference was a thin pretext on which to set out into the wilds. Sensing the innate reasonableness of this point I have constructed a suggested out and back ride;

    http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/1858576814

    crossing some of the most beautiful country I have ever come across. The trails are mostly gentle with a few harder sections but nothing technical. There is a genuine obstacle in the crossing of the Allt Garbhlach (NN849953) where a bit of hike-a-bike is required if not actual portage but nothing extreme.

    The bothy at Ruigh Aiteachain is currently closed for renovation but it does have an associated rudimentary but serviceable toilet which is always open, making this an excellent semi-wild camp spot. (Also home to a small wood of gigantic juniper bushes unique in western Europe.)

    Anyone wants to add kilometres need merely add a loop up Glen Eanaich, anyone looking to add metres can simply amble up to the 1000m contour on Mullach Clach a'Bhlair. Anyone a bit tired in the morning can return on quiet tarmac.

    Tempted by the emerging temporal and spatial co-ordinates?

    I cycled passed Ruigh Aiteachain bothy a few months ago. It looked exactly as it does in this pic, although a lot muddier.

    https://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/bothies/eastern-highlands/ruigh-aiteachain/

    The chap working there warned us not to go any further as it was impassable - 30 mins later I was thigh deep wading across the Feshie - it was terrifying. Had to cross it twice.

    impassable is a state of mind.

    @Iain McR

    There's actually a path high up on the right hand bank of the Feshie that cuts out the wading at the cost of a little bit of mountain goating. Porpoisonally I like wading rivers. Shows them proper respect.

    Mate you can start from Nethybridge, Colyumbridge, Feshiebridge or Auchlean depending on your appetite. No rules on a bike ride.

    Yeah i'd already started routing from Aviemore, might be easier for me to avail my self of the Scot-rail service.

    24k all down hill, might run it. Anyone fancy giving me a backy back up?

    @steveo it's not for ages though, and I made it up Glen Avon and I'm basically a lump...

    I just don’t have time to get 100k fit at the moment never mind 100k off road. I barely have time to be 10k running fit just now!

    Sounds good.

    What's the recommended river wading gear - bare feet or a pair of flip-flops?

    24k all down hill

    Actually all downhill or on average all downhill? An important distinction (see also"overall it's flat"). I am always suspicious...

    I'd say its as near as dammit all downhill as you're likely to see. Short of coming off the leicht/nevis.

    I should make clear that there are two unbridged river crossings on the way from Nethybridge. The Allt Coire Follais at NN888057 is often knee-deep.

    @steveo

    If 24km isn't enough you can keep going on the road to Glen Tromie and cross over via Corarnstilmore.

    If 24km isn't enough

    That looks like a plan. Adds about 20k a probably a little bit of hike a bike round the back of glen feshie but probably not much to worry about. plus it means its not a dull linear route. Although its now uphill both ways!

    IIRC, the bridge at NN850964 is usable. It looks solid on google satellite view...

    I was looking at the route in from Braemar to the Bothy, as a possible route in to join you, or a possible route out followed by a cycle home.

    @steveo ooh. Down down!

    @Iwrats I never remember to look up inland wild swimming sites. That looks amazing!

    Also have just realised a wine bladder has a third use: improvised flotation device.

    Just realised I'd done the route from the bothy to the train station, its actually uphill all the way to the bothy!! At least its a nice cruise home...

    Of course, with the proviso that everyone is entirely responsible for their own safety, but if you're coming up the Geldie I guess that's pretty much a declaration of independent mountaincraft.

    Yeah, fine this summer @fimm. There's timber lying ready to rebuild the upper one too, but Povlsen's trying to get the CNP to approve planning permission for some other thing as a quid pro quo.

    (Similar personal responsibility waivers apply to all swimming type activities.)
