    In a similar vein

Some great direct questions from @Edinreporter but sadly fairly evasive answering by Cllr Macinnes, which doesn't fill me with hope.

If you are on Twitter, get involved with the #PicardyPlace hashtag tonight as it is all being recorded by the Broughton Spurtle.

I can confirm that the Paolozzi hand is now in place on Hillside Crescent. Highlight of my walk home this evening!

Ha, noticed a big hole in the ground where the hand used to be on my way home last night! Still, I am glad they are not just going to wherever Edinburgh "loses" all of its other statues.

Well the foot and the wee thingmyboaber had both gone when I passed last night. Someone has guerilla knitted a lament for their loss.

    Not guilty your honour.

Don't worry, I did specifically rule you out as the culprit when I saw it!

Guerilla knitting and the lamentation of loss are both close to my heart. Just wondering if I could incite a gigantic anti-gyratory scarf.

    Wot no roundabout??

It is anticipated that an eclectic mix of ‘workspace’ units complimented with the proposed public realm, to include an urban square and public green space and café building fronting Victoria Dock at Waterfront Plaza will draw more visitors to the area and keep them there for longer, in line with local ambitions to increase the retention of visitors in Leith.

The Leith stones will be temporarily homed at Hillside Crescent gardens, while the Sherlock Holmes statue, a tribute to Arthur Conan Doyle who born at Picardy Place in 1869, will be looked after by firm, Black Isle Bronze before finding a new home at Picardy Place.

THE final true cost of the tram project will be over £1 billion, the inquiry into the troubled project has been told.

More if it goes further down Leith Walk!

    @xhdot, "Wot no roundabout??"

No, but to get to the new V&A Dundee / waterfront from the train station or the city centre you have to cross a dual carriageway (60mph limit?) on staggered crossings. I can testify to the traffic fumes being bad at peak travel time,

Oh I can confirm the Paolozzi foot is now in Hillside Crescent Gardens. I paid a visit this evening on the way home. Looks great!

I've finally done the consultation. Just a reminder to anyone else that hasn't done it yet...

does anyone know if the responses will be available to the public to read? Not that I am worried about saying anything, but I am interested in e.g. number + content of responses.

Glasgow Megasnake. That's one of my questions too. I'll be asking councillors. After the Quiet Route consultations they published full reports and the papers that go to Council meetings (in this case Transport, Infrastructure and Environment Committee) usually contain the full responses too. Hopefully this time there will be a huge number of responses so may be too many to print. If you send the pdf of your response to picardygroup@gmail.com they might be able to publish them - we'd probably need to blank out personal info though.

Re the Paolozzis, the Paolozzi Trustees are against the proposed locations in Picardy Place and have a local person actively engaged in pushing for a more suitable space.

I found an easy way to respond was by commenting on how they were failing on each of the benefits/improvements listed.
Main thing is that with a gyratory - ie 3 roads around a large central island - it's never going to be easy to cross or to make it a people friendly place.

Struggling to answer these questions without swearing.

EDIT: They're using an old design for the image on the page about the island site, showing cycle lanes all round the perimeter.

It's very hard to respond in a measured way to the plans because the language used in terms of aims, objectives, whatever is just so disingenuous when put alongside the plans. It's Trumpian in it's level of association with reality in some ways. i.e. so ridiculous you can't really even comment constructively on it.

(caption: "high quality public realm" - arrow pointing at narrow pavement with traffic on w sides. Or the idea of "restaurants, bars and cafés with public space" on the middle bit surrounded by roads. It's just...)

Now onto objecting to the Leith Street TRO (I've already objected to the RSO).

I've drafted a Spokes response to the Leith Street TRO/RSO, just needs tidying up a bit and then will share it shortly. Objecting to both.

Draft Spokes Response to Leith Street proposals - I'll post on the RSO thread too. Hope it helps.

The Council also needs to introduce measures to reduce north-south traffic across the city centre of Edinburgh. This requires an integrated traffic strategy for the area, but one measure which could be introduced relatively simply would be to extend the existing residents’ parking scheme northwards so as to cover the Leith area. This would be likely to encourage a shift from cars to public transport (and also cycling and walking) for those travelling to work in the Leith area, and would have the incidental effect of raising funds for investment in transport infrastructure. If experience elsewhere in Edinburgh is anything to go by, such an extension would also be welcomed by the majority of local residents in the area who would no longer find local streets used increasingly as free commuter car parks. Such an extension would not be the complete answer, but it could certainly be part of the solution.

As I caught a bus after the human bollard thing through a busy Princes Street, I thought wouldn't it be great if a tram handled all passengers to/through Princes Street via the main arteries. Buses from the peripheries and not going through. I suppose someone has thought of that...

chdot There's already talk afoot about extending RPZ to Pilrig Street as many residents are fed up with commuter car parking and visitor parking (guilty!) in the area. Unfortunately I have also heard that a lot of residents don't want to have to pay for parking!
Could be a test case for how far to extend it. Council does have an overall objective to reduce on-street parking in the centre but not sure whether Leith included.

Rosie. Tram shuttle on Princes Street has been suggested a few times. Not sure how practical as it would need to be more frequent than on the rest of the route, so there would need to be "overtaking" space!
Bus Routes that run from one end of town right across to the other without the need to change busses are very popular, but running double-deckers on these routes at all times of the day can't be efficient and the delays in the City Centre must make timetables very unstable.
Smooth, convenient, sheltered, efficient interchanges with frequent enough services would be the way.
I'm sure that Transport for Edinburgh will be able to work it out!

Interesting Transport for London press release on how they are developing proposals to remove the Old Street roundabout. Key quote:

"As part of the wider transformation, the outdated and intimidating roundabout will be removed to create a safer, more pleasant layout, including segregated cycle lanes and traffic signals, and the reintroduction of two-way traffic in line with the Mayor's Healthy Streets Approach. The north-western "arm" of the roundabout will be permanently closed, creating an attractive new pedestrianised public space while new surface-level pedestrian crossings will be introduced."

Important detail to note: "An open call for design ideas has been launched by Islington Council to create an exciting "iconic gateway" for Old Street,"

How very different from the approach to Picardy Place...
